JO'SEPII R. JOHN, OF MOUNT CLEMENS, MICHIGAN.
COMBINED FOOT-REST AND CHILDS SEAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 628,331, dated July 4, 1899.
Application filed September 19,1898. Serial No. 691,357. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH R. JOHN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Clemens, in the county of Macomb and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Foot- Rest and Ohilds Seat, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to that class of adjustable chairs especially designed for use as barbers or dental chairs and provided with a foot stool or rest secured to the adjustable chair-body.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction of this foot stool or rest, whereby it may be readily converted into a childs chair, as more fully hereinafter described'and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through my device as applied to a barbers chair and arranged for a foot-stool, a portion only of the chair being shown and in elevation. Fig. 2 is a diagram elevation of the device with my improvement arranged as a childs chair.
A is the chair-standardflo which is pivotally secured the chair-body B, provided with the depending brackets O for supporting the platform or lower foot-rest D and the upwardly-extending arms or brackets E for supporting the upper foot rest or stool, the parts being of usual and well-known construction.
Between the brackets E is pivotally secured my combined foot-stool and chair F,
which preferably consists of the seat portion a, the arms or sides Z7, and the back 0, thelatter extending to form the rounding portion at on the .reverse side of the seat. This seat.
may be upholstered or finished 01f in any suitable way and is preferably secured to the brackets E by the ears 6.
When in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, the rounded bottom at is turned up and forms a foot-stool similar to those ordinarily placed on chairs of this kind. When it is desired to use the childs chair, it is reversed or brought into the position shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1, in which position it is secured in any suitable way, such as by'means of a brace-rod G, hooking at one end into an eye on the seat and secured at its opposite end in the chair-body.
To raise the seat F to the proper height,
the body of the chair is thrown back, as shown in Fig. 2. This not only elevates the seat'F, but also lowers the back of the chair-body, so that by swinging the main chair around on its standard the chair F may be made to face 7 the usual mirror placed in front of barbers chairs without having the main chair-body intervening. What I claim as my invention is The combination with the chair having a lower foot-rest and standards projecting upward therefrom of a combined foot-stool and childs chair pivotally secured between said standards and comprising the seat portion a the back I) and the rounded portion on the opposite side of the seat, and means for looking the chairin its upright position.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH R. JOHN.
Witnesses:
JAMES B. RISK, VARNUM J. BOWERS.
