(Cl. 336-98) This invention relates to transformer construction and more particularly to a transformer of distributed core type which is provided with physical characteristics so as to permit its application in special indicating and recording instrument circuits.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a transformer construction of a shape conforming to the outside diameters of standard electrical conduits and which is adapted to pass into a conventional outlet box.
An additional object of the invention resides in the provision of a transformer which has a novel casing formed in sections so arranged with suitable friction catch means as to enable the transformer to be held in place within a knock-out opening of a conventional outlet box or the like.-
Still further objects and features of this invention reside.
in the provision of a transformer that is simple in construction, highly eflicient in operation, which employs a laminated distributed core and a sectional casing with the casing being detachably secured in position so as to allow adequate ventilation of the transformer and core yet which is sturdy and compact.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of a transformer constructed in accordance with the concepts of the present invention;
Figure 2 is an end elevational view of the transformer;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of one of the sections of the sectional casing;
Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectional view in an enlarged scale of the transformer illustrating in particular the construction of the friction catches and of the winding;
Figure 5 is a sectional view as taken along the plane of line 5-5 in Figure 4; and
Figure 6 is a perspective view in an enlarged scale of the laminated core.
With continuing reference to the accompanying drawings wherein like reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the various views, reference numeral 10 generally designates the transformer constructed in accordance with the concepts of the present invention. This transformer includes a laminated core generally indicated at 12.
The transformer 10 is of the distributed core type, that is, the core 12 includes outer legs 14, 16, 18, and 20 formed of laminated sections and includes inner legs as at 22, 24, 26 and 28 as most clearly seen in Figure 5. Positioned about the inner legs of the core and concentric with the inner legs and the outer legs of the core are the primary winding 30 and the secondary winding 32 suitably insulated.

As can be seen best in Figure 3, the casing section 38 cylindrical configuration having partial cylindrical walls 42, a partial closure wall 44 and an integrally formed strap section 46. The strap section 46 terminates in a generally triangular shaped end portion 48 having a generally hook like end 50. At the other end of the cylindrical portion 40 is an end plate 52. The end plate 52 is provided with an aperture 53 therethrough. It is noted that this end plate 52 of the casing section 38 overlaps the end plates 54, 56 and 53 of the sections 34, 36 and 40 in such a manner that a screw fastener 60 or the like can be engaged in the aperture 53 which is threaded as are apertures in the end walls 54, 56 and 58 of the other casing sections. This holds one end of each of the casing sections together and a ring fastener as at 62 may be provided for engagement with the hook-like ends 50 of each of the casing sections. The casing sections are so arranged that the hook-like ends will resiliently engage the ring fastener 62. The ring fastener may be integral with the end of the casing section Each of the strap sections as at 46 is provided with a projection 70, 72 and 74 which are arranged adjacent the cylindrical sections as at 40 of the casing section 38. The protuberances or projections 70, 72 and 74 project outwardly beyond the casing sections as at 40 and therefore form a friction catch whereby the wall of an outlet box into a knock-out opening of which the transformer has been positioned can be engaged between the projections 70, 72 and 74 and the cylindrical sections as at 40 fitting in the recesses provided therefor as at 78, and 82.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and de scribed, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A transformer comprising a laminated core having concentric primary and secondary windings thereabout, said core having a first end and a second end, a plurality of casing sections disposed about said core holding said windings in place While allowing ventilation of said windings, each of said casing sections including a first end portion of partial cylindrical shape having a strap portion appended thereto, said strap portion terminating in a generally triangular shape hook end, means securing said hook ends together adjacent said first end of said core, and means securing the first end portions of said casing sections together about said second end of said core.
2. A transformer comprising a laminated core having concentric primary and secondary windings thereabout, said core having a first end and a second end, a plurality of easing sections disposed about said core holding said windings in place while allowing ventilation of said windings, each of said casing sections including a first end portion of partial cylindrical shape having a strap portion appended thereto, said strap portion terminating in a generally triangular shape hook end, means securing said hook ends together adjacent said first end of said core, said first end portions of said casing sections being arranged in overlapping relationship, and a fastener extending through said first end portions holding said first end portions together about said second end of said core.
3. A transformer comprising a laminated core having concentric primary and secondary windings thereabout,
greases said core havin a first end and a second end, a plurality of casing sections disposed about said core holding said windings in place While allowing ventilation of said windings, each of said casing sections including a first end said first end poltions, said core having a major portion exposed, said strap portions having projections extending outwardly of said first end portions adjacent said first end portions forming friction catches.
