1 Claim. (Cl. 2-41) This invention relates to the general art of womens 1igvearing apparel and, more particularly, is for a maternity elt.
One object of my present invention is to devise a maternity belt that has effective supporting engagement beneath the abdomen of the wearer and also firm engagement with the sacroiliac region of her body, and that is provided with means of engagement beneath the buttock of the wearer so as to still further assist in maintaining the garment in proper position upon her body and to preclude the necessity of wearing garters and stockings.
Another object is to devise such a garment with an improved means for affording effective engagement with the sacroiliac region of the wearers body when the garment is in its intended position of use.
Other objects will appear from the following description and claim when considered together with the accompanying drawing.
Fig. l is a rear elevation of my present form of garment illustrated in the position which it occupies upon the body of the wearer;
Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 44 of Fig. 2.
Referring now to the accompanying drawing in detail, the front part 1 is of substantially inverted trapezoidal form and is made of elastic fabric with stretch in only the vertical direction and is adapted for supporting engagement beneath the abdomen of the wearers body. Connected to the two side edges of the part 1 are the duplicate side-and- rear parts 2 and 3 which are made of elastic fabric with stretch only horizontally so as to have snug engagement about the hip regions and adjoining abdominal region of the wearers body when in position thereupon. The rear ends of the parts 2 and 3 are each folded back upon themselves into angular overlapping portions 2a and 3a, respectively, and are sewed together so as to form a butt joint between the folded edges of these end portions; and a reinforcing part 4 of elastic comparatively heavy fabric with only lateral stretch is applied across the inside of such joined end portions and is sewed thereto so as to form a reinforcing lamination for effective engagement with the sacroiliac region of the wearers body. The part 4 is of substantially inverted trapezoidal form and is sewed in position along lines 4a at the free edges of the folded portions 2a and 3a and that extend angularly upwardly and outwardly from the lower corners thereof so as to define a substantial trapezoid. If so desired, the side edges of the part 4 may also be sewed to the parts 2 and 3 although this is not necessary.
Longitudinally elastic tape 5 may be sewed to the inside upper edge portions of the parts 2, 3 and 4 and may be extended along the side edge portions of the front part 1. The side-and- rear parts 2 and 3 may be gathered along the elastic tape 5 so as to aflord most effective engagement about the waist of the wearers body. Also, a longitudinally elastic tape 6 may be applied to the inside of the rear edges of the parts 2 and 3 which may be gathered along the same for a snug fit upon the body of the wearer.
Another longitudinally elastic tape 7 may be sewed to the inside of the lower edge portion of the front part 1 and the adjoining angularly disposed lower edge portions of the parts 2 and 3, the last-named edges assuming angles of approximately 45 degrees when the garment is in posi tion upon the body of the wearer. The tape 7 is extended from the lower rear corners of the parts 2 and 3 in the form a longitudinally elastic band 8 that is adapted to be engaged beneath the buttock of the wearers body so as to assist in holding the garment against riding upwardly out of its intended position.
Thus, with this garment, the part 1 will have effective engagement beneath the abdomen of the wearer and will not only provide support therefor during the period of pregnancy but will also assist in preventing the garment from riding upwardly out of proper position. The reinforced portion at the rear of the garment will afford very firm and effective engagement with the sacroiliac region of the wearers body and will prevent the garment from slipping downwardly out of its proper position; and the engagement of the band 8 beneath the wearers buttock will also prevent the garment from riding upwardly. As a result, there is obtained what might be termed a threepoint engagement for maintaining the garment in proper position upon the body of the wearer. At the same time, this garment will have sung engagement about the hip and adjoining abdominal regions of her body so as to give her the greatest possible feeling of comfort and security.
With the present garment it is not necessary to wear garters and stockings in order to hold the garment against riding upwardly out of proper position upon the wearers body but the provision of garters and the Wearing of stockings may be altogether optional. At the same time this garment affords a feeling of dependability upon the part of the wearer. The arrangement of the overlying inverted trapezoidal portion 4 and combined portions 2a--3a of trapezoidal form with their edges inclined inversely towards each other, and the angularly disposed stitching 4a all serve to produce a decided and desired firmness in all directions for supporting engagement in the sacroiliac region of the wearers body while permitting whatever lateral stretch might be required at any time, such stretch being less pronounced than that in the side portions of the parts 2 and 3. Moreover, this garment is of simple construction and hence can be manufactured and sold at a reasonable price.
What I claim is:
A maternity belt comprising a front part adapted to extend transversely and exclusively beneath the abdomen of the wearers body in uplifting engagement therewith and having two ends, combined side-and-rear means connected to the two ends of said front part and adapted to extend about the sides of the wearers hips and to have bearing engagement with the sacroiliac region of the wearers body when in position thereupon and having side lower edges extending downwardly and rearwardly from the bottom edge of said front part and having rear lower edges extending downwardly and forwardly and intersecting said side lower edges thereof in substantially V-like forms, and a longitudinally elastic strip having ends connected to the points of said V-like forms and extending rearwardly and downwardly therefrom and being adapted to engage beneath the buttock of the wearers body and entirely outside of the crotch of her body when the belt is in position upon her body.
