Claims. (Cl. 282-16)- This. invention relates to autographic registers, and more particularly to an. improved sheet-holding attachment for. an autographic register of the type employing superimposed strips which are advanced: each. time an entry is made on the register, the uppermost strip being detached and the lowermost strip beingretainedr.
A main object of the invention is to providea novel and improved magazine attachment for an autographic register, said attachment being simplerin. construction, being easy to install, and being easy to replenish with super.- imposed strip material, whenever. necessary A. further object of the invention is. to provide an improved sheet-holding magazine attachment for an autographic register, said attachment. being inexpensive to fabricate, being'compact in-size, being neat in appearance, and. being durable in construction. A still further object of the invention is to provide an lmproved sheet-holding magazine attachment for an autographic register of the type using superimposed paper strips wherein the uppermost strip is detached and the lowermost strip isretained, the improvedma-gazine at.- tachmentincluding means providing easy access to the paper feed compartment thereof whenever required; being provided with means for facilitating the splicing of'a new section of superimposed paper material to the end of a previously used strip, so as to provide continuity in the strips retained in the magazine attachment, and: being provided with improved means for holding the: superimposed strips while an entry is made on the autographic register whereby proper tension is maintained in the strip on which the entry is being inscribed, and whereby the movement of the strips through the autographic register is accurately controlled to maintain the strips ina smooth and aligned position in the register and to prevent 1mdesired rearward movement of the strips;

Referring to the drawings, 11 designates an autographic register top portion of the type comprising'a' generally rectangular housing 12 having a window 13" in its top wall overlying a horizontal rigid plate element 14 on which superimposed sheets of register strip' material 15 are supported when an entry is to bemade on the strips. As shown inFigure 4, the housing 12 isprovidedat its forward portion with a bottom opening 25' through which the. superimposed strips are admitted. into the housing 12 and pass over the forward transverse roller 19.
Designated generally at 23 is a magazine attachment according to this. invention arranged to: support the. autographic register top portion 11 on its top wall,.said magazine attachment comprising'a generally rectangular housing 24 having a hinged front closure member 25. at. its forward end and a hinged rear closure member 26 at its rear end, said closure members being, provided'with resilient latch elements, shown respectively at 27 and 28 which are engageable with aside wall 29 of the housing 24 to releasably hold the closure members in closed positions, as shown in Figure l.
The housing 24 is provided at its intermediate portion with a transverse verticalpartition member 29. defining a: forward space 30 in the housing-adapted to=receive-a stack of: folded superimposed register sheets, shown at 31', and a rear space32 adapted to. receive. the folded retained register strips 23', as shown in Figure 4. As shown in Figure 4, the superimposed: register strips from the supply stack- 31 extend upwardly and are fl 1C! tionally engaged between the free transverse edge of the enemies i leaf member 33 and the flange and pass through the i opening 25 in the bottom of the autographic register top portion 11 and over the forward transverse roller 19' of the register. The leaf member 33 acts to frictionally hold the superimposed strips againstfree movement and to maintain the superimposed strips inv proper {alignment and'under proper tension as the strips are supplied to the autographic register top portion, preventing creasing or tearing of the register strips as the strips are pulled through the autographic register top portion and preventing undesired rearward movement of the strips;
The free edge of the leaf member 33 may obviously have any desired cross sectional configuration, for example, may be arcuately curved in transverse cross section, may be provided with a header flange, or may be merely a straight edge of planar configuration.
The side walls of the housing 24 are provided at their top portions with angle brackets 37 to the top horizontal flanges of which are adjustably secured additional angle brackets 38, said angle brackets having their vertical flanges 39 provided with horizontal open-ended slots 40 which interengage with fastening bolts 41 extending through the side walls of the housing 12 of the autographic register top portion 11, said bolts being provided on their outer ends with wing nuts 42, whereby the autographic register top portion 11- may be rigidly clamped to the housing 24 of the magazine attachment 23, and may be readily detached therefrom, whenever desired.
As shown, the superimposed horizontal flanges of the angle brackets 37 and 38 areprovided with registering transversely directed slots 44, whereby autographic register top portions of varying widths may be secured on the magazine attachment 23.
The hinged end closures 25 and 26 of the housing 24 are provided with central vertical viewing slots 47 so that the respective stacks of strips in the spaces 30 and 32 may be visually observed without opening the hinged closures. However, access to the respective spaces 30 and 32 may be readily obtained, whenever necessary, by opening the closure members 25 and 26, as for replenishing the supply of superimposed register strips, or for removing the accumulated retained record strips 23 in the space 32.
When the supply of superimposed autographic register strips 31 becomes depleted, it is of course necessary to replenish said supply, and this is done by splicing a new stack of superimposed register strips, shown at 48, to the end of the original superimposed register strips, shown at 49, in Figure 3. To facilitate this operation, a generally rectangular flat rigid support plate St] is hinged transversely at 51 to the bottom front corner of the housing 24, the plate member being of substantial size and being normally arranged to underlie the bottom wall of housing 24, a resilient supporting clip 52 being provided on the bottom wall of housing 24, lockingly engageable with the free transverse marginal portion of the plate 50 to retain said plate normally subjacent to the bottom wall of housing 24. As shown in Figure 4, the plate 50 may be readily disengaged from the retaining spring clip 52 and swung counterclockwise, as viewed in Figure 4, to a position forwardly adjacent to the forward end of the housing 24, as shown in Figure 3. The respective sides of the plate 50 are connected at their intermediate portions to the lower marginal portions of the side walls of housing 24 by respective pairs of link bars 53 and 54 which are normally folded, as shown in Figure l, but which may be unfolded to substantially aligned positions, as shown in Figure 3, to support the plate 50 in a downwardly and forward inclined position with respect to the forward end of housing 24, whereby the strip ends to be spliced may be supported on said plate member 50.
The plate member 50 may be provided at its respective side margins with the spaced pins 55 arranged to enter the sprocket holes 18 in the strips so as to support the strip ends to be spliced in proper relationship so that the sprocket holes of the strips will be in the sprocket pins 17 on the roller 16.
Obviously, if so desired, the pins 55 may be omitted and the plate 50 may be merely employed as a support for the strip ends while they are being spliced together.
Figures 6 and 7 illustrate a modification of the invention provided with means for adding an additional supply of superimposed autographic register strips before the previous supply becomes entirely depleted.
Thus, respective pairs of plate members 60, 60 are pivotally connected to the opposite side walls 29 at 61 in the same horizontal plane at a substantial height above the bottom wall of housing 24 and adjacent the space 30. Each plate member 60 is provided with a bracket 62 in which is slidably mounted a transverse pin 63 biased inwardly by a coiled spring 64 acting between the outer wall of the bracket and a collar 65 on pin 63, said pin extending through platernember 60 and being engageable through an aperture 66 in wall 29, as shown in Figure 7. Normally the plate members 60 are positioned in'depending relation to their pivots 61; When it is desired to add an additional supply of register strips, the plate members 60 are rotated to the positions of Figures 6 and 7, wherein the pins 63 pass through the apertures 66 and protrude internally in space 30.
A rigid plate 67 is disposed below the supply 68 of superimposed register strips in space 30. The plate 67 and supply of strips 68 are elevated to the position shown in Figure 6 before the'plate members 60 are rotated to positions wherein the pins 63 may pass through the apertures 66. When the plate members 60 are rotated to these positions, the pins 63 engage beneath the side edges of plate 67, supporting said plate 67 in elevated position. The end of a new stack of register strips may then be spliced to the end of the original stack 68. The new stack is placed beneath the original stack after splicing, and the plate 67 is then removed. The plate members 60 are then swung to their normal depending positions, after retracting the pins 63 from the apertures 66.
The housing 24 is provided at its respective corner portions with the respective vertical supporting legs 57 which are of sufiicient length to provide adequate clearance for the plate 50 and the retaining clip 52 therefor, as well as for the pins 55' which extend downwardly, as shown in Figure 4, when the plate member 50 is disposed in its normal housed position beneath the bottom wall of housing 24.
While a specific embodiment of an improved autographic register has been disclosed in the foregoing description, it will be understood that various modifications within the spirit of the invention may occur to those skilled in the art. Therefore, it is intended that no limitations be placed on the invention except as defined by the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
l. A sheet-holding magazine adapted to be employed as a support for an autographic register top portion, comprising a rectangular housing having horizontal top and bottom walls, vertical side walls, and vertical transverse front and rear walls, means for securing an autographic register top portion on said top wall, transverse partition means in the intermediate portion of said housing defining a first space in the forward portion thereof adapted to receive a stack of superimposed folded register strips prior to their passage through the register top portion and a second space in the rear portion of the housing adapted to receive the register strips after they have passed through said top portion, the top wall of said housing being formed with a transverse slot located over said first space, whereby said register strips may be fed to the autographic register top portion, and being formed with a transverse aperture located over said second space, defining an entrance passage for the register strips leading to said second space.

A sheet-holding magazine adapted to be employed as a support for an autographic register top portion, comproper registry with prising a rectangular housing having horizontal top and bottom walls, vertical side walls and vertical transverse front and rear walls, means for securing an autographic register top portion on said top wall, transverse partition means in the intermediate portion of said housing defining a first space in the forward portion thereof adapted to receive a stack of superimposed folded register strips prior to their passage through the register top portion and a second space in the rear portion of the housing adapted to receive the register strips after they have passed through said top portion, said top wall terminating a substantial distance from said front wall and having an upstanding transverse flange at its terminating edge, and a leaf member hinged transversely to the top forward end of said housing and having its free transverse edge extending parallel to and located adjacent to said upstanding flange, defining therewith a transverse slot located over said first space, whereby said register strips may be fed to the autographic register top portion, said top wall being formed with a transverse aperture located over said second space, defining an entrance passage for the register strips leading to said second space.

A sheet-holding magazine adapted to be employed as a support for an autographic register top portion, comprising a rectangular housing having horizontal top and bottom walls, vertical side walls, and vertical transverse front and rear walls, means for securing an autographic register top portion on said top Wall, transverse partition means in the intermediate portion of said housing defining a first space in the forward portion thereof adapted to receive a stack of superimposed folded register strips prior to their passage through the register top portion and a second space in the rear portion of the housing adapted to receive the register strips after they have passed through said top portion, said top wall terminating a substantial distance from said front wall and having an upstanding transverse flange at its terminating edge, a leaf member hinged transversely to the top forward end of the housing and having its free transverse edge extending parallel to and located adjacent to said upstanding flange, defining therewith a transverse slot located over said first space, whereby said register strips may be fed to the autographic register top portion, said top wall being formed with a transverse aperture located over said second space, defining an entrance passage for the register strips leading to said second space, said vertical transverse front wall being formed with a door opening, and a door hinged vertically to said housing at one side of said door opening and providing access to said first space.

A sheet-holding magazine adapted to be employed as a support for an autographic register top portion, comprising a rectangular housing having horizontal top and bottom Walls, vertical side walls, and vertical transverse front and rear walls, means for securing an autographic register top portion on said top wall, transverse partition means in the intermediate portion of said housing defining a first space in the forward portion thereof adapted to receive a stack of superimposed folded register strips prior to their passage through the register top portion and a second space in the rear portion of the housing adapted to receive the register strips after they passed through said top portion, said top wall terminating a substantial distance from said front wall and having an upstanding transverse flange at its terminating edge, a leaf member hinged transversely to the top forward end of the housing and having its free transverse edge extending parallel to and located adjacent to said upstanding flange, defining therewith a transverse slot located over said first space, whereby said register strips may be fed to the autographic register top portion, said top wall being formed with a transverse aperture located over said second space, defining an entrance passage for the register strips leading to said second space, said vertical transverse front wall being formed with a door opening, a door hinged vertically to said housing at one side of said door opening and providing access to said first space, a flat rigid strip-supporting member movably connected to the forward end portion of said bottom wall, releasable means normally supporting said strip-supporting member below and adjacent said bottom wall, and means whereby said supporting member may be at times rotated to a position disposed forwardly of said door opening, whereby superimposed register strips may be supported thereon for splicing.

A sheet-holding magazine adapted to be employed as a support for an autographic register top portion, comprising a rectangular housing having horizontal top and bottom walls, vertical side walls, and vertical transverse front and rear Walls, means for securing an autographic register top portion on said top wall, transverse partition means in the intermediate portion of said housing defining a first space in the forward portion thereof adapted to receive a stack of superimposed folded register strips prior to their passage through the register top portion and a second space in the rear portion of the housing adapted to receive the register strips after they have passed through said top portion, said top wall terminating a substantial distance from said front wall and having an upstanding transverse flange at its terminating edge, a leaf member hinged transversely to the top forward end of the housing and having its transverse edge extending parallel to and located adjacent to said upstanding flange, defining therewith a transverse slot located over said first space, Whereby said register strips may be fed to the autographic register top portion, said top wall being formed with a transverse aperture located over said second space, defining an entrance passage for the register strips leading to said second space, said vertical transverse front wall being formed with a door opening, a door hinged vertically to said housing at one side of said door opening and providing access to said first space, a fiat rigid strip-supporting member movably connected to the forward end portion of said bottom Wall, releasable means normally supporting said strip-supporting member below and adjacent said bottom wall, means whereby said supporting member may be at times rotated to a position disposed forwardly of said door opening, whereby superimposed register strips may be supported thereon for splicing, and respective spaced rows of pins mounted on the side marginal portions of the strip-supporting member, said pins being spaced to enter sprocket holes provided in the side marginal portions of the superimposed register strips.
