This invention relates to autographic registers. An object of this invention is to provide an autographic register of the character described having improved band or belt means for advancing the register forms.
'A further object of this invention is to provide, in an autographic register of the character described improved means for carrying the carbon sheets for use in conjunction with the regist'er forms. j
A still further object of this invention is to provide'an autographic register of the character described having improved means for stopping the advance movement of the register forms after predetermined travel.
Still another object of this invention is to provide in a machine of the character described, highly improved means for separating one of the register forms and refolding the same within the machine.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a neat, compact and rugged machine of the character described which shall be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, simple to operate and manipulate, and withal, practical and efficient to a high degree in use.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out. I This invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplifiedin the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.

Referring now in detail to the drawings, I0
designates an autographic register embodying the invention. The same comprises a case or box Il having a bottom wall I2. To the longitudinal side edges of said wall are attached as by screws i l or in any other suitable manner, vertical, upstanding, parallel side walls I5, the top edges whereof are inclined at the front half. Fixed to the lower corners of the side walls I5, closely adjacent to the bottom Wall I2, are cross-rods I8 and I9. Hinged to said cross-rods are end walls 23 and 2|, normally urged upwardly into vertical position by torsion springs mounted on the cross-rods. The Wall 23 has side flanges 28a receiving the adjacent end edges of the side walls I5, whereas the end wall 2| has parallel flanges 2Ia. receiving the adjacent edges of the side walls I5.
Fixed to the top surface of the bottom wall I2, at substantially the mid-portion thereof, is a channel-shaped member 24 having a bottom wall 25 contacting the upper surface of said bottom wall, and a pair of parallel upstanding walls 26 parallel to end walls 20 and M. Said member 24 serves to divide the case II into a front compartment 21 wherein is placed the usual folded register forms 28, and a-rear compartment 29 for receiving the refolded sheet 30 forming part of the register forms 28.
The register forms 28 may comprise three sheets folded together back and forth at equidistant longitudinal lengths into similar sections along scored lines 32 into a zigzagging pile. The individual sheets which comprise the register forms are each provided, adjacent the folded and scored portions 32, with a pair of spaced openings 33 in each section.
Fixed to the side walls I5 of the case, adjacent the upper rear corner of said side walls, is a shaft 35 on which are rotatably mounted, in any suitable manner, a pair of spaced pulleys or wheels 31, each formed with a central peripheral groove 38 for the purpose hereinafter appearing.
Rotatably mounted in hearings on said side walls i5 is a shaft 39 parallel with the shaft 35 and located substantially above the separating member 24. The shaft 39 projects beyond one of the side walls, and fixed to said projecting end, is a crank handle 40 for rotating said shaft. Fixed to said shaft are a pair of spaced pulleys iI aligned with the pulleys 31, and each formed with a plurality of peripheral, equiangularly spaced holes or recesses 42. It will now be understood that the pulleys 4 I, as well as the pulleys 3?, are spaced apart a distance equal to the space between the pairs of openings 33 in the register forms 29. Received on each pair of aligned pulleys 3l-4l is a band or belt 43 preferably of flexible sheet metal, such as steel. Said bands are formed along the longitudinal center thereof with a plurality of indented portions 44 adapted to engage within the openings 42 of the wheels n as said wheels are rotated. Due to the engagement of the indented portions 44 within the recesses 42, movement of the belts or bands 43 without slipping, is insured upon rotating the handle 46. The indented portions 44 will be re ceived within the peripheral groove 38 of the pulleys 5? as clearly shown in Figs. 1 to 4 of the drawings. I
Fixed to each band are a plurality of pins 46 extending outwardly therefrom. ,The, pins 46 are spaced apart a distance equal the length of each folded section of the register forms 28, or in other words, the distance between one pair of openings 33 and the next adjacent pair of openings 33. As shown in the drawings, each belt has three pins 46 and is thus divided into three equal lengths, the total length of each band or belt thus being equal to the length of three sections of the register forms 28. As shown in the drawings furthermore, pins of one belt are aligned with the pins of the other belt for the purpose hereinafter appearing.
Fixed to the top of the case is a cover 59 resting on the top edges of the side walls [5 and having at the rear thereof, downwardly extending side flanges 5! receiving the upper edges of the said side walls !5. Said member 56 furthermore may have fixed to the front downwardly inclined writing table portions 50. thereof, a plate provided with a downwardly extending curved portion 52, projecting into the case adjacent to, but spaced from, the front wall 2 I. At the endof the rear portion 59 of member 50 and overlying the belts and pulleys is a curved portion 53 which is curved about the pulleys 31 and spaced therefrom. Said portion 59 of member 59 is formed with longitudinal parallel slots 54 through which pass the pins 46 as the crank handle 40 is rotated. The slots 54 may extend partially into the curved portion 53, said portion being curved on a gradually increasing radius and away from the periphery of the pulleys 31. The cover 50 is formed, adjacent one of said edges thereof, with a slot 56 disposed above the shaft 39 for the purpose hereinafter explained.
Said downwardly curved portion 52 of the cover has a pair of aligned, spacedslots 56 *receiving threaded reduced ends of a pair of spaced parallel substantially horizontal pins 56'. Nuts 56 screwed to the threaded ends of said pins serve to fix said pins in adjusted position. The register forms passing between said pins and onto the cover are guided by said pins. The cover is furthermore formed with a pair of short aligned longitudinal slots 5-! spaced apart the width of the register forms and likewise disposed substantially above the shaft 39. Fixed to one side edge of the cover 59 is one end of a strip spring 60 extending longitudinally of said edge. The use of said spring will be explained hereinafter.
Fixed to the upper front extreme corners of the side walls i 5 is a shaft and pivoted on such shaft is a framing plate66 adapted to extend,
when moved to substantially horizontal position, over the front half or writing table portion 50 of the cover 59.
The plate 66 has side flanges 68 receiving the shaft 65 and is formed with a central oblong opening 68 for the purpose hereinafter appearing. The outer end of the plate 66 is curved downwardly as at 69 and terminates in an edge 70. The sides of the plate 66 are cut away as at 12, adjacent the outer end thereof, forming shoulders 73. Fixed to the under side of the portion 15 of the plate 66 in front of the opening 68*, is a member 16 having outwardly extending depressed wings 11. There is also fixed to the under side of the portion 15 of the plate 66 on opposite sides of the member 16, symmetrical members 19 having depressed portions BO aligned with the wings TI, and members 8! having downwardly extending portions 82 adapted to extend within the slots 51 of the cover 59, when the plate 66 is swung downwardly to the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
As shown'in the drawings, the register forms 28 pass from the compartment 2'! over the writing table or platen 59 the pins 46beingreceivedwithin the spaced openings 33, whereby the register forms may be pulled or advanced rearwardly over the writing table on rotation of. the crank handle 49. The register forms pass between the cover 50 and the frame plate66. A pair of spaced springs 96 mounted on a shaft 65 serve to press the register forms down against the top of the cover 50. The top register form may of course be seen through the opening 68 in the framing plate 66,
exposing themajor portion of said top sheet to permit writing thereon. The wings T! of the members 16 and the portions 96 of the members IQ-hold the register forms down on the cover 50. The downwardly extending portions 82 of the members 8| serve as a guide between which are received the register forms 28.
Means is provided to regulate the feeding movement or travel of the register forms whereby said travel is stopped each time the register forms are moved the length of one section between the scored or folded portions 32 is fixed to one of the side walls l5, below the shaft 39, a horizontal pin 85. Pivoted to said pin and extending upwardly through the slot 56 in the cover. 56 is a flat lever 86 parallel to said side wall l5 and having at the upper end thereof a forwardly extending hook 81 adapted to engage the adjacent shoulder I3 of the plate 66 to hold said plate down against the register forms.
The pin is formed with a head 88 and received on saidpin is acoil compression spring 89 contacting said head and engaging the lever 86. Said lever 861s formedwith a central opening 96 having a spiral edge 9| extending through an,
angle of 360 degrees Interconnecting the inner and-outer ends of the spiral edge 9l is a radial To this end, there tends to a semi-circular peripheral, portion 91.
The radius of the portion 97 is equal to the smallest radius of the spiral edge 9| of the opening 99. Thus, when the parts are in a position shown in Fig; 1 with the shoulder engaging the shoulder 92 and the hook portion BI'engaging the shoulder "l3 of the plate 66, the lever 86 may be swung about the pin 85 in acounter-clockwise direction about pin 85 to the position shown'in Fig. 6. of
the drawings, disengaging the hook 8! from the shoulder 13. In such position, the shoulder 92 has moved away from and cleared the shoulder 95 and the shaft 39 together with its cam 94' may be rotated in a counter-clockwise direction, looking at Fig. 6 of the drawings; Such rotation of the shaft, will rotate the wheels 4| to move the bands '43 and cause a gradual pivotal movement of the lever 86 in a clockwise direction, from the position shown in Fig. 6 to the position shown in Fig. 1. After a complete turn of the shaft 39, the shoulder 95 of the cam 94 again strikes the shoulder 92 to stop rotation of the shaft. Rotation of thewheels BI is thus limited to 360 degrees. The peripheral length of each of the pulleys 4| is equal to the length between two adjacent pins 46 and the distance between adjacent pins on the belt equal to the length of one section of the reg.- ister forms 28, so that the register forms are adyanced one section each time the shaft 39 is rotated one revolution. At the end of one complete rotation of the. handle and shaft, the scored lines 32 of the register forms are at the edge 10 of plate 66.
Thereafter, to again advance the register forms,
the lever must again be moved from the position shown in Fig. 1 to the position shown in Fig. 6, releasing plate. 66.
Means is provided for refolding the bottom sheet 30 of the register forms 28 into the compartment 29 of the case as the register forms are advanced on the machine. .To this end, there is fixed to the cover 50 a separating member 00 adjacent .to and somewhat spaced above said cover. The member I may be supported on spacing strips IOI mounted on the cover 50 adjacent the side edges thereof. The member I00 ex tends from the rear of the machine to a point -beneaththe' portion 15 of the plate 66, terminating in an edge I02. Said member I00 has at the rear aportion I03 curved around, but somewhat spaced from the curved portion 53 of the cover 50. Extending from the curved portion I03, beneath the. belts 43, is a portion I04 extending substantially half the distance between the shafts 35 and 39. The member I00 is formed with longitudinal slots- I06 registering with the slots 54 of the cover 50.

' It will now be understood that the forms are advanced by rotation of the handle 40; the sheets 30 and 30 moving above the member I 00 and the bottom sheet moving between member I00 and cover 50. The bottom sheet 30 will pass into the, compartment 29 of the casing and fold into a zigzagging stack. The plate I00 is formed with 'slots 51; registering with the slots 51 and likewise receiving the downwardly extending portions 82 of the members 8| fixed to plate 66.
7 Means is provided for lifting the top two sheets 30*, 30 off pins 46. To this end, there is fixed to said member I00, adjacent the rear thereof, an upwardly curved plate I01. As the register forms are advanced one section, the plate I01 will lift the outer edges of sheets 30 30 of the pins 46 and present free edges of said sheets, which may be grasped to tear said sheets off against edge 10 of plate. 66. It will be noted that when the top two sheets 30* and 30? are to be severed after the register forms have been advanced one section, the hook 81 is in engagement with the plate 56 to hold the same downwardly so that the sheets 30 and 30 may be pulled against the edge 10 to sever such sheets.
It will now be understood that the register forms are pulled by the belts rearwardly over the writing table, the register forms thus being withdrawn from compartment 21 then passing over the writing table and a sheet thereof being returned in folded condition to the compartment 29. The belts and pulleys are located beneath the rear of the cover and rearwardly of the writing table portion of the cover so as to pull the forms.
Means is provided for dispensing carbon sheets to be used in conjunction with the register forms. To this end, the side wall I opposite to the wall on which the lever 86 is mounted, is provided with a pair of spaced headed screws or rivets I|0. Mounted thereon is a container I I I having a substantial semi-cylindrical portion H2, end walls H3, and a downwardly extending flange 4 formed with slots II5 to receive the shank portions of the screws or rivets H0. The heads of the rivets engage said flange to hold the container against wall I5. The upper edge I I6 of the semicylindrical portion 3 is somewhat spaced from the adjacent side wall I5. Within the container I I I is a roll of carbon paper from which there unrolls a double sheet of carbon paper. One of the carbon sheets is passed between the sheets 30 and 30 of the register forms, whereas the other carbon sheet is passed between the sheets 30* and 30 of the register forms. The carbon sheets are engaged beneath the spring 60 fixed to the cover 50, and are thus held down. When it is desired to bring fresh portions of the carbon sheets between sheets of the register forms, said carbon sheets are merely disengaged from the spring 60 and then pulled a sufficient distance; again engaged with the spring 60 and the used portions torn away along the bottom edge 68 of one of the side flanges 68 of the plate 66. Obviously, when the carbon sheets are being placed in position, the plate 66 may be swung upwardly to a vertical position.
Additional stacks of register forms 28 may be inserted into the compartment 21 by swinging down the door 2|. The refolded sheet 30 may be removed from the compartment 29 by swinging down the door 20.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. An autographic register comprising a case for holding Zigzagly folded register forms having openings, a writing platen on said case, and means for pulling the register forms over said writing platen, comprising a pair of pulleys, a belt over said pulleys and means on said belt, adapted to engage within the openings of said register forms, said writing platen being located in front of the belt, whereby the engaging means on said belt engage within openings in portions of the register forms which have already advanced beyond the writing platen.
2. An autographic register comprising a case for holding zigzagly folded, register: forms having openings, a writing platen on said case, 'means for pulling the register forms over said writing platen, comprising a pair of pulleys, a belt over said pulleys, means on said belt adapted to engage within' the openings of said register forms, and meansfor lifting one or more sheets of said registerforms off said pins, said writing platen being located in front of the belt whereby the engaging means on said belt engage within openings in portions of the register forms which have already advanced beyond the writing platen.
' 3. An autographic register comprising a case having register forms therein dividedinto sections of equal length, each section having an opening, all of said openings being similarly located on their respective sections, a writing table at the front of said register, means located in back of said table for pulling said forms rearwardly across-said table, said means comprising a travelling belt, means on said belt adapted to engage in said openings, and means for stopping travel of said belt after said belt has traveled the length of one section.
- 4. An autographic register comprising a case having register forms therein divided into sections of equal length, each section having an opening, all of said openings being similarly located on their respective sections, a writing table at the front of said register, means located in back of said table for pulling said forms rearwardly across said table, said means comprising a travelling belt, means on said belt adapted to engage in said openings, means for stopping travel of said belt after said belt has traveled the length of one'section, and means to release said stopping means.
5. An autographic register comprising a case having register forms therein divided into sections of equal length, each section having an opening, all of said openings being similarly located on their respective sections, a top cover for said case, the front portion of which constitutes a writing table, means pulling said forms rearwardly over said writing table, located beneath the rear of said cover and comprising a pair of pulleys with a belt thereover, a plurality of pins on said belt adapted to engage in said openings, a handle on one of said pulleys for rotating the same, said pins being spaced apart on the'belt a distance equal to the distance between the openingsof adjacent sections, and means for locking said pulley after the handle thereof is rotated through a predetermined angle, said means comprising a lever pivotally mounted on said case and having an opening therein having a spiral edge, the inner and outer ends of said spiral edge being interconnected by an edge forming a shoulder, and a member arranged to rotate with said pulley received within said opening in the lever, and having a radial portion adapted to engage said shoulder.
6. An autographic register comprising a case having a bottom wall and side walls, a cover mounted on said side walls, a frame plate hinged tosaid case and adapted to be moved into a position overlying the front portion of said cover, said plate being formed with an opening, a lever pivoted to said case and having a hook adapted to engage the rear edge of said plate, means for pulling register forms extending between said cover and plate rearwardly, said means comprising a member rotatably mounted on said'case and located beneath the rear of the cover, means for limiting the angular movement of said rotary greases member, and meanscon said lever adapted'to c0- operate with said last-namedmeans-for moving the hook portioniof said lever into engagement with said plate upon rotatingsaid rotary member.
7. An autographic register comprising a .case, means for dividing the case-into front and rear compartments, the front compartment being adapted to receive register forms comprisinga plurality of sheets having openings, a cover on said case over said compartments, the front half of said cover constituting a writing table, means for pulling said register forms out of .said front compartment and rearwardly over said table, said means comprising a belt with pins thereon located between the rear compartment and said cover and being adapted to engage the openings in the saidsheets, means for returning one; of said sheets to the rear compartment of said case as said sheets are withdrawn from the front compartment and advanced 'on the machine, and' means for lifting the other sheets off said belt and pins.
8. An autographic register comprising a case. a writing platen thereon, means to advance register forms over said platen,'said case comprising a pair of side walls, a pair of spaced rivets on one of said side walls, a container having a substantial semi-cylindrical wall and a flange extending from said wall, said flange .being formed with parallel slots to: engage said rivets,
said container being adaptedto receive a roll of carbon paper for use with the register formsirof said register.
9. In an autographic register, a writing platen at the front of the register, a belt, a pulley engaging said belt to move same, said belt and pulley being located rearwardly of said Writingplaten, means to prevent slipping between said belt and pulley, means on said belt for engaging register forms for causing pulling of the latter rearwardly over said table, and releasable means for limiting rotation of said pulley to a predetermined angle.
10. An autographic'register of the character described, comprising a case having a bottom Wall and side walls, a cover over said case resting on the side walls thereof, the front portion of said cover being inclined downwardly andconstituting a writing platen, a framing plate hinged to said case and overlying said writing platen, a lever pivoted to said case and having'a :hook portion adapted to engage said plate to retain the latter on said writing platen, a shaft on said case disposed at substantially the'middle of the latter and a pair of pulleys onsaid shaft, a second shaft on said case and located adjacent the rear of the latter, a pair of pulleys on said second shaft aligned with said first pair -of pulleys, belts interconnecting each-pairof aligned pulleys, the rear portion of said cover having a pair of slots aligned with the belts, pins on saidbelts adapted to move through said slots upon rotating said pulleys, said lever being'formed with a lever pivoted to said case and having a hook portion adapted to engage said plate to retain the latter on said writing platen, a shaft on said case disposed at substantially the middle of the latter and a pair of pulleys on said shaft, a second shaft on said case and located adjacent the rear of the latter, a pair of pulleys on said second shaft aligned with said first pair of pulleys, belts interconnecting each pair of aligned pulleys, the rear portion of said cover having a pair of slots aligned with the belts, pins on said belts adapted to move through said slots upon rotating said pulleys, said lever being formed with an opening having aspiral edge and a radial edge interconnecting the inner and outer ends of said spiral edge, and a member of said first shaft having a radial portion adapted to engage said radial edge, said cover having a'downwardly curved portion at the front thereof and a pair of spaced pins on said downwardly curved portion projecting forwardly and adapted to receive register forms therebetween.
12. An autographic register of the character described, comprising a case having a bottom wall and side walls, a cover over said case, the front portion of said cover constituting a Writing table, a framing plate hinged to the front of said case and overlying said writing table, a lever pivoted to said case and having a hook portion adapted to engage said plate adjacent the rear of the latter to retain the same on said writing table, a shaft on said case, a pair of pulleys on said shaft, a second shaft on said case and located adjacent the rear of the latter, apair of pulleys on said second shaft aligned with said first pair of pulleys, belts interconnecting each pair of aligned pulleys, the rear portion of said cover having a pair of'slots aligned with the belts, pins on said belts adapted to move through said slots upon rotating said pulleys, said lever being formed with an opening having a spiral edge and .a radial edge interconnecting the inner and outer ends of said spiral edge, a member of said first shaft having a radial portion adapted to engage said radial edge, and a pair of lugs on the underside of said plate projecting downwardly and adapted to serve as guides for register forms passing therebetween and on said writing table.
13. An autographic register of the character described, comprising a case having a bottom wall and side walls, a cover over said case, the front portion of said cover constituting a writing table,
a framing plate hinged to said case and overlying said writing table, a shaft on said case, a pair of pulleys on said shaft, a second shaft on said case, a pair of pulleys on said second shaft aligned with said first pair of pulleys, belts interconnecting each pair of aligned pulleys, the rear portion of said cover having a ,pair of slots aligned with the belts, pins on said belts adapted to move through said slots upon rotating said pulleys, a pair of spaced lugs on said plate projecting downwardly and adapted to serve as guides for register forms passing therebetween and on said writing table, said cover having openings to receive the bottom ends of said downwardly projecting lugs.
14. An autographic register of the character described, comprising a case having a bottom wall and side walls, a cover over said case resting on the side walls thereof, the front portion of said cover being inclined downwardly and constituting a writing table, a framing plate hinged to said case and overlying said writing table, a lever pivoted to said case and having a hook portion adapted to engage said plate to retain the latter on said writing table, a shaft on said case disposed at substantially the middle of the latter and a pair of pulleys on said shaft, a second shaft on said case andlocated adjacent the rear of the latter, a pair of pulleys on said second shaft aligned with said first pair of pulleys, belts interconnecting each pair of aligned pulleys, the rear portion of said cover having a pair of slots aligned with the belts, pins on said belts adapted to move through said slots upon rotating said pulleys, said lever being formed with an opening having a spiral edge and a radial edge interconnecting the inner and outer ends of said spiral edge, and a member of said first shaft having a radial portion adapted toengage said radial edge, a partition on the bottom wall of said case separating the front and rear of said case into front and rear compartments, and plates hinged to the front and rear ends of said bottom wall, and means for holding said last mentioned hinged plates in upright position to close the front and rear of the case.
15. An autographic register comprising a writing platen, means for moving over said platen, register forms divided into sections of equal length, each section having an opening, all of said openings being similarly located on their respective sections, said means comprising a pair of pulleys, a belt thereover, a plurality of pins on said belt adapted to engage in said openings, a handle on one of said pulleys for rotating the same, said pins being spaced apart on the belt a distance equal to the distance between the openings of adjacent sections, and means for locking said pulley after the handle thereon is rotated through a predetermined angle, said last means comprising a pivoted lever having an opening therein formed with a spiral edge, the inner and outer ends of said spiral edge being interconnected by an edge forming a shoulder, and a member arranged to rotate with said pulley and disposed within the opening in said lever and having a radial portion adapted to engage the first shoulder.
16. In an autographic register, a writing platen, a frame plate over said writing platen, a lever having a portion engaging an edge of the frame plate, means for pulling register forms disposed between the writing platen and the frame plate, means for limiting pulling movement of the register forms to a. predetermined distance, and means controlled by said last named means for moving the lever into engagement with the plate upon moving said register forms said predetermined distance.
17. An autographic register comprising a case, a writing platen on said case, means for pulling register forms from a zigzagly folded stack within the case, over' the platen, said means comprising a pair of pulleys with a belt thereon, means on the belt adapted to engage within openings of the register forms, and means for guiding the register forms back into the case in a zigzagly folded stack, said means comprising a pair of curved spaced guides disposed about one of said pulleys and adapted to receive one of said register forms therebetween.
