Description

(No Model.) V. NYDER,
TRIGYGLE.
No. 475,622. Patented May 24,1892.
ATTORNEY.
UNrrEo STATES ATENT OFFICE.
WALDO v. SNYDER, or CANTON, o1-11o.
TRICYCLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 475,622, dated May 24, 1892.
Application filed October 26, 1891. $erial'No. 409,936. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WALDo V. SNYDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tricycles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation showing parts of the horse in section. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the body of the horse. Fig. 3 is an end view of the tricycle proper. Fig. 4: is a detached view showing a portion of one of the leg-bars and its bracket and one of the footplates. Fig. 5 is a detached View of one of the leg-bars. Fig. 6 is a detached view of the head-connecting bar or pin. Fig. 7 is a View showing a portion of the body and the shaftbracket attached thereto, also illustrating the shaft and its sprocket-wheel. Fig. 8 is a detached View of the propelling-shaft and its sprocket-wheel.
The present invention has relation to tricycles; and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawlnsrs. I
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the body, which in this instance is that of a horse, and it may be of any desired size, reference being had to the kind and style of tricycle desired to construct. To the body A are attached the brackets a, which brackets are for the purpose of journaling the propelling-shaft B, said propelling-shaft being located substantially as illustrated in Fig. 1.
The propelling-shaft B is provided with the sprocket-wheel O, which sprocket-wheel is for the purpose of communicating rotary motion to the traveling wheels I) by means of the drive-chain D, the sprocket-wheel D, and the shaft D". The shaft D is journaled to the body A by means of the bracketE or its equivalent, and is located substantially as illustrated in Fig. 1.
To the body A are pivotally connected the legs 0 and c by means of the arms cl and the bars (1. For the purpose of communicating motion to the legs 0 and c as the tricycle is propelled the shaft B is provided with the crank F, to which crank the bottom or lower end of the pitman H is journaled and the top or upper end of said pitman pivotally connected to the bell-crank I, and to the arms of the bell-crank I are pivotally connected the rods J, which rods are pivotally connected to the top or upper ends of the arms d. In the drawings the crank to which the pitman H is journaled is shown located upon the forward shaft B; but it will be understood that the bell-crank may be reversed and the crank formed on the rear shaft. The only object of this construction is to give more speed to the movements of the legs 0 and c, which construction can be had without departing from the nature of my invention.
To the front or forward portion of the body A is journaled the guide-bar K,whichis located substantially as illustrated in Fig. 1. The bottom or lower end of the guide-bar K is provided with the yoke K, to which yoke the front wheel L is journaled.
To the body A is pivotally attached the head M by means of the connecting-bar c, which connecting-bar extends into the lower portion of said head, substantially as illustrated in Fig. 1. The connecting-bar e is provided with the shoulder f, which shoulder is for the purpose of receiving the upper face of the nut g and prevent said nut from binding the head when it is screwed up against the shoulder f. The lower portion of the connecting-bar e is provided with the crossbar h, which cross-bar is for the purpose of providing a means for attaching the rods 72. Said rods extend rearward and are attached to the bar It, which bar is fixed to the guide-bar K. (It will be understoodthat the rods h may be formed of any suitable material, and, if desired, straps may take the place of the rods 71/.) To the bar are attached the cords it, which cords are for the purpose of operating the tail N.
To the body A are attached the leg-bars O, which leg-bars are located substantially as illustrated in Fig. l, and to the bottom or lower ends of the leg-bars O- are adjustably attached the brackets P by means of the set- ICO screw n. To the brackets P are secured the foot-plates P, which foot-plates are so adjusted that when the legs 0 and c are brought down the boots will strike said foot-plates, and thereby produce the natural sound of a moving horse.
For the purpose of providing a means for pivotally connecting the bell-crank I the crossbar P is provided, which cross-bar is attached to the bars P said bars P being securely attached to the body A, substantially as illustrated in Fig. 2.
It will be understood that the size of the sprocket-wheels O and D may be varied for the purpose of changing the speed and also the movements of the horse.
By providing the connecting-rods h or their equivalents and attaching them to the crossbars 71. and k the head M will move or turn upon its pivotal point in unison with the rotary movement of the guide-bars, thereby giving a life-like movement to the horse.
If desired, the foot-plates P may be formed hollow for the purpose of producing a louder sound as the feet strike said foot-plates.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the body A, provided with the pivoted legs 0 and c, the shaft B, provided with the sprocket-wheel O, the drivechain D, the sprocket-wheel D, the bell-crank I, the pitman H, and the guide-bar K, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the body A, provided with the pivoted head M, the connecting-bar e, provided with the cross-pin h, the rods h, and the guide-bar K, provided with the bar is, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination of the body A, provided with the pivoted legs 0 and c, the leg-bars 0, provided with the adjustable brackets P and the foot-plates P, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
WALDO V. SNYDER.
