Application November 1, 1945;,Serial'No. 626,040"
(01. Lin-59 1 Claim.
The present invention relates to new and useful'improvements in outlet or junction boxes and analogous fittings used insystems of electrical distribution and the invention has for its primary object to provide a device of this character which is constructed of insulation material whereby to prevent injury to persons should a short circuit occur in the wires leading to the box as well as to eliminate the possibility of rust and corrosion occurring in the material of which the box is constructed.
A further important object of the invention is to provide means for easily and quickly attaching the ends of the circuit wires extending into the box to each other without requiring the use of screws or other fastening devices.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which i efficient and reliable in use, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view.
Figure 3 i a similar view taken at right angles to Figure 2.
Figures 4 and 5 are sectional views taken respectively on the lines 4-4 and 55 of Figure 1.
Figure 6 is a plan View of the cover plate.
Figure 7 is a sectional View taken substantially on line 'l-! of Figure 6.
Figure 8 is a plan view of the upper section of the box.
Figure 9 is a sectional view taken on a line 9--9 of Figure 8.
Figure 10 is a plan View of the lower section of the box, and
Figure 11 is a sectional view taken on a line l|--Il of Figure 10.
Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates the outlet box generally which is of circular formation and including a lower or bottom section 6, a top section 1 and a cover plate 8. The lower section 6 is closed at its bottom and is secured to a wall or other sutable supporting structure 9 by means of screws or the like I 0. The upper section I and cover plate 8 are 2: secured-in assembled position on' the lower section 6 by means of screws through the coverplate and through openings l2 and 13 in the upper and lower sections for threading in the opening of the lower section.
The lower section 6 is of hollow construction and formed with radially extending ribs M which, in the present embodiment of the invention are disposed at degrees with respect to each other, or at right angles to each other as illustrated in Figure 10 of the drawings. The upper surface of the ribs M are formed with longitudinally extending grooves l5 for seating the circuit wire l6 therein, the circuit wires being inserted through openings l6a formed at the meeting edges of the upper and lower sections of the box.
A connector designated generally at H is formed with radially extending arms l8 seated in the inner ends of the grooves l5 and are provided with openings 19 in which the inner ends of the wires I6 are engaged and bent or formed with hook indicated at 20 to prevent accidental disengagement of the wires from the connector.
The connector I8 is secured at the center of thelower section 6 by means of a screw 2| threaded in a bushing 22 recessed in the bottom of the lower section 6 as more clearly shown in Figure 11 of the drawings.
The upper section 1 of the box is formed with a spider 23 including the right angularly formed radially extending arms 24 having the grooves '25 in the upper surfaces thereof, the grooves 25 communicating with the opening Ilia by means of passages 26 and in which the other side of the circuit Wires 21 are inserted for connection in the openings 28 of the conductor arms 29 in a manner similar to that heretofore described with respect to the circuit wires l6 and conductor 11.
The conductor 29 is secured at the center of the spider 23 by means of a screw 30 threaded in a bushing 3| recessed in the center of the spider.
As will be apparent from an inspection of Figure 9 of the drawings, the spider 23 of the upper section 1 overlies the ribs [4 of the lower section 6 of the box to thus separate the circuit wire it and conductor I1 from the circuit wires 2? and conductor 29 and prevent short circuiting of the wires.
After the opposite sides of the circuit wires 16 and 2? have been secured to their respective connectors l! and 29 the cover plate 8 is then secured in position by the screws H which also secure the parts in assembled relation.
In view of the foregoing description taken in H i which extend conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A junction box for electric lead lines comprising superposed bottom, intermediate and cover members, respectively, connected together in assembled relation, said bottom and intermediate members being hollow and having meeting edges provided with complemental openings therein for extension of lead lines therethrough, said bottom and intermediate members having cruciform rib structures therein with intersecting channels in the structures and the channels of each structure facing the channels in the other structure and extending to said openings whereby the leads extended through said openings are adapted to extend into said facing channels, and connectors with radial arms fitted in said structures at the intersections of the channels with the arms thereof lying in said channels for attachment of said leads thereto.
