' 3*Claims. (Cl.'21189) This invention relates to an improved garment hanger .tbf jtheiclamp typefor hanging ,trousers, skirts, and the "like.
The primary objectlof the invention is to provide. a :more, practical and: elfi'cient hanger of this kind for .moummg on a wall or. other vertical support, which has vertically swingable clamping bar components which are 'pivotdjo'n v'erticallyspaced horizontal axes so that when [these components are depressed to'their garment clamp- Q ing; positions, the clamping bars are compressed toward feach Otherf for securely clamping a garment therebetween, the hanger being simple in construction and composed of a small number of easily made and easily assembled parts.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hanger of the character indicated, which'can be made in attra'ctive, rug'ged,.and serviceable forms at relatively low 1 cost, is .easilyinstalled and used, and is highlyasatisfactttony,practicalandacceptable for the purpose intended.
F'These. .tog'ether with. other. objects and advantages whicl'i .will become. apparent reside in the details of constructionhand operation. as more fully hereinafterdescribed and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numer'als refer'to-like-partsthroughout the several views,
and in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a garment hanger of the invention, mounted on a vertical support;
Figure 2 is a front elevational view, looking substantially from line 2--2 of Figure 1, a garment suspended by the hanger being shown in phantom lines;
Figure 3 is an end elevational view looking toward the right from line 33 of Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken substantially on line 4 4 of Figure 2, showing in phantom lines the clamping components elevated and separated preparatory to receiving and clamping therebetween a garment shown in phantom lines.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the illustrated hanger 14 comprises a bracket 12 comprising a plate 26 secured, as by screws 22, to a vertical support, such as a wall 10. Struck out of the plate are vertically spaced a'pertured ears 24 and 25. Engaged pivotally in the ears are vertically aligned and oppositely directed lugs 34 and 36 on the rearward or rear ends of parallel spaced horizontal upper and lower lugs 30 and 32 of a U-shaped arm 26, which includes a bight portion 28 connecting the outer ends of the legs and urging the legs resiliently away from each other. The arm 26 can be readily removed from the mounting bracket 12 by compressing the legs 30 and 32 toward each other, so as to disengage the lugs 34 and 36 from the ears 24 and 25.
Mounted on the arm 26 is a clamping assembly 16 comprising opposed outer and inner clamping bars 33 and 40, respectively. The outer clamping bar 38 is on upper levers 42, which may be constructed from wire, and which comprise horizontal portions 43 having on their inward ends coils 44- circumposed about interme ice diatepor'tion's: of the-"upper-leg 30 'of the arm 26' and retained in'substantially fixed-positions by means of suitably secured washers 46, see Figure l, disposed at the outer sides of the coils44. The portions 43 terminate'at their outer ends in depending portions 48 secured on' the upper edge 56' of the outer clamping bar 38. The bar 38 hason 'the inner 'face thereof a suitably secured'pad 52 of friction material, such as sponge rubber or the like, which is frictionally' engageable with a side of a garment G, such as a' pair of trousers, a skirt, or the like. The coilsr44 are connected by arod 45 extending therebetween.
The horizontally elongated inner clamping bar 40 is on a pair of levers 54- which are shorter than the levers 42, and comprise horizontal portion 55 having on their rear ends coils 56- cireumposed about intermediate portionstof the lower leg 32- oflthe arm- 26, and retained in The clamping bar 40 has secured on its outer side a pad 66 of friction material similar. to that on the clamping bar38 for engagement with a side of a garment G. The eyest64 constitute 'losti'motion'connections between the levers54'and"42, so that when;the clamping bar 33 is pivoted upwardly onthe-upper leg 3d; of the arm 26 to the position shown in Figure 4; the inner clamping bar 40 and the. lever 54 pivot; upwardly onthe lower leg 32 of'the' arm-26, in" the mannerclearly shown in, phantom lines in'Figure 4.
,When-a garmentG is disposedbetween'the clamping pads 525 and '66 of the clamping bars; the frictional engagement of the garment G-with the opposed'clarnping pads 52* and 66 eauses thelevers =42--and- 54 'to pivot downwardly and cause the clamping bars 38 and 49 to approach each other to clamp the garment therebetween. This action is produced by the differences in length of the levers 42 and 54 and their pivotal mounting on the legs 30 and 32 on vertically spaced axes. The coils 56 on the rear ends of the levers 54 are connected by a rod 47 extending therebetween.
It will be noted that the inner clamping bar 4! is substantially wider than the outer clamping bar 38, and the bar 40 extends above the bar 38, so that one side of the upper end portion of a pair of trousers, for example, will be retained against the clamping pad 66 of the inner bar 40 as the clamping pad 52 is rotated into engagement with the opposite side of the trousers.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
