ADJUSTABLE FOR PICTURE-TRAMES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patenten Apr; 22,1913.
Application led September 6, 1911. Serial. No. 647,813.
To all whom t may concern.'
VBe it known that I, EDWARn a citizen of the United States residing at Pittsbur legheny and State o Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Clamps for Picture- Frames, of which the following is a specitcation, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to an adjustable clamp for picture frames, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a clamp- H. RINGER, of America,
ling device that can be easily attached to a frame for retaining pictures, mirrors and panels, together with their backings, in the frame, lirrespective of small differences in the thickness of the picture and panel, or backing. 1 u Another object' of thisinvention is to provide a frame with longitudinal shiftable clamps'or ,clips that can be easily sprung into position and as readily released, the use of the clamp obviati'ng the-necessity of injuring the frame by repeatedly driving fastening means into the frame.
A further object of this invention is to provide resilient clips that are inexpensive 1 to manufacture and easy to manipulate forthe purpose for which they are intended.
. I attain the above objects by a mechanical construction thatwill be hereinafter more specifically described and then claimed. s
Reference will now be had to the drawing,
wherein- Figure l isa perspective view of a por-- tion of the frame provided with the clamps `or clips; Fig. 2 is a longitudinalsectional view of a portion of the frame showingone of the clips in a locked position, andFig. v3 is a similar view showingthe clip in an unlocked position. i j
lThe reference numeral l denotesa frame ofthe ordinary and well known type, which is chamfered or grooved, as at 2', to receive a picture, panel or :mirror which has vbeen lillustrated by way of an example as a transparent plate 3, having a backing 4, between which there is interposeda picture 5.
Movably arranged uponA the rear side or the frame l, are a plurality of resilient h, in the county of Al lclips 6 and a sulicient number of these clips are employed to firmly retain the backing 4 within the frame 1 and against the picture 5. Theclips 6 are made of light or durable resilient metal bent upon a compound curve with the outer ends thereof longitudinally slotted, as at 7, to provide clearance for screws 8 or other fastening means employed for retaining the clips in engagement with the frame. The head 9 of the screw engages the upper surface of the clip, and the curvature of the clip adjacent to the head 9 is suiiicient to hold the cli in two positions. When the clip is pushedp inwardly, thereby placing the outer end of the slot in prox# imity to the screw 8, the inner end of the clip is retained in an elevated osition. To
place the clip in enga-gement with the backl ing 4, it is only necessary to push outwardly upon the clip. The curvature of the clip causes the inner end thereof to be lowered into engagement with the backing 4, and the greater effort in pushing the clip outwardly, the greater the pressure brought to bear upon the backing 4 by the clip.
It is obvious that the clip can be easily adjusted and when in an unlocked position it can beA swung in a 4horizontal plane, should it lbe necessary, when placing the picture, panel or backing in position.
What I claim ist The combination with a recessed frame for supporting a picture and badlring, of a plurality of resilient clips, each including an arcuate vintermediate portion and a pair of curved end port-ions, the end portions being reversely curved with respect to the intermediate portion, each of said outer end portions providedwith a longitudinal slot extending fromthe inner terminus of said outer end portion'to a point in proximity 'to the outer terminus of said outer endy portion, said inner end portion being imperforate andengaging the.- backing for maintaining it in the frame, and headed screws extending through the slotted end portions and carried by said frame and capable of bearing upon the upper surfaces of the said slotted end portion for returning said clips in an adjusted position, the curvature of said clips inconnection wlth the heads of said screws providing means for mainteining the In testimony whereof I aix my signature mner end ortlons of the chps 1n an ele- 1n the presenoe of two wltnesses.
vated posit1on out of engagement with the EDWARD H. RINGER. backing when the clips are moved inwardly Witnesses: r and in engagement with the backing when MAX H. SRoLovITz,
moved outwardly. CHRISTINA T. Hoon.
