Application led .august 2&'1911 Serial No. 646,345. e
To all 'whom it 'may comm: I
Be it known that l, donn Wiesmann a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at 'Glassporh in the count-y of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certaln new and vuseitul improvements 1n Wrenehes, of which the following is a speci- 'part-s, inexpensive to manufacture, and easy to assemble. v
Another object of this invention is to furnish a Wrench of the above type with a normally open adjustable jaw that will co operate with the fixed jaw or" a. wrench in positively gripping a surface.
A further object of this invent-ion is to provide a Wrench ott the above type that can be easily manipulated and advantageously used by plumbers and other artisans.
These and such other objects as may hereinafter appear are attained by a mechanical construction that will be presently described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a Wrench partly broken away and partly in section; Fig. 2' is a front elevation oi the same, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional lto View taken on the line IlI-Hl of Fig. I..
A Wrench in accordance with this initen tion comprises a handle l, having a lo igitudinal recess 2 formed therein extending from the outer end of the handle to a point in proximity to the inner end thereofv This recess (is rectangular in cross section. with one side thereof open and this :side ot the revcess is adapted to be closed by a detachable tace plate 3 that, is secured to the handle i by screws 4f or other fastening; means extending through the plate 3 into openings 5 provided therefor in the handle l.
Formed integral with the outer end. of the handle 1 is a fixed jaw 6, having a central opening,r 7 :dining with the recess of the handle, and the rear end of the jaw The jaw 6 extends from the `front and rear sides .11 shift over the head 18, 'said head represents a fiat gripping surface 8, while the forward end of the jaw has an offset 9 presenting a serrated or toothed gripping surface 10.
Slidably mounted in the opening 7 and recess 2 is a shank 11 that is rectangular in cross section, with the lower Jfront edge thereof toothed or provided with transverse teeth 12. The outer end ot the shank 11 has a jaw 13, with the rear end thereof presenting a grippingY 'surface llladapted to co operate with the surface 8 of the jaw 6 in gripping fiat surfaces or the facets of a nut. The forward end of the jaw 13 is curved, as at 15 and provided with a claw 16. The curved forward ends ot' the jaw 13 cooperate with the forward end of the jaw G in gripping a pipe.
lnterposed between the inner end of a shank 11 and the bottom of a recess 9. is a coil compression spring 16, adapted to normally maintain the shank 11 in an extended position with the jaw 13 open. To retain the jaw 13 in adjusted position, the handle 1 is provided with a slot 17, and extending into the slot is the toothed head 18 of a flat resilient locking member 19. The member 19 has the lower end thereof riveted or otherwise secured, as at, 20, in the inner end of the recess 2, and theouter end of the member is adapted to normally engage the shalllp il. head 18 has apertured lugs 21 pivotally cionneoted to a link, 22, and this link is pivotally connected, as at 23, to the outer end of a lever 24. The lever 211 is fulcrumed upon a pin 25 arranged transversely of the slot 17v The inner end of the lever is bent out-- wardly, as at 26, and interposed between the inner end o1i said lever and the handle 1 is a coil compression spring 27. The handle 1 is out away, as at 28, and pilovieled with a guide pin 29 for the spring 27, whereby said spring cannot, Abecome accidentally displaced.
lVhen the inner outwardly bent end of the lever 2T' pressed 'inwardly toward the handle l, the head 18 of the member 19 is moved out of engagement with the shank 1l, thereby allowing the spring 16 t0 mov@ the shank and open the jaw 13. After the jaws 6 and 13 have been placed over the part to be gripped, the jaw 13 can be pushed toward the object whereby both of said jaws will grip the object. The' teeth of a shank rlhe outer side of the toothed ceding until the jaw 13 has been correctly positioned; then seid jaw is looked by the member 1S' andtlie Wrench can be used for rotating the object.
The Wrench in its entirety een 1oe made of light and durable metal and of various sizes* lli/vliet l claim is:
A Wrench Comprising` a oentially'disposed longitudinal recess, ti jew integral with tli'e outer end of the liandle having ereentrally disposed opening alining the said recess, a face Vplate detacliably mounted upon tlie handle for Closing it, and having its outer end abutting against said -jaw e shank slidaoly mounted in said open ing and recess having one edge toothed, av
jaw integral with the shank opposingy the Jaw of the handle, said handle having its rontprovided with a slot opening into Said handle having' a ot' tlie shank' for maintaining tlie latter trom movement, a spring controlled lever pivotally mounted in said slotJ and normally engaging said locking member for maintuin- 11119; it in engagement with the shank, and a Coil spring interposed between the inner end otlie shank and the inner end of said recess for forcing the shank outwardly from the lmndle when the 'teeth of the lever are clear of the teeth of the shank.
In testimony whereof l adir; my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
