Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM TORST, OF BINGHAM- OAl ION, UTAH TERRITORY.
FIRE-ESCAPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 283,439, dated August 21, 1883. Application filed March 24,1883. (No model.)
out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a front perspective View of a building, showing my improved fire-escape in position for operation. Fig. 2 is avertical sectional view, showing-the method of attachment; and Fig.
' 3 is a perspective detailview. Fig. lis a sectional view through line a: at, Fig. 3. r
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
A in the drawings refers to a box, of suitable size to receive the rope, which constitutes my improved fire-escape. Under the wooden bottom B of the said box is secured an additional bottom, 0, of sheet metal. The bottom 13 has an opening, D, to receive the fastening E,which consists of a loop or bail, F, the ends of which have plates G,provided with openings H, to receive the fastening-screws.
This fastening device is fitted nicely in the opening D, and secured by screws 1, which pass through the sheet-metal bottom 0. In this manner the fastener may be attached securely to the floor of a room in the desired position in front of a window without the screws being weakened by the thickness of the bottom B. At the same time the box is securely attached in its proper position.
J is a stout rope, which is securely connected to the loop F by means of a ring, K. Single knots L are formed upon the rope, throughout its length suitable distances apart.
' A portion of these knots, at the upper end of the rope, also serve for the attachment thereto of a series of loops or rings, M, formed of rope, and which serve to assist persons in descending the rope. The said loops also serve to increase the size of the knots to which they are attached, thereby making the said knots The lower end of the rope more effective.
has a ring attached thereto, as at 0, through which the said rope is doubled, so as to form a loop, which may be adjusted around the L vention are obvious. It is simple, inexpensive, and will be found to be more efiective and readily available than other and more complicated devices.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. In a fire-escape, the combination of a box or receptacle having its bottom provided with an opening, a sheetmetal plate secured under the bottom, a fastening device fitted in the opening in the bottom and secured by screws extending through the sheet-metal bottom into the floor, and a rope attached to said fastening device and adapted to be coiled in the said box, as set forth.
2. The combination, with the described box having an opening in its bottom and a sheetmetal plate secured under said bottom, of the herein-described fastening device, consisting of a loop or bail provided at its ends with plates fitted in the opening in the bottom of the box, and adapted to receive the fastening-screws, and the escape-rope secured to the loop or bail of the fastener, as set fortln 3. In a fire-escape, the combination of a box or receptacle, a fastener consisting, mainly, of a loop or bail provided at its ends with perforated plates, the same being arranged in The operation and advantages of this i11-' the bottom of the box and secured by screws passing through the bottom of the box into the fi0or,to which the box is thus also sccured, and an escape-rope attached to the said fastener and provided with knots and loops secured to said knots, as set forth.
*In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
