UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM '1. RUETE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO GENERAL ELECTRIC COM- PANY, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
CEILING BOX.
Application filed October 17, 1923. Serial No. 669,189.
The present invention relates to the electric wiring of houses and more especially to ceiling boxes whereby provision is made for outlet ofthe wire conduits and to support the electroliers or other fixtures.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved ceiling box which shall be very compact, hardy and of low manufacturing cost.
One embodiment of the invention i shown in the accompanying drawing which Fig. 1 is an under side plan view the improved box, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof on line A-A, of Fig. 1.
The box is composed of an outer or shell portion 1 and an interior portion 2 In order that the shell portion 1 may be very light and at the same time unbreakable, it is made of die formed sheet steel with in tegral bottom 3 and peripheral side wall 4. The bottom is provided with mounting screw holes 5, a center aperture 6 and four conduit holes 7 normally closed by knockout plugs S. The side Wall is provided with two pairs of tapped holes for the conduit clamping screws 9.
The interior portion 2 is made of cast or malleable iron of a length to closely engage at its ends with the inner surface of the peripheral wall 4 of the shell to which it is fixedly attached by upsets or indentations ll) formed in the lower edge of the wall 4 over notches in the lower corners at the ends of the interior portion. The interior portion 2 is provided adjacent each end with a pair of conduit receiving holes 11 aligning with the holes 7 in the shell bottom and having their lower ends contracted to provide shoulders 12 for engaging the ends of the conduit. llecesses 13 are formed in the upper end corners of the inner portion 1 to clear the pairs of clamping screws 9, which are so disposed relative to the conduit receiving holes 11 as to engage tangentially with the outer surface of the conduits. The lower side of the inne portion 2 is shown provided with a threaded nipple 14: adapted for the reception of the supporting part of an electrolicr or other fixture, but inner portions with other forms of fixture connection can be used interchangeably.
I desire it to be understood that where the word conduit is used herein, it is intended to include armored cable as well as the 1101-- low type of conduit.
lVhile I have shown and described the best form of the invention known to me, I do not desire to be restricted thereto.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. A ceil ng box comprising an inner portion provided with conduit. receiving holes with recesses extending from said holes to the ends of said portion and end notches formed in the lower side thereof, and a malleable outer portion having a bottom provided with conduit holes and a peripheral wail integral with said bottom and provided with tapped screw holes leading to the conduit holes through said recesses and having its outer edge indented into-the end notches of the inner portion.
2. A ceiling box comprising a sheet metal outer portion consisting of integral bottom and peripheral wall, an oblong cast metal inner portion provided with apertures therein for receiving and pos tioning electric conductors and with notches formed in the ends thereof, and indentations formed in the peripheral wall of the outer portion to engage the notches in the ends of the inner portion and hold the latter in fixed relation to the outer portion.
3. A ceiling box comprising a sheet metal outer portion consisting of integral bottom and peripheral side wall, said bottom having plugged conduit holes therein and said side wall having tapped screw holes therein, an oblong cast metal inner portion provided with apertures therein in alignment with the conduit holes of said outer portion and recesses extending from said apertures to the ends thereof in aiignn'ient with said screw holes, and means for securing said inner portion in fixed relation to said outer portion.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 13th day of October, 1923.
WILLIAM T. RUETE.
