MIRES CARDBOARD BOX Feb. 26, 1957 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed Jan. 24, 1955 A V2,782,981V l cARDBoARD Boxl Joseph Everett Mires, London, vntario, Canada, assignor to Somerville Limited, London, Ontario, Canada Applicationranuary 24, 195s, serial'No'. 483,763 e s claims. (crm-sz) This invention relates to improvements in cardboard boxes of the telescope type wherein the box is slidably nested within a lid having down turned sides of a depth approximating the depth of the box; and the purpose of the invention yis to incorporate a carrying handle within one of the sides of the box and which may be arranged to project outwardly through an orifice in the corresponding side of the lid when the handle is to be used.
A further object of the invention is to form the handle as an integral part of the side of the box, the handle being swingable about a crease line defining the joint between the handle and the side; the orifice in the side of the lid through which the handle may project being defined by a U-shaped cut which forms a tongue swingable about a crease line extending between the ends of the cut, the tongue being arranged to be swung inwardly to guide the handle through the orifice when the lid is placed upon the box with the intention of using the carrying handle.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the box that its handle containing side is detached from the other sides and swingably attached to the bottom at its lower edge, for the purpose of facilitating entry of the handle into the orifice in the side of the lid when the handle is to be used.
With the foregoing and other objects in view as shall appear, the invention consists of a box constructed and arranged all as hereinafter more particularly described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of the lid of the box, the swingable tongue in its side handle receiving orifice being shown in the inwardly pressed position.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the box and showing the handle containing side swung outwardly to a slight degree.
Figure 3 is a vertical longitudinal cross sectional view through the box with the lid thereon, the handle not being in use.
Figure 4 is a vertical longitudinal cross-sectional view showing the box partly inserted in the lid, the lid orifice tongue being in the inwardly pressed position and guiding the handle outwardly through the orifice; and
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the box with the handle in the carrying position.
Apart from the handle forming arrangement, the box structure follows standard practice and comprises a rectangular box having a bottom 2 and sides 3, and a lid portion having a. top 4 and downwardly turned sides 5 of a depth approximating the depth of the sides 3.
The side 3a of the box is free in relation to the other sides of the box and is swingably attached to the edge of the bottom 2, being defined therefrom by a crease line 6. The upper portion of the side 3a constitutes the handle '7 which is narrower than the lower portion of the side and contains a finger receiving orifice 8. A handle bending or swinging crease line 9 extends across the face of the side 3a, and as shown in Figure 2, is in alignment with the bottom edge 10 of the handle orifice 8.
The slide 5a of the lid which overlies the'sidel 3a bf f the box contains a U-shaped cut 11 defining the bottom and sides of the handle receiving orifice 12 and also a tongue 13 swingable rabout a crease line V14 extending between the ends of the cut. to receive the surface of the users thumbwhen pressing the tongue inwardly, thebottom 15 of the orifice and tongue defining -cut 11'is of concave form. The free ends 16 ofthev box sides 3 are inclined to provide a finished appearance and also to facilitate the removal of merchandise through the end of thehbox.
When the box is used for storing purposes, as for example in the case of shoe containing boxes in a shoe store, the lid is fitted upon the box in the standard fashion, as illustrated in Figure 3. If the box is to be used for carrying purposes, as for example, to provide a package for a purchaser, it is only necessary for the clerk to press the lid orifice tongue 13 inwardly to a slight degree, as shown in Figure 1, before the lid is pushed downwardly upon the box. i
As the box enters the lid, the edge of the handle 7 is deflected through the orifice 12 in its sliding contact with the face of the inwardly sloped tongue, as shown in Figure 4. Upon the box being closed the handle is swung about the crease line 9 into the box carrying position shown in Figure 5.
rlhe box is opened in the usual manner by lifting the lid, at which time the pressure contact between the edge of the orifice 12 and the outer face of the inner end of the handle causes the handle to swing inwardly and be withdrawn from the orifice as the lid is removed.
To obviate any possibility of the lower portion of the box gradually sliding open under jarring movement of the contents when the box is being carried by the handle, the lower side 5a of the lid` is formed with an inturned edge rib 17, and the lower side 3b formed with an integral locking tongue 18 positioned intermediately of the sides width and height and inclined outwardly about a crease line 19.
It will be seen upon reference to Figure 3, that when the box is closed the free end of the tongue engages the inner edge of the rib, and thus retains the lower portions of the box and lid from being jarred apart. To open the box, the handle end of the lid is first swung upwardly.
It will be appreciated that while a particular handle shape orifice arrangement and locking tongue have been shown, various changes within the scope of the invention may be made without departing from the spirit thereof, as set out in the appended claims.
I claim:
l. A box comprising a lid portion formed of a top and four downwardly extending sides to encase a bottom portion having a bottom and three upwardly extending sides of substantially the same height and a fourth side of less height than the height of the other three sides, said fourth side having a handle swingably connected to and projecting upwardly from its top edge and arranged to enter an orifice in one of the downwardly extending sides of the lid portion, the upper edge of said orifice being formed with anV inwardly and downwardly inclined handle deflecting tongue across the face of which the handle slides to enter the orifice upon the lid portion being moved downwardly to encase thev bottom box portion. f
2. A box as defined in claim l, wherein the fourth bottom side is integral with and swingably connected to the bottom by a crease line and the handle integral with and swingably connected to the top edge of said fourth bottom side by a crease line, the'h'andle defiecting tongue being integral with and swingably connected to Patented' Feb. 2,6, 1957 To provide sufficientdepth theguplper, cdgeihegprieinhe side of lthe lid portiOiLby ixsgiling,
