UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.A
CHARLES A. BAILEY, OF MIDDLETOWN, CONNECTICUT.
MECHANICAL TOY.
SPECIFICATION formingl part of Letters Patent No. 281,427, dated July 17, 1883.
Application filed March 3, 1883. (No model.) l
T 0 @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. BAILEY, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Midand exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. I
Figure l of `the drawings is a side view of my toy, and Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the same.
This invention has relation to mechanical toys, and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement upon a wheel mounted frame of a vibratory support carrying a ball or other object, end gures, between which the ball or other object passes back and forth duringthe Vibrations, and a crank device operating the vibratory support when the toy is in motion; and the invention further consists in providing, in combination with the vibratory support and its ball or other object, pivoted or yielding end figures adapted to be put in motion by the impact of the vibratory obj ect, all as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates a frame supported on wheels B. The shaft C, connecting one pair of wheels, is formed with a crank, D.
E represents avibratory support having an upward extension or arm, c, and a downward extension or arm, c', the support being pivoted to the main frame, as indicated at g. The arm e, which extends downward from the pivotal portion ofthe support, is connected by means of a small wire or pitman, l1., to the crank ci,
so that when the toyis moved along the iioor, causing its wheels to t-urn, the vibratory support will be moved back and forth. To the upper end of the arm e of the vibratory support is attached aball, k, or other small object.
At each end the frame A is provided with a support or bearing, I, to which is pivoted the figure of aboy, monkey, or other animated being, as indicated at N, the figure having arms or projections m in position to be engaged by the vibrating ball or object 7c. To the lower end of this ligure is usually connected a bell or jingle, as indicated at m. When the toy is dragged over the fioor, the ball will appear to be thrown from one gure to the other, as its support vibrates back and forth. When the figures are pivoted, as shown in the drawings, the impacts of the ball will put them alternately in motion, and will cause the bell to sound.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. A mechanical toy consisting of a wheelmounted frame supporting end figures, and having between the end figures a vibratory support carrying a ball or other object, and operated by means of a crank on the wheel- 7| shaft and connection, substantially as specified.
2. In a mechanical toy, the combination, with a vibratory support operated by a crank on the wheel-shaft, and carrying a ball or other small object, of pivoted or yielding end figures 7 connected to bearings on the frame, and adapted to be put in motion by the impact of the vibratory obj ect, substantially as speciiied.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' CHAS. A. BAILEY.
