VILLIAM EDWVARD KELLY, OF ROOKVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
GYMNASTIC CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 284,024, dated August 28, 188
Application filed December lli, 185 2. (Modem To coZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM EDWARD KEL- LY, of Rockville, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Gymnastic Chair, of which the following is a full, 'elear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved chair for gymnastic eXercises, and which can also be used as an easychair for aged or weak persons.
The invention consists in a gymnastic chair which is formed of a chair provided with two side supports for the arms, which side supports can swing in any direction, these side adjustable r'ods provided at the upper ends with crutches, and having their lower ends contained in tubes pivoted to the edges of the chair, which tubes are provided at the lower ends with toothed slots through which transverse arms on the lower arms of the rods pass, whereby the rods can be held in the desired position within the pivoted tubes.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved gymnastic chair. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail sectional plan view of one of the tubes directly above the seat. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional elevation of the lower part of the rod fitting in the rocking tube. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal elevation of the lower part of the rocking tube, parts being shown in section.
In each side of the chair-seat A a block, 13, is pivoted within a recess in the side edge in such a manner that the block can swing in the transversedirection of the chair-seat,the outer edge of the said block being flush with the edge of the chair-seat. XVithin the said block a tube, 0, is pivoted, which swings in the said block in the direction of. the longitudinal axis of the chair-seat; but as the block B swings in the transverse direction, and the tube Oispivoted in the said block 13, it is evident that the said tube 0 canbe swung transversely andlongitudinally, or, in other words, in either direction, as it is hung by means of a universal joint. In its lower part the tube 0 is provided at opposite sides with slots D, having upwardly-projecting teeth a in .the opposite edges. A rod, F, fits within the tube 0, and is provided at its upper end with a clutch, Gr, and at its lower end with two transverse arms, H, having beveled edges, so that they fit against the toothed edges of the teeth a. ()ne of the said arms II projects through each slot D. Byturning the rod F the beveled edges of the arms II will be pressed against the beveled edges of the teeth a, as shown in Fig. 4, and the lower edges of the arms H will rest on the upper edges of the teeth, and will hold the rod F in position. The rod F can thusbe adjusted higher or lower very easily by simply turning it in one direction and then in the other, according to the height which is most convenient for the person who is occupying the chair. A tube 0 and rod F are provided on each side of the chair-seat. A person occupying the chair passes the crutches G under his arms, after having adjusted the crutches to the desired height, and then rocks the chair and performs gymnastic exercises of various kinds.
The above-described chair will be found to be very convenient on board a ship, as it al ways gives a good support for the arms at whatever inclination the chair may stand on account of the rolling of the ship. It is also a good support for aged or weak persons.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A gymnastic rockingchair provided on each side with a rodhavi-ng a crutch at the up per end, and jointed to turn toward the front,
back, and sides of the chair, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a chair-bottom having two opposite recesses in its sides, of the top-open and bottom-closed tubes 0 O and the blocks 13, said tubes and blocks being pivoted at right angles to each other, the blocks in the recesses of chair, and the tubes in the blocks, as shown and described,
3. The rod F, having opposite arms H H at the bottom, in combination with a tube, 0, having the opposite slots D D, and the teeth a on the edges of said slots, as and for the purpose specified.
4. The combination, with the chair'A, of
the tubes 0, pivoted to swing in all directions, the rods F, contained within the tubes 0, and
the crutches G at the-upper ends of the rods F, substantially as herein shown and described, 5 and for the purpose set forth.
5. The combination, with the chair A, of the tubes 0, pivoted to swing in all directions, and having toothed slots D in the lower' ends, the rods F, provided with transverse arms H IO at the lower ends, and the crutches G 011 the upper ends of the rods F, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the pur-' pose set forth.
/ 6. The combination, with the chair A, of the blocks B, pivoted in the edges of the same, 15 the tubes 0, pivoted in the blocks B, and the adjustable rods F, contained in the tubes 0, and provided at the upper ends with crutches G, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
-WILLIAM EDWARD KELLY.
