METHOD 0F RINGING- BELLS.
To all 'whom 'it may concer/n:
Be it known that I, Trios. V. STRAN, of the city of New Albany, in the county of Floyd and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combinations and Arrangements of Hachinery for the Purpose of Ringing Bells; and I do hereby declare that the following'is a clear and comprehensive description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure I. is a front elevation view of the machine, showing the general arrangement, of the simple and compound levers, and their combination and attachment to the I axle to which the bell-clapper hangs; and
also showing a section of the bell. Fig. II. is a longitudinal section, giving a side view of the bell-clapper and the upright shaft in which it hangs. Y
To enable others to construct my machine, I shall proceed more fully to describe it.
The pedestal A. and upright shaft, B, and lever, C, C, and lever D, D, and compound levers E, E, and bell-clapper F, may all be maderof cast and wrought iron or other metal. The pedestal A, may be made 0f any suitable length and breadth, and fastened to a suitable beam by means of bolts and screws to sustain the upright shaft and combined fixtures for ringing the bell. The shaft B, is made of any length that may be desired, to suit the position or situation of the bell.

The arm H Should be of suitable length to hold the levers away from the upright shaft, B and prevent them from interfering with the bell clapper F, and also the projection of the axle I, at the top of the upright shaft, as seen in Fig. II, of the drawings, must correspond with the arm H, in being of a similar length. The axle, to which the bell-clapper F, is attached is made fast in boxes, v1, z', in which its journals revolve when the machine is put in motion. The machine not being complex in its arrangement, or complicated in its combination, a further description of the same is held unnecessary.
The utility of this arrangement for ringing bells is apparent from many considerations, a few of which may be mentioned. It enables one man to ring the largest of bells, with more ease and precision than any number could on the old plan. It prevents the jarring and injury of buildings and the falling and breaking of bells, &c.
I am aware that bells have been rung in various ways before my invention; and that the devices which I use have been separately employed for various purposes. But
That I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'Ihe combination and arrangement of the levers, C, C, and D, D, and the compound levers, E, E, so connected and attached to the axle I, as to give motion to the bell clapper, in the manner and for the purposes herein shown and set forth.
