LYMAN G. WOOD AND JAMES S. TAYLOR, OF WIOHITA, KANSAS.
THILL-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 282,021, dated July 24, 1883.-
' Application filed May 23, 1893. (No model.)
Couplings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the aceompanyin g drawings.
This invention pertains to an improvement in thill-eouplings, having for its object to pre Vent the accidental detachment of the thills, to permit the ready coupling and uncoupling thereof, and to render the same noiseless; and it consists of the combination and construction of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of our improved thill-coupling.
Fig. 2 is a plan view, and Fig. 3 is a detail view.
A is the ordinary axle-clip, from the front side of which proj eet two cheek pieces or arms, a a, one of which has a socket, b, on its inner side, and the other has an eye, a, to which access is obtained from the upper side by means of a slot, d.
B is the thill-iron, which is formed at its inner end, on the sides, with lugs e0ne being headedone of which enters the socket b, and the headed one fits in the slotted eye 0, as Shown.
To permit the ready insertion and removal of the thill-iron it is flattened between the lugs e to a less thickness than the diameter of the 3 5 lugs, whereby it is passed through the slot 11. \Vhen in the position in the cheek-pieces a a, and held at the angle which they have when the draft is applied, the thill-irons are unable to become accidentally detached, while by 0 means of looped springs O, interposed between the rear ends of the thill-irons, they are rendered noiseless. The inner ends of the springs I O are secured upon a threaded bolt, f, formed upon the coupling-piece g of the lower ends of 5 the axle-clip. A thumb-nut, D, enables the removal of the pressure of the spring from the thill-iron when it is desired to detach the same.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 50 The thill-coupling consisting of the axle-clip arms, having one a socket and the other a slotted eye, the looped spring, the bolt and its thumb-nut, and the thill-iron, having at its in ner end, on the sides, lugs, onebeing headed and 5 5 flattened, so as to be of less thickness than the diameters of the lugs, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we afiix oursignatures in presence of two witnesses.
LYMAN O. WVOOD. JAMES S. TAYLOR.
