SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 278,265, dated May 22, 1883.

To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL R. PORTER, ot' Randolph, county of Norfolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvenient in Wrenches, ot' which the following description, in' connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings Vrepresenting like parts. My invention in wrenches has for its object l ro to simplify and cheapen the construction, and
is shown embodied in a wrench-in which one jaw, which may be called the main 7 or iixed jaw, has the otherjaw arranged to slideupon it and has the wrench-handle pivoted upon it,
the said handle being adapted to both draw the jaws together upon a nut or article to be turned and also to turn the wrench and nut grasped by it.
In my present invention the main or tixed 2o jaw has a shank portion of less thickness than thejaw itself, and the movable jaw also has a shank of less thickness, the said shanks being offset on opposite sides of the jaws, so that when the two jaws are in operative position their shanks interlock or lie one upon the other. The movable shank is provided with a slot which receives a bolt passing through it and the shank of the iixed jaw, the said bolt thus holding the two jaws together in operative position. The handle by which the jaws are closed together and the nut turned is pivoted upon the side ot' the shank of the fixed wjaw, and thus readily engages' the shank of the movable jaw.

The main or fixed jaw a has a shank, b, of less thickness, lying at one side of the middle of the jaw, as best shown in Fig. 2, the said jaw a thus forming a shoulder, 2, projecting from the said shank b. The movable jaw c also has a thinner shank, d, it lying at the other side of the middle of` the wrench and resting upon the shank b and againstthe said shoulder 2. The jaw c itself thus also forms a 5o shoulder, 3, (see Fig. 3,) which receives the shank b of the jaw a, the said shanks b and (Z thus interlocking, as it were, with the jaws a and c. The shank b ofthe fixed jaw is provided with a bolt, e, preferably having` a squared or flattened stem entering a slot, 4, in the shank d of the movable jaw, the said bolt being provided with suitable heads, nuts, or projections to engage the faces ofthe said shanks, and thus hold the two jaws in the proper relative position. The jaw c thus has a sliding 6o movement toward and from the jaw a, it being guided in the said movement by the engage` ment of the shoulders 2 3 with the corresponding shanks, and also by the bolt c in the slot 4.

When the wrench is in the position shown in Fig. 1, and the handle h, moved in the di- 7o rection ot' the arrow thereon, it will first turn on the pivot or studt as a fulcrum, and in acting upon the projection fwill move thejaw c in the direction ofthe arrow thereon toward thejaw a until the said movement is stopped by the nut or other article to be turned placed between the said jaws, after which the further movement of thehandle 71, will canse the entire wrench to rotate and turn the nut.
It will be seen that both the jaws can be So made as simple forgings, which will require scarcely any labor to iinish and tit together, thus making a much cheaper wrench than when the shank of one jaw moves through au opening or passageK in the body of the other jaw, such opening or passage having to be made after the forging is formed by a very expensive operation.
I claim- 1.A ln a wrench, the combination ofthe main 9c jaw having a shank lying at one side of the middle of the wrench with the movable jaw having a shank lying at the other side of the middle of the wrench, each of the said jaws forming a shoulder to receive and guide the shank of the other jaw, and the handle pivoted upon the side of the shank of the main jaw and operatively connected with the movable jaw, substantially as described.
2. The main jaw and its shank lying at one roo side of the middle of the Wrench, combined with the movable jaw having a slotted shank lying` at the other side of the middle of the Wrench, and the bolt upon the shank of the mainjaw passing through the slot in the shank ofthe movable jaw, and the handle pivoted on the ixed jaw and operatively connected with the movable jaw, substantially as described.
3. Thejaw ce, with its shank b, and the jaw o, With its shank d, slotted and provided with a projeetiomf, the said jaws and their shanks being interlooked, as described, combined with the bolt e and forked handle h, pivoted upon the shank b and engaging the projeotionf, all to operate substantially as described.
