Description

(No Model.)
' W. G. MATHEWS.
SASH HOLDER. No. 280,643. Patented July 3, 1883.,
I I I w 7 IN VENTOR, I pdfiam 4 WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM C. MATHEWS, OF SHENANDOAH, IOWA.
SASH-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,643, dated July 3, 1883. Application filed April 9, 1883. (Nomodeh) a citizen of the United States, residing at Shenandoah, in the county of Page and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners, and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has forits object to provide an improved sash lock or fastener, whereby the sash may be readily secured or held in place at any desiredpoint within the windowframe in the simplest and best possible manner; and it consists, essentially, of two arms or rods adjusted in suitable bearings upon the sash, and having contact knobs or surfaces at their outer ends, which are adapted to be drawn back from or forced against the window-frame by a central screw mechanism, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically designated in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my invention as applied to a window-sash, and Fig. 2 a detail view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in both figures. 7
Referring to the drawings, A represents the sash, which is adjusted within the windowframe B in the usual manner, and to the top or bottom rail of which is attached my improved fastener or lock, which is composed of two-arms or rods, 0, adjusted in the brackets or supports a, and projecting in opposite directions, as shown, the inner ends of the said arms or rods being provided, respectively, with a right and left hand screw-thread, which engages with the screw-rollers b at the center of the window-sash, while the outer ends of the said arms or rods 0 are provided with a knob orclamp, c, which stands at right angles to the arms or rods 0. The outer faces of the knobs or clamps c are each provided with a rubber or other suitable elastic pad, (1, as shown.
The construction of my invention being as dow-frame.
the central screw-rollers, b b, by the ball of the thumb or finger in one given direction forces the arms 0 outward and causes the'knobs or clamps c to press firmly against the windowframe, while the turning of the screw-roller in the opposite direction draws the rods or arms inwardly and releases the pressure of the knobs from the window-frame. The sash A can therefore be raised to any desired point in the window-frame, and securely held in place by simply turning the screw-roller until the knobs or clamps c are pressed firmly against the win- The sash can be released and lowered or raised at pleasure, or, when it is closed down or raised up to its full height, it can be securely held or locked in such position.
By means of my improvements it is not necframe in any manner, being applied simply to the sash by screws or other like fastenings, which may be easily removed or replaced in a few moments. The rubber or other elastic pads upon the knobs or clamps obviate all danger of scratching or injuring the wood-work of the window-frame.
My invention is especially adapted to window-sash which are not provided with weights or pulleys, although it is equally applicable to window-sash of all descriptions.
' I am aware of patents dated May 16, 1876, No. 177,556, and April 30, 1878, No. 203,232, and I do not claim such devices, broadly.
Having thus described my invention, wh at I claim as new and useful is- The combination, with the brackets a, of the arms 0, engaging the same, and provided, respectively, with right and left hand screwthreads at their inner ends, their outer ends having clamps 0, provided with elastic pads d, and the screw-threaded operating-roller b, engaging the threads of the arms 0, the whole adapted to be attached to the window-sash, in the manner shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM CLINTON MATHEWS.
