Be it known that I, MICHAEL Wilson,

a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough f Brooklyn, county of" 'therethrough.

To provide such a device that will b ornamental and not at all objectionable in appearance and one which may be detached or even removed without difiiculty.

The device here presented although of simple construction meets the requirements and the construction and operation will be fully set forth as the specification progresses.

The fOllOWing is what I consider the best means of carrying out this invention and the accompanying drawings should be referred to for a complete understanding of the specification which follows In the drawing.

Figure 1 shows in elevation partly in section a complete device.

Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device shown in Fig. 1.

Similar reference numerals indicate like parts in all the figures where they appear.

At 1, I have indicated the upper sash of a window and at 2, the lower sash is shown, it will be understood that the winow sashes are of ordinary construction and .of any general shape or size and that either or both of the sashes may be moved upward or downward.

In the consideration of this specification and of the drawings which accompanies it we will understand that the lower sash is movable, and that it is to be raised for the purpose of ventilation.

Secured in the lower sash are a plurality of eye bolts as shown as 3, 1, 5, 6, 7, and 8 and these eye bolts are arranged three at each side of the sash.

I provide a plurality of bars 9 and 10 each having a hook 11 at their lower end and screw threaded at their upper end to receive a ball as shown at 12 and 13.

The guard proper consists of a frame having a bottom member 14 which is a perforated bar. At the upper portion of the frame is a bar 15 the ends of which'are downturned to produce the uprights 16 and 17. The upper bar 15 is also perforated and between the bars 14 and 15 I arrange a plurality of fillers 18 and I may use any suitable or desired number of fillers.

The fillers 18 are firmly secured in the bars 14 and 15 either by riveting or by socketing the bars allowing the fillers to pass only part way therethrough and then arranging the nut 19 upon certain of the fillers or side uprights.

It will be noted that when the frame is constructed as shown and described it is hooked upon the ends of the rods 9 and 10 and the rods are passed through the eye bolts 3 and 4 and 6 and 7 and elevated until the books 11 engage in the eye bolts 5 and 8 and thereafter the balls 12 and 13 are screw threaded upon the ends of the rods 9 and 10 and the device is in position for operation.

I call particular attention to the fact that the frame operates in the sill of the window, and in the space usually termed the window box, therefore when the window is lowered the guard is almost entirely concealed.

Modifications may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the principle or sacrificing the advantages of this invention.

Having carefully and fully described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a window sash of a guard comprising a guard frame having a plurality of bars spaced apart and fillers between said bars, a plurality of rods parallel with and secured to the lower sash, a hook upon each of said rods, means upon one of said bars engaging said books, a ball nut upon each of said rods and a plurality of metallic members upon said sash through which said rods are adapted to pass said ball nuts engaging the uppermost of said metallic members to retain said rods and said guard in operative relation.

A guard for windows comprising a plurality of rods arranged one at each side of a window sash, eye bolts secured in said sash through which said rods are adapted to pass, hooks upon said rods and out of the plane thereof and a guard frame detachably engaged in said hooks to be operated by the movement of said window sash.
