I SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 279,703, dated June 19, 1883.

I LEONARD MANGOLD, citizens of the United States, residing at Chattanooga, in the county of Hamilton and State of Tennessee, have'invented certain new'and useful Improvements in Service-Pipe Boxes; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in street-boxes for the protection of and to give access to the cooks of gas and water service-pipes; and it has for its object to provide a box that may be readily set in the ground over the pipe, and the cover of which may be securely fastened down so that it cannot be raised, except by persons familiar with the construction of its locking devices. These objects we attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective View of our improved box with the cover raised, showing the interior locking mechanism; and Fig. 2 represents a top view of the same, showing the cover closed.
The letter A indicates the body of the box, which is constructed intwo telescoping parts, so that its height may be conveniently adjusted to the depth of the pipe. The lower end of the lower part is made flaring and slotted, so as to set over the pipe and the valve or cook. The upper part of the box is provided with a flat plate, B, having a central opening, 0, at one side of which are formed slots D, in which are pivoted the arms E of the lid or cover, forming a hinged joint for the same. The cover is provided with a circular projection, F, which sets down into the openingxO when the cover is closed, and the upper partof said cover consists of a flat plate, G which rests upon the plate B when the cover is'down. The upper part of the cover has a central depression, and through the center of said cover extends a short shaft or stud, which at its lower end is provided with two lugs extending at right angles to each other and formed on different planes, the outer or upper end of said shaft or stud being provided with a cross-bar, H, which is adapted to turn freely in the circular recess. The plate B, at one side of the opening 0, below, is formed with an inclined cam-bearing, I and opposite the hinged connection, with a curved passage, K, to permit the lugs to pass into and out of the opening as the door is closed and opened, as more fully hereinafter specified. The box at the juncture of the upper main portion and its flat plate is provided with strengthening-brackets L, as indicated'in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
When the door is closed and locked the cross-bar at the top of the door will be in the position shown in Fig. 2 the upper lug being directly under the end of the crossbar H and the lower lug under the hinged portion of the cover and top plate, 0, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. cross-bar is turned until the point A comes opposite B, when the door is partly lifted, the upper lug lifting up through the curved passage K. The cross-bar is then turned until the point A comes opposite (I, when the cover may be wholly lifted, the lower lug then lifting out through the curved passage.
To open the door the' Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 4 The combination, in a street-box for water and gas service pipes, of the main body having a flat plate at its upper end provided with a cylindrical opening, with the hinged cover, provided with a central shaft having lugs at right angles to each other, and the cross-bar, the flat plate at the opening being provided with a passage for the lugs on the cover, and with an inclined cam-bearing to hold said lug, substantially as specified.
