It is an object of the present invention to provide a shopping bag carrier adapted to support the base of the bag on rollers to permit the lilled bag to be run along the supporting surface towards its destination without the necessity of having to lift the heavy bag olf the ground.

It is another object of the present invention to provide a shopping bag` and carrier therefor of the above type which may be conveniently carried in a large handbag type of container, the shopping bag being formed of knitted fabric which is foldable into a relatively small tube andthe carrier being separable into two portions adapted to be compactly received within the bag.

It is still another object of the present invention to provide a carrier `of `the above type including separable parts which are easily. and readily snapped together for operative use with a minimum of eiort.

It is still another object of the present invention to` provide a shopping bag` carrier of the above type which is readily adapted to conventional heavy paper shopping bags. p p

It is still another object of the present invention to provide a luggage carrier which will rollably support the luggage bag `and which includes novel means for releasably securing the carrier to the base of the leather bag.

Other objects of the present invention are to provide shopping bag carriers bearingthe above objects in mind which are of simple construction, inexpensive to manufacture, have a minimum number of parts, are easy to use and eiiicient in operation.

For other objects and a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure l is a perspectiveview of a shopping bag kit embodying the features of the present invention and showing the kit in a closed position ready for carrying;

Fig. 2 is an exploded perspective view of the parts comprising the present invention;

Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the shoping bag and carrier when assembled for operative use;

Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a modified form of the present invention adapted to heavy paper shopping bags;

Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional View taken along the line 5-5 of Fig. 4;

Referring now to the figures, and more particularly to Figs. l through 3, there is shown a shopping kit embodying the features of the present invention and including a large handbag-like container lil having a flat rigid base 2,798,731 Patented J'uly 9, 1957 l if@ 2 11, handle straps 12 and 13, a cover flap 14 having an opening 15 through which is received a buckle 16 carried by the bag and retained therein by a strap 17 secured to the back of the bag, `substantially as illustrated. During carrying, the strap 12 will be looped over the strap 13 and the upper portion of the latter will be held in the hand with the strap 17 passing through buckle 16 to secure the cover in the closed position. To open the bag it is only necessary to remove the strap 17 from buckle 16, as will be obvious. A hollow tube open at both ends 18 is provided and receives therein a rectangular bag 19 similar in shape to that of a conventional heavy paper shopping bag formed of knitted fabric so that the bag may be rolled up and inserted in the tube as shown in Fig. 2. The bag 19, however, is provided with a packet 20 formed by a layer of material 21 secured along its longitudinal edges to the bottom 22 of the bag 19 (Fig. 3). The bag 19 is provided with suitable carrying straps at each side at the upper edges thereof, not shown.

`As a means of supporting the bottom of bag 19 when the latter is filled with groceries or the like and eliminating the necessity of lifting the same for transportation purposes, a first plate 23 is provided at one end with a pair of ball bearing casters 24 secured thereto by screws 25, Fig. 2. The other end of the plate 23 is provided with an L-shaped slot 26 having an outwardly tapered side 27, the longitudinal sides of plate 23 at this end also being provided with the slots 28. A second plate 29 is integrally formed along each edge with upwardly extending flanges 3d adapted to receive therewithin the slotted portion 23 of plate 23, the end of the plate 29 being integrally formed with an upwardly and horizontally `bent portion 31 providing a three-sided pocket to receive the plate 23 andparticularly the slotted portion 26 thereof. The undersurface of plate 2'9 also has mounted thereon at the center thereof a ball bearingroller caster 32. The portion 31 `is provided with an opening 33 aligned with the inner end of slot26 and within which moves a depending pin or linger 34', carried at the inner end of a rotatable arm` 34 having a fingered lug 35. The arm 34 isA only necessary to press the linger lug 35 to remove the' depending linger 'from the inner end of slot`26 and to separate the plates. By this construction, the plate 23` may then be slid intermediate the bottom of bag 19 and the ilap 21 whereupon the plate 29 may then be snapped into place to provide a rollable support for the shopping bag 19 and to eliminate thereby the necessity of lifting the same from the ground when filled with groceries or the like, it being only necessary to pull or push the bag along the supporting surface. After the groceries have been delivered, the linger lug 35 is pressed. to permit the separation of

23 and 29 and their removal from the pocket 20 whereupon they are placed within bag 10 in the overlapping relation shown in dotted lines in Fig. l. The shopping bag 19 is then folded up into a compact unit and disposed within the tube 18 and likewise disposed within the bag which may then be closed and carried in the usual manner.

Referring now particularly to Figs. 4 through 9, there is shown a modified form of the present invention wherein a heavy paper shopping bag 36 having a pair of handle portions 37 is provided at each end at the very bottom thereof with transverse slots 38 making a supporting providedvwith slots .43, (Fig. k9) and an inwardlyeXtend-V, ingslot 44 vat the center thereofand acircularvopening,

This assembly will, however, be done after the plate40 has been inserted through the openings 38 in the bottom of bag 36, to provide a roller carriage-therefor, as` shown in Fig. 4. To disassemble, it is only necessary to press the can the plates of the carrier. A central roller 56 is provided below plate 46 and secured thereto by screws 57.

What is claimed is:

1., An article .of the class described comprising the com- Y bination of` a flexibleshopping bag open at the top-andy provided therealongwith gripping straps, a layer-of'material secured tothe bottom` of said flexible shoppingbag along its longitudinal edges whereby to provide a pocket having. openings at each Vend below the bottom lof said bag, a iirst plate adapted to be slid intermediate the bottom of said bag and said layer of material fromone end and through said openings, roller means provided` on the bottom of said plate at one end, a second plateadapted to receive the free end of saidirst plateat the otherr endof said, bag, roller means on the bottom of said second plate, and releasa-blemeansl for securing said first and second plates together intermediate said layer of material andthe bottom of said shopping bag. i

An article according to claim 1, said releasable means vfor securing said plates together comprising saidl first plate at the free end thereof-,ateach longitudinal side having an edge recess, said plate at said end at its central portion having a substantially L-shaped slot, saidsecond plate being provided `along opposite longitudinalfedges with upwardly extending flanges adapted to be received within said edge recesses, said second plate having an upwardly and horizontally bent plate portion providing a pocket adapted to receive the slotted end of said irst plate therewithin, said upwardly and horizontally bent plate portion of said Second plate having an opening aligned with the inner end of said L-shaped slot, and a rotatable arm having a depending nger provided on the top of said upwardly and horizontally bent portion to cooperate with the L-shaped slot, to secure said two plates together.

3. The combination with a shopping bag having lateral end openings at the bottom of` each end of a lirst plate adapted to slide through one of said openings above the bottom of the paper bag, roller means provided on the undersurface of said first plate at the outer end thereof, a second plate adapted to pass through the other yof said transverse openings and adapted to receive the other end of said first plate in snug relationship, roller means on the bottom of said second plate and releasable, means forl securing said first and second plates together within said openings.k
