Bellamy, Salt Lake City, Utah Application May 28, 1954, Serial'No. 433,217 r 4 Claims. (Cl. l9041) This invention relates to a traveling bag and more a particularly to a bag of the roll type.

It is an important object of the invention to provide a traveling bag of the roll type especially suitable for use by seamen, although not limited to such use.

More particularly, it is an object of the invention to provide a luggage carrierof the roll type wherein a pair of compartments are provided, one of which may be employed for reception of shoes, shaving kit or the like, while the other or larger compartment is employed for housing a hollow cylinder upon which wearing apparel, such as a suit of clothing may be neatly wrapped and retained upon the cylinder; the interior of the cylinder forming storage space for additional clothing, such as shirts, neckties, socks and the like.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a flexible supporting means for the cylinder when disposed within the luggage carrier.

Additional objects, advantages and features of invention will be apparent from the following description considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, wherein,

Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the traveling bag constructed in accordance with the invention, taken on the line 1 1 of Figure 2.

Figure 2 is a cross section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.

Figure 3 is a perspective view of the cylinder removed from the traveling bag.

Figure 4 is an enlarged perspective view of the carrier in open position with the cylinder removed.

There is illustrated a traveling bag generally indicated by the reference character which may be formed of leather or suitable plastic sheet material, the bag being i of substantially cylindrical shape, defined by a pair of identically shaped

semi-cylindrical wall sections

11 and 12, the lower edges of which are secured to a base compartment 13 which may be provided with a partition 14.

The upper ends of the

walls

11 and 12 are suitably connected to

respective closure elements

15 and 16, the former being interleaved with the latter and include any acceptable locking means as at 17. The closure element 16 is provided with a handle 18.

End walls 19 are integral with the

outer wall sections

11 and 12 and are hingedly connected to the end walls 20 of the base compartment 13 as at 21. If desired, the end walls 19 may be provided with any suitable reinforcement for the sake of rigidity, as indicated in Figure 1.

A pair of flexible straps 22 are employed, respective ends 23 being secured upon the inner faces of the

closure elements

15 and 16. The straps 22 are of a length to encircle a cylindrical receptacle 24 and as seen in Figure 2 supports the receptacle in suspended spaced concentric relation to the

outer wall sections

11 and 12.

The receptacle 24 is employed to pack garments, such as shirts and socks therein, while other clothing such as a suit or suits indicated at 28 are rolled in a neat and orderly fashion upon the exterior thereof. In order that the clothing may be properly retained thereon, a strap 29 is provided, extending lengthwise of the receptacle, one end being secured thereto as at 30, the free end of the strap being engaged in a suitable fastener 31 fixed to the receptacle as at 32.

The base compartment 13 may be employed for storageof various articles such as a shaving kit, tooth brush and the like.

In use, with the traveling bag in closed position and it is desired to unpack the bag, the

11 and 12 will be moved to open position which will move the straps 22 into substantially horizontal position and hav ing elevated the receptacle 24 above the

wall sections

11 and 12 to a convenient position for removal of the receptacle 24. Upon removal of the receptacle, the strap 29 may be released and the clothing 28 which was rolled on the exterior of the receptacle 24 may be removed. Access to the interior of the receptacle 24 may be had upon removal of the closure 26. Obviously with the removal of the receptacle 24 access to the base receptacle 13 may be readily had.

While I have shown and described a preferred form of the invention, this is by way of illustration only, and I consider as my own all such modifications as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.

I claim:

1. A luggage carrier comprising a base compartment, a pair of semi-cylindrical wall sections having end walls hingedly connected thereto, the upper end of each of said wall sections having closure elements, one of said closure elements having a handle, fiexible strap members having respective ends secured to the inner face of said closure elements and intermediate portions disposed within said semi-cylindrical wall sections, and a cylindrical receptacle of such dimensions as to be received within said wall sections and supported in suspended position by said straps.

2. A luggage carrier comprising a base compartment, a pair of semi-cylindrical wall sections having end walls hingedly connected thereto, the upper end of each of said wall sections having a closure element, one of said closure elements having a handle, flexible strap members having respective ends secured to the inner face of said closure elements and intermediate portions disposed within said semi-cylindrical wall sections, a cylindrical receptacle of such dimensions as to be received within said wall sections and supported in a suspended position by said straps, said cylindrical receptacle having a removable end closure permitting access into the interior of said receptacle for storage of garments.

A luggage carrier comprising a base compartment, a pair of semi-cylindrical wall sections having end walls hingedly connected thereto, the upper end of each of said wall sections having closure elements, one of said closure elements having a handle, flexible strap members having respective ends secured to the inner face of said closure elements and intermediate portions disposed within said semi-cylindrical wall sections, a cylindrical receptacle of such dimensions as to be received within said wall sections and supported in a suspended position by said strap members, and said cylindrical receptacle having strap means secured thereto and extending lengthwise thereof adapted to secure clothing wrapped upon the exterior of the receptacle.
