Claims. (Cl. 40-125) This invention relates to improvements in an advertising display device which may be mounted upon the usual grocery carts employed in supermarkets and refers particularly to a foldable display which can accommodate itself to the baskets of different sizes of carts.
One of the important features of the present invention resides in the provision of a foldable display device which may be constructed of cardboard or the like which may foldably embrace the upper marginal edges of a cart basket and which may carry a prominent upstanding panel at one end upon which advertising matter may be carried.
Another important feature of the invention resides in a foldable display device of the character described which may be folded in flat condition for transportation and storage.
A further important feature of the present invention resides in a folding and locking arrangement, so contrived as to accommodate itself to baskets of different dimensions.
Other objects and features of the present invention will be apparent from the accompanying drawings and following detailed description.
In the drawings,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a conventional supermarket cart upon which the display device, embodying the present invention, is mounted.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detailed sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detailed sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detailed sectional view taken on line 44 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a development of that portion of the device which embraces the upper edges of the basket.
Fig. 6 is a development of the rear panel.
Fig. 7 is an exploded view of the edge-embracing portion of the display illustrating particularly the association of the front unit with the side units thereof.
Referring in detail to the drawings, 1 indicates generally a conventional supermarket cart comprising a frame 2, wheels 3, lower basket 4, upper basket 5 and handle 6. The upper basket 5 comprises frame members 7 which define the open top thereof and the walls of the basket are fabricated from cross wires which are woven to form a reticulated structure.
The display device comprising the present invention is adapted to be removably mounted upon the upper defining edges of the basket 5 and comprises side enveloping portions 9 and 10, a front enveloping portion 11 and a rear panel 12.
Referring particularly to Figs. 5, 6 and 7 the components of the display device are shown in blank or developed form. The device comprises two side blanks 9' and 16. corresponding to the side enveloping portions 9 and 10, respectively, central blank 11', corresponding to the front enveloping portion 11, and panel blank 12' corresponding to the rear panel 12.
The side blanks 9' and are similar except that the nited States Patent 0 2,825,163 Patented Mar. 4, 1958 "ice individual blanks are right and left handed. In view of the fact that said blanks are similar, only blank 9' will be described in detail, it being understood that the description also applies to blank 10'. The blank 9' is generally rectangular in shape and is provided substantially centrally with two relatively closely spaced parallel fold lines 13. Adjacent one longitudinal edge a fold line 14 is also provided, said latterfold line being parallel to the lines 13. Adjacent one end of the blank, said blank is notched to define tongue 15. At the opposite end of the blank from the tongue 15, a lug 16 is formed, said lug being provided with a plurality of spaced, parallel transverse fold lines 17. The end of the lug 16 comprises an area 18 upon which an adhesive is carried. Transversely spaced from the lug 16, the body of the blank is provided with a locking slit 19. j j
The central blank 11' comprises a substantially rectangular body portion 20 which is divided by two closely spaced parallel fold lines 21. A curved tab 22 is integrally joined to an end portion of the body 20 and said tab carries a plurality of radial lines of fold 23. The end of the tab 22 terminates in a locking tongue 24. At the opposite end of the body 20, a curved tab 25 having radial fold lines 26, is carried, the tab 25 being similar to tab 22. The tab 25 terminates in a locking tongue 27, similar to tongue 24.
The side blanks 9' and 10' are joined to the central blank 11 by adhesively joining the areas 18 of the tabs 16 to the end portions of the body 20 and the opposite sides of the lines of fold 21 from that portion of the body which carries tabs 22 and 25, as shown best at 18' in Fig. 5. When the blanks are thus joined, the fold lines 13 of the blanks 9 and 10 are brought into alignment with the fold lines 21 of the central blank.
When the blanks have been assembled, as shown best in Fig. 5, the three blanks may be folded about the lines 13 and 21 which will provide an elongated V-folded member. The V-folded member thus formed may then be disposed over the two side walls and front wall of the basket with the frame. member 7 of the basket disposed within the V-angle, that is, adjacent the lines of fold 13 and 21. This position of the parts is best shown in Fig. 2, wherein the outer walls of the blanks 9, 16' and 11' are disposed outside of the outer faces of the side and front walls of the basket and the inner walls of the blank are disposed respectively inserted in locking slits 19 to securely lock the edge-embracing portion of the device upon the basket.
The blank 12, which is adapted to form the rear panel 12, comprises a generally rectangular blank having an upper main display area 28 and a lower portion 29 which, when the panel is disposed in the basket, is positioned in front of the rear wall of the basket. The lower portion 29 carries two lateral wings 30 each of which is provided with spaced parallel fold lines 31. When the rear panel 12 is disposed in the basket, the wings 30 are both folded forwardly about the lines 31 and tend to frictionally grip the inner side walls of the basket. To prevent the rear panel 12 from canting forwardly within the basket, the fingers 15 interlock with the wings 30, as shown best at 32 in Fig. 1.
To add a more finished appearance to the display, the side blanks 9 and 10 may be folded about the fold lines 14 to cant the elongated strip inwardly, as shown best at 33 in Fig. 2.
By the provision of the plurality of fold lines 23 and 26 on tabs 22 and 25, and the fold lines 17 on the tabs 16, the display, particularly that portion thereof which embraces the front and side walls of the basket, can be made to embrace baskets of different widths and lengths since said folded portions may be caused to tightly or loosely embrace the front corners of the basket. Moreover, said baskets normally vary both in length and width, that is, when they are longer they are usually narrower, or if wider they are usually shorter, and by the provision of the corner construction of the display, such variations, within limits, may be accommodated.
The advertising matter (not shown) may be placed upon the outer and inner portions of the side members 9 and and also on the outer and inner portions of the front member 11, as well as both faces of the rear panel 12.
