Description

Dec. 20, 1960 s. DERMAN 2,965,241
KNOCKDOWN TABLES Filed Feb. 26, 1959 III/I III I I I I IN V EN TOR. 59M DERMfl/V BY QAM QW HTTORA/EY v United States Patent This invention relates to knockdown tables, particularly the kind referred to as the step-type employing main and supplemental table portions disposed one above the other. More particularly, the invention deals with a means of securing main and supplemental tables together and in spaced relation to each other, wherein such means also serves to ornament side panel portions of the resulting furniture.
The novel features of the invention will be best understood from the following description, when taken together with the accompanying drawing, in which certain embodiments of the invention are disclosed and, in which, the separate parts are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views and, in which:
Fig. l is an isometric view of a table made according to my invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged broken section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 omitting the showing of the leg and illustrating only part of the main and supplemental tables; and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, illustrating only part of the construction.
In practice, I provide a table comprising a main lower table 10, a supplemental upper table 11, joined and supported on the main table by two vertical similar panel portions 12, the main table being supported, at its four corners, by four similar leg members 13 arranged in an outwardly flared manner for sturdy support of the table.
Considering the main table 10, it will appear, from Fig. 2 of the drawing, that this table is constructed of a rectangular frame defined by rails 14, upon the upper surface of which is secured, in any suitable manner, a plastic finished grained hardboard or other type of table top 15. The supplemental table 11 also has rails 16, similar to the rails 14 and a top 17, similar to 15.
Each of the panels 12 have their inner surfaces recessed adjacent upper and lower ends thereof to form shoulders 18, note Fig. 2 of the drawing, one of which bears upon the table top 15 and the other upon the rails 16. The reduced upper and lower ends of the panels 12 have pairs of apertures, as at 19, adapted to receive coupling and ornamental devices 20, the ends 21 of which pass through the apertures 19 and apertures 22 and 23 in the rails 14, 16, respectively, the inner portions of the otfset ends 21 being threaded to receive wing nuts or similar fasteners, as at 24. It will be understood that, in securing the devices 20 in position, the exposed ornamental portions of the devices 20 are drawn firmly upon the outer surfaces of the panels 12 and the panels are drawn into firm engagement with outer surfaces of the rails 14 and 16, respcctively. The devices 20 may be of any desired shape or contour to characterize the outer exposed surfaces of the panels and with devices, as shown, it will appear that these devices will also serve to reinforce and strengthen the panels or the supporting properties of the upper supplemental table 11.
Secured at the four corner portions of the rails 14 are leg supporting blocks or plates 25, note Fig. 3 of the The upper ends of the legs have suitably fixed therein projecting threaded couplings 30 to engage the threaded sleeves 26 in securing the legs in position and also in detaching all of the legs from the main table 10. In the knockdown position of the table, it will be understood that the devices 20 are detached from both tables 10 and 11 and, thus, the panels 12 are detached, which results in leaving eight pieces for packaging in shipment and/or storage of the knockdown table. These eight pieces are defined by the two tables, two panels and four legs.
It will be understood that no attempt has been made to illustrate securing or attachment of the several parts of the tables. However, in Fig. 3, it will appear that the surface of the outermost rail 14 is shown without section to indicate the fact that the rails have the angular cut surfaces to abut one rail flushly with the other rail at the corner portions of the table.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A knockdown table, comprising a main leg supported table, a supplemental table of the same width as the main table, vertical panels arranged on outer sides of said tables and supporting the supplemental table above the main table, devices arranged upon outer exposed surfaces of the panels and detachably coupled with the main and supplemental tables for retaining the panels in supporting position in connection with the main and supplemental tables, the main and supplemental tables including bordering frames, said frames and upper and lower end portions of said panels having pairs of registering apertures, said devices each having angularly offset end portions arranged in the apertures of said frames and panels and protruding beyond the frames, and protruding ends of the devices being threaded to receive securing nuts firmly supporting surfaces of the panels on said outer sides of the frames of said main and supplemental tables.
2. In knockdown furniture, comprising main and supplemental tables, both tables being of the same width, four legs detachably coupled with corner portions of the main table, a pair of panels having means engaging outer sides and facing surfaces of both tables in definitely spacing the supplemental table with respect to the main table, fastening devices each having a pair of offset threaded ends mounted in the panels and tables and including portions arranged on outer surfaces of the panels, and means in threaded engagement with the threaded ends of said devices for securing the panels in coupled relationship with said tables.
3. In knockdown furniture, comprising main and supplemental tables, both tables being of the same width, four legs detachably coupled with corner portions of the main table, a pair of panels having means engaging outer sides and facing surfaces of both tables in definitely spacing the supplemental table with respect to the main table, fastening devices each having a pair of offset threaded ends mounted in the panels and tables and including portions arranged on outer surfaces of the panels, means in threaded engagement with the threaded ends of said devices for securing the panels in coupled relationship with said tables, and said portions of the devices arranged upon outer surfaces of the panels extending over the major portion of the vertical length of said surfaces of the panels.
3 4. In knockdown" furniture, comprising main and suppleme ntal tables, both tables being of the same width, four legs detachably coupled with corner portions of the main table, a pair of panels having means engaging outer sides and facing surfacesof both tables in definitely spacw' ing the supplemental table with respect tothe main table, fastening devices each having a pair of oifset threaded ends mounted in the panels and tables and including portions arranged on outer surfaces of the panel's, means in threaded engagement with the threaded ends of said devices for securing the panels in coupled relationship with said tables, the main table having blocks at corner portious thereof, means in said blocks and on the legs of the main table for detachably coupling the legs with the ingsurfaces for flared arrangement of the legs with re spect to the main table.
