S IDING HOOK SQUARE.
No. 280,588. Patented July 3, 1883.

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
PETER DELANY, OF owAsco, NEW YORK.
SlDlNG-HOOK SQUARE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,588, dated July 3, 1883.
Application filed April 23, 182 3.
To on whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, PETER DELANY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Owasco,
in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Sidingobject is to provide a device possessing superior advantages in point of simplicity, inexpe'nsiveness, 1 convenience, and general efficiency. I In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device. Fig 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken through the pivot of the markingknife.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a plate having a longitudinal slot, B, in which is arranged to slide a block, 0. This block 0 is of approximately T form, its .head D being wider than the said slot B, and arranged to slide against one side of the plate A, while its stein E passes through the slot, and has a marking-knife, F, pivoted, as at G, to its edge at the other side of the slot. The knife or marker F preferably comprises a double-beveled marking-point, G, and a handle, H, as shown. At each end the plate A is provided with shoulders I I, both projecting on the same side and arranged laterally on the plate. From the edge J of one of these shoulders projects a hook-arm, K, at right angles to the main plate, and having a straight-edge, L, on the same plane as the edge J of the shoulder. A suitably-curved handle-bar, M, is arranged to extend outwardly from this hook K, as shown at N, from thence downwardly, as at O, and then inwardly, as shown at P, to the main plate A.
The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood by any one skilled in the art to which it appertains. In
siding a house, the hook is placed perpendicularly against the corner-board or easing on the window-frame, with the end of the siding projecting under the hook. Then by holding the device by the handle with one hand and tak ing hold of the handle of the marking-knife with the other hand, a stroke can be made with the knife to mark the siding ready for the saw.
ated with superior convenience and facility.
I-claim as my invention 7 1. The herein-described siding-hook square, comprising a main longitudinal plate having the lateral shoulders arranged on one side and at each end, the hook-arm projecting from the edge of one of these shoulders and having the straight edge on the same plane as the edge of the shoulder, and a handle-bar extending from this hook-arm down and inwardly to the main plate, as set forth.
2. The combination of a main plate having the longitudinal slot, the hook-arm projecting at one end of the said plate, at right angles to the latter, a handle-bar extending from this hook-plate down to the main plate, a block sliding in the slot, and a knife or marker pivoted on this block, as set forth.
3. The combination ofthe main plate having the longitudinal slot and the lateral shoulders arranged at each end, the hook-arm projecting at right angles to the main plate from the edge of one of the shoulders, and having its edge 011 the same plane as the edge of the shoulder, the block sliding in the slot, and the markingknife pivoted to the said block and comprising the marking-edge and handle, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in pres enee of two witnesses.
, PETER DELANY.
