Description

E E- HAMLIN PICTURE FRAMESECURING BRACKET Jahf 21, 1958 Filed Sept. 29, 1953 INVENTOR ATTORNEYS United States Patent PICTURE FRAME SECURING BRACKET Ela E. Hamlin, Monahans, Tex.
Application September 29, 1953, Serial No. 382,980
1 Claim. (Cl. 40-156) This invention relates to a securing device designed for use in securing oil paintings in their frames, the primary object of the invention being to provide a securing device which may be readily and easily attached to a picture frame and pivoted to a position directly over one edge of an oil painting stretcher frame securely holding the oil painting and stretcher frame within the picture or display frame.
An important object of the invention is to provide a fastener of this character wherein the pressure directed to the oil painting stretcher frame with which the securing device is held, may be regulated adapting the securing device for use in securing heavy or light oil paintings.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a securing device which may be readily and easily secured to a picture frame by the average person, eliminating the necessity of employing the services of a skilled mechanic to position the securing device.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a fragmental sectional view of a stretcher frame as held in a display frame, by the securing device, forming the essence of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the securing device.
Referring to the drawing in detail, a portion of the display frame is indicated by the reference character 5, the frame being of the conventional structure.
The reference character 6 indicates the stretcher frame securing device which is in the form of a clip constructed 2,820,311 Patented Jan. 21, 1958 of a length of spring metal constructed to provide a pair of spaced parallel arms 7 and 8, the arm 7 being shorter than the arm 8. The arm 7 constitutes the securing arm which rests squarely against a flat surface at the rear of the frame 5, the arms 7 and 8 having aligning openings 9 and 10, through which the securing screw 11 is extended, the threaded end of the screw being embedded in the display frame 5.
As shown by Fig. 3 of the drawing, the free end of the arm 8 is curved laterally at 12 so that it may fit over the inner edge of the stretcher frame 13, over which the canvas 14 is stretched.
The reference character 15 indicates the usual picture hanging wire which has its ends secured to the securing screws 11 to permit the picture frame and its painting to be hung by the usual picture supporting hook.
From the foregoing it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described, I have provided a spring clip to be secured to the rear surface of a display picture frame, the screw supporting the clip and securing the clip to such picture frame, being of the spring type so that the pressure of the clip against the stretcher frame supported by the display frame may be regulated according to the weight of the canvas painting and its stretcher frame.
It will further be seen that it will be impossible for the stretcher frame and its picture to become accidently displaced from the display frame.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
A device for securing a picture and its stretcher frame in a picture frame, comprising a spring clip formed of a U-shaped resilient strip including a long leg and a short leg, said legs being spaced apart and having aligned openings therein spaced from the bight of the U-shaped clip, for the reception of a screw adapted to engage in said picture frame, the short leg resting flat on said picture frame, a laterally and inwardly curved end portion on said long leg adapted to engage over said stretcher frame, the spacing of said arms and opening leaving a space between said arms and the bight of said clip through which said screw extends, providing a means for securing an end of a picture supporting wire to said screw.
