2 Claims. (Cl. 131-173) This invention relates to a smokers accessory and has for its primary object to filter, wash and moisten smoke as it passes from a smoke generator to the mouth of the smoker.

A further object is to filter the smoke prior to its entrance into a water reservoir so that only clean smoke will pass through the water contained in the reservoir.

Other objects and advantages will become apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a smokers accessory embodying the features of this invention;

Figure 2 is an enlarged central longitudinal sectional view;

Figure 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Figure 2; and

Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectional view through the central portion of a fragment of the arm and pipe stem.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral designates an upstanding receptacle adapted to hold a body of water, such receptacle including an open top and a closed bottom 11 and an upstanding wall 13 extending about the perimeter of the bottom 11 and carried by the bottom. Superimposed upon the receptacle 10 is a vertically disposed sleeve 12 which has the lower end extending about the open top of the receptacle and is secured to the receptacle. Closing the upper end of the sleeve 12 and removably mounted on the upper end of the sleeve 12 is a cover 24.

Positioned within the sleeve 12 below the cover 24 is an upstanding bowl 28, the bowl having a brim dependingly carried by the under face of the cover 24. A vertically disposed pipe 30 is positioned within and extends between the receptacle 10 and the sleeve 12 and has the upper end connected in communication with the bowl 28 and the lower end spaced above the bottom 11 of the receptacle 10. A check or flap valve 36 closes the lower end of the pipe 30 for preventing the escape of water from the receptacle 1%) into the pipe 30. On the lower end of the pipe 30 is a conical shaped member 38 which is adapted to surround the check valve 36 and which terminates in the lower cylindrical portion 38', the portion 33 receiving and retaining therein a disc-shaped filter 40. The filter 40 is spaced above the bottom of the receptacle 1i and is below and adjacent the valve 36.

Projecting perpendicularly from the upper face of the cover 24 is an open ended socket 26, one of the open ends of the socket being in communication with the interior of the bowl 2S and the other of the open ends of the socket being adapted to receive a smoke generator therein, such as a cigarette, or an externally screw threaded boss on a smoke generator designated G, as indicated in broken lines in Figure 2. Projecting laterally from the sleeve 12 intermediate the ends thereof is an arm 14, the arm having a passage 16 extending longitudinally therethrough and communicating with the interior of the sleeve 12 or smoke chest 34. The free end of the arm 14 has means for attachment of a pipestem 42. The arm 14 is provided in its end remote from the sleeve 12 with a recess 18 which communicates with the passage 16 and formed at the junction of the recess 18 and passage 16 is a valve seat 20, the purpose of which will hereinafter appear. A plate 50 is carried by the pipe stem 42 and is provided with holes 52 which register with the openings 46 and slidably mounted through said plate 5% is a valve stem 54 which enters an axial recess 48 and carries at its end remote from the pipe stem 42 a check valve 56 which cooperates with the seat 20 in closing the smoke outlet passage. A tubular extension 58 is carried by the plate 50 and extends toward the valve seat 29 to define a guide for a compression coiled spring 69 which bears at one end on the plate 56 and at its opposite end on the check valve 56. The check valve is yieldingly urged into contact with the seat under the effort of the spring 60. it is to be understood that the spring 60 is relatively light so that suction on the bit 44 will cause the check valve 56 to move away from the seat against the effort of the spring 60.

Threadedly entering the internally screw threaded bore 22 is an externally screw threaded hollow plug 61 which has its lower end portion seated in a groove 62 formed in the arm 14. The plug is provided with opposed apertures 65 which as shown in Figure 2, are in communication with the passage 16. The end of the plug 61 remote from the passage 16 carries a hollow globe 64 which serves as a handle. By partially rotating the plug 61 the apertures 65 are shifted out of communication with the passage 16 and thereby, blocking off the washed smoke to the pipestem 42. The plug 61 serves as a means for blocking off the passage of the washed smoke from the smoke chest 34 to the pipestem, at the will of the smoker.

In use, by connecting a suitable smoke generator to the socket 26 and igniting said generator, it being understood, that the receptacle contains a suitable amount of water, when a draft is applied to the bit 4 the smoke will be drawn through the bowl into the pipe 30 and thence past the flap valve 36 into the inverted cup member 38. Passing through the cup member 38, the smoke will enter the water in the receptacle through the porous filter 4%) to be washed and moistened by the water contained in the receptacle and the smoke will thence pass upwardly into the smoke chest 34 around the peripheral edge of the bafile 32. Leaving the smoke chest 34, the smoke will pass through the smoke outlet passage and past the check valve 56 into the tubular pipe stem and bit 44 from whence it enters the mouth of the smoker.

While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

What is claimed is:
