CHIMNEY-TOP.

To all whom it may concern.-

Beitknown thatLFREDERIC WUNDERLICH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lebanon, in the county of Lebanon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Chimney-Top, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improved chimney-top adapted to cover the upper end of a chimney to prevent the upper courses of bricks from becoming displaced by the action of the elements and to exclude rain and snow from the flue or flues; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a chimney-top embodying myimprovements, showing the same disposed on the upper end of a chimney. Fig. 2 is partly an end elevation and partly a vertical transverse sectional-view of thesame.

In the embodiment of my invention I provide a cap 1, which is a single casting of iron, steel, or other suitable metal and which is flat on its under side and of such size as to enable it to cover the upperend of a chimney; The said cap is formed with an opening 2, which registers with the chimney flue or flues, and the cap is provided with an upstanding vertical flange 3 around the said opening. The said cap is formed on its lower side with a depending flange 4 of suitable depth, which flange forms a band that passes around the sides of the chimney at the upper portion thereof and effectually protects the upper courses of the bricks from the weather and secures the said courses against displacement,

and thereby prevents the top of the chimney,

from disintegrating. The cap 1 is further formed with a projecting cornice 5, which extends around and forms its four sides and projects outwardly beyond the flange or band 4. In the top or upper surface of the cap 1 is formed a gutter 5, the sides of which are inclined and converge downwardly, as at 6 7. The inclined sides 6 of the gutter form a drip. The said gutter extends entirely around the four sides of the cap on the outer side of the upstanding flange 3, and the cornice 5, at the central portions of the narrow sides thereof, is provided with V-shaped openings 8, which form spouts through which the water is discharged from the gutter.

One side of the upstanding flange 3 is provided with transverse openings 9, which are indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The opposite side of the said'upstanding flange is provided with an upwardly-projecting lug 10, which in practice is preferably located midway between the end portions of said flange. I also provide a hood 11, which may be detachably secured on the cap and which is of substantially semicylindrical form and is here shown as forming a pointed arch. This hood is also a casting of iron or other suitable metal and is formed at its ends with outwardly-projecting flanges or beads 11*. Near the lower edge of the hood, on one side thereof, are inwardly-projecting studs 12, which areformed integrally with the hood and are -adapted to enter the openings 9 in the flange 3 to secure one side of the hood to one side of said flange. A bolt 13, which is engaged with alined openings in the opposite side of the hood and in the lug 8, secures the said side of the hood to the flange 1. It will be understood that by first removing the bolt 13 the hood'may be readily detached from the upstanding flange of the cap. The function of the hood, as-will be understood, is to prevent rain and, snow from falling directly downwardly into the flueor flues of the chimney. Furthermore, the hood by the protection it aifords the flue or flu'es materially adds to the durability of the chimney.

Having thus described my invention, I claim A chimney-cap, flat on its under side, to fit on the top of a chimney and cover the upper end thereof, said cap having a depending flange near its outer edges, forming a protecting-band to extend around the sides of the chimney, a cornice overhanging said flange or band, an opening to register with the chimney-flue, an upstanding flange forming the sides of the opening and having openings 9 in one side thereof and a lug l0 projecting upwardly from the opposite side thereof, in
