Application March 12, 1956, Serial No. 570,843 1 Claim. (Cl. 211-135) This invention relates to metal tables, wherein the table top comprises closely arranged but spaced frames, wherein the frames are fxedly united and spaced by angleiron corner posts. More particularly, the invention deals with a corner post construction including upwardly projecting table top retaining members in alinement with the wall portions of said posts, thereby producing a neat and finished appearance at corner portions of the complete table unit.

The novel features of the invention will be best understood from the following description, when taken together with the accompanying drawing, in which certain embodiments of the invention are disclosed and, in which, the separate parts are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views and, in which:

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of one corner portion of a table top unit, showing one of my improved corner posts, with part of the construction broken away and in section; and

Fig. 2 is a section substantially on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.

In practice, I provide a table top unit consisting of upper and lower frames and 11 which, in the construction shown, are rectangular in form, the upper frame having a horizontal top wall 12 and a vertical outer wall 13; whereas, the lower frame 11 has a vertical outer wall 14 and a horizontal bottom wall 15. The latter, in some instances, can form a support for a lower table member of glass or other material, generally similar to the glass table top 16 shown, in part, in Fig. 2 of the drawing, the glass top 16 being omitted from the showing in Fig. 1 of the drawing.

12 and 15 are united at corner portions of the frames by angular junctions, one of which is indicated at 17 in Fig. l of the drawing, namely the junction between the walls 12. At 18 I have shown one of my improved corner posts which comprises a unitary angleiron member having angularly disposed

The corner post 18, or the

walls

19 and 20 thereof, include upwardly extending integral projecting members 23, adjacent portions of which are cutout, as indicated at 24, and the edges of the members at the cutouts are rounded, as indicated at 25. The cutouts at 24 permit the glass or other table top 16 to extend to the corner cutouts while, at the same time, fitting snugly upon the retaining members 23. It is also preferred that the height of the members 23 be substantially in alinement with the top of the table 16 so that no protruding edges will prevail.

By constructing table units, including the upper and lower frames in the manner described, and permanently assembling these frames with the unitary corner posts, which include the integral table top retaining members 23, the construction of metal tables of the type and kind under consideration has been materially simplified and, at the same time, produced in a stronger and more durable manner.

In addition to economizing on the cost of production, assemblage of the table frames facilitates shipment of the completely assembled unit, thus dispensing with assemblage by the purchaser and finally the structure in question produces a more practical construction for the resulting table.

Having fully described myinvention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: A table top unit comprising a pair of rectangular top and bottom table frames, each frame being of angleiron cross-sectional form, the top frame having a horizontal upper wall and a depending vertical wall, the bottom frame having a vertical wall in vertical alinement with the vertical wall of the top frame and a lower horizontal wall, said frames being integrally united and spaced by corner posts of angleiron cross-sectional form with the walls of the posts arranged upon the outer surfaces of and directly welded to the vertical walls of said frames, the Walls of said posts including upwardly projecting table top retaining members which extend above the upper surface of the horizontal upper wall of said top frame, and said members extending the major portion of the width of the walls of said post and terminating short of and adjacent the corners of said posts.
