SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 750,214, dated January 19, 1904.

Be it known that I, THOMAS MURPHY, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Detroit,
in the county of Wayne and State of Michi.
gan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furnaces, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates generally to furnaces; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of a journal for the usual. rotary clinker-bar whereby it will be prevented from being burned out, thus obviating a difficulty that has heretofore existed in furnace con: struction, and at the same time permit of the ready removal of the bar.
In the construction, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, the grate-bearer is adapted to form the journals for the rotary clinker bar or bars, and to protect the journals from the heat they are arranged mainly on the under side of the bars. I also provide means in the form of overhanging lugs for preventing the displacement of the bar from its bearing, and these lugs are in turn prevented from being burned out by the mass of metal to which they are attached.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a grate-bearer, illustrating my invention as applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional perspective View of the bearer and journal. Fig. 3 is a cross-section through the grate-bearer, and Fig. 4 is a similar section showing a modified construction.
In the drawings thus briefly described, A and B designate two separated parallel bars having formed, preferably, integral therewith a number of cross-bars (J, the bars together forming the usual grate-bearer. As before stated, the bearer is so constructed as to constitute the journals for the usual rotary clinkerbar D, the upper face of each cross-bar being concaved, as at a, to receive the clinker-bar, as plainly shown in Fig. 2. To prevent the displacement of the clinker-bar, an overhanging lug E is formed on the side of each cross-bar adjacent to the upward moving side of the clinker-bar, the lug being integral with the cross-bar. This lug will be sufficient to prevent Serial No- 62,059. (No model.)
the lifting of the clinker-bar from its bearing when the teeth become engaged with the clinkers. To moresecurely hold the clinkerbar from displacement, however, I preferably arrange on the opposite side thereof a detachable slightly-overhanging lug F. The latter may be secured in position in any suitable manner; but I preferably connect the same to bar it will not be easily burned out and is easily replaced, if necessary. It is also to be observed that the integral lug E, which is the stronger of the two, is so arranged as to receive the greater strains exerted by the clinkerbarviz. upon the upward moving side of said bar.
While I have shown and described the pref erable construction of the journal, I do not desire to be limited to the same, as it is obvious that the formation of the journal could be varied without in any manner departing from the spirit of my invention, which consists, essentially, in the peculiar arrangement and construction of the journal whereby it is protected from the heat of the furnace and Ivgvill permit of the ready removal of the clinker- What I claim as my invention is y 1. In combination with a clinker-bar, of supporting means therefor including a crossbar underlying said clinker-bar and provided at its respective sides with upwardly-extending end portions spaced apart by the upper portion of the clinker-bar embracing opposite sides of said clinker-bar and extending but partially around the upper portion thereof sufficiently only to retain the same in place. In combination with a clinker-bar, of supporting means therefor including a crossbar underlying said clinker-bar and provided for one of said upwardly-extending portions at its respective sides with upwardly-extending end portions spaced apart by the upper portion of the clinker-bar embracing opposite sides of said clinker-bar and extending but partially around the upper portion thereof sufficiently only to retain the same in place, in combination with detachable securing devices whereby the same may be removed.
