CHIMNEY-SWEEPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 282,775, dated. August 7, 1883.
-Application filed February 28,1883. (No model) To all whom it may concern.-
i J em, in the county of Clarke and State of 1 ney, showing the brush in it.
Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Chimney-Sweeper, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The objectof the invention is to improve the construction of chimney-sweepers, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a sectional elevation of a chimney, provided with my improved sweeper. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the top of the chim- Fig. 3 is a section of the brush, and Fig. 4. is a perspective view of a portion of one of the brush-splints.
At any suitable point in the chimney a, above the bottom and below where the smoke enters it from the snioke-pipe or other passage, I
-propose to locate a chain-wheel, b, on any suitable bearing or support, 0, and on the top of the chimney I locate another wheel, 6, and fit a chain, f, on them, the ends of which are connected to a brush, to be worked up and down in the chimney by the chain, which is proper level.
to be worked by turning one of the chainwheels with a crank applied to its shaft, (preferably the lower One,) the shaft of which will project through the chimney and be squared, as at h, for the application of the crank. The brush will have an opening through it for the part of the chain that is not connected to it, and will preferably be provided with a thimble, 1', for a guide to the chain. The ends of the chain will preferably be attached to the brush by branches j, for staying it in its The upper chain-pulley, e,will be suspended by an adjusting-screw, 70, for taking up the slack, and the screw will be supported a suitable distance above the top of the chimney by bars Z, to prevent choking the draft by it. Two bars, Z, suitably bent and crossing each other and being connected together, will be employed for the support of the upper pulley, said bars being properly attached to the top of the chimney. I propose to place a soot-drawer, m, in the bottom of the chimney, and provide an opening thereat for sliding it in and out for the removal of the soot.
To construct the brush in a simple manner I employ a middle plate, a, and two outer plates, 0, for the brush head or block, to be fastened together with bolts 1), and clamp the splints q between them, the splints being laid between the plates and secured in grooves 10, preferably formed for them in the middle plate, or in the others, if desired, the splints being bent up or down at u into the grooves,
thus firmly securing them without the expense of riveting each one, and avoiding the danger of the breaking of the splints where they would be weakened by the hole made for the rivet; besides, it affords a simple means of taking out broken splints and replacing new ones; The splints may be temporarily secured in the grooves a by plaster until the plates at 0 are clamped together. The bolts p,
by which the plates of the brushhead are connected together, may have eyes or rings t for the connection of the brush to the chain.
This attachment is designed for use in chimneys where wood or soft coal is burned, and
which require frequent cleaning out.
It will be seen that the chimney is only obstructed by the chain itself, as the brush will -be-shifted down below the smoke-inlet to the chimney when it is not in use, and the slight obstruction of the chain will be much less than the soot would obstruct if the brush were not employed. The splints are preferably made of thin fiat steel, but may be round, if desired, and brass or tough iron may be used.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1 as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The'iinproved chimney-brush, consisting of clamping-plates n 0, and splints q clamped between said plates and having the; ends bent in the grooves .10, substantially as described.
