Description

W. B. BROWN.
WRENCH. APPLICATION I'ILED I'EB. 2 8, 1910.
962,304. Patented June 21, 1910.
WITNESSES Wi W95 UNITE STA ES WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 21, 1910.
Application filed February 28, 1910. Serial No. 546,503.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM B. BROWN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to wrenches, and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a quick acting monkey wrench wherein positive and reliable means are employed for locking the adjustable jaw thereof in a fixed position; second, to furnish a wrench with a locking device that can be easily and quickly manipulated, third, to provide a wrench consisting of comparatively few parts easily assembled and maintained in an operable condition, andfourth, to accomplish the above objects by a wrench that is simple, durable, inexpensive to manufacture and highly eflicient for the purposes for which it is intended.
I attain the above objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing forming a part of this specification, wherein there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that the structural elements thereof can be varied or changed, as to the size, shape and manner of assemblage without departing from the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing :Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly broken away and partly in section, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a portion of the wrench, Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the same, and Fig. 4: is a vertical sectional View of the wrench taken on the line XX of Fig. 1.
In the accompanying drawing the reference numeral 1 denotes a shank rectangular in cross section and having the front side thereof provided with teeth 2.
3 denotes a fixed jaw carried by the upper end of the shank 1 and having a gripping surface 4, while 5 denotes a handle detachably mounted upon the lower end of the shank 1.
6 denotes an adjustable jaw slidabl mounted upon the shank 1, said jaw being provided with a vertical opening 7 adapted to receive the shank and straps 8 adapted to embrace the shank and retain the jaw in engagement therewith. The jaw 6 is provided with an extension 9 having a gripping surface 9 adapted to cooperate with the gripping surface 4 of the fixed jaw 3 in clamping a nut or similar object, and the front side of the jaw 6 is provided with a recess 10 communicating with the opening 7 The upper wall of the recess 10 is cut away to form a pocket 11 and said jaw is provided with transverse openings 12 communicating with the sides of said pocket.
13 denotes a pawl pivotally mounted in the recess 10 by a pin 14. The lower end of the pawl 13 is provided with teeth 15 adapted to engage the teeth 2 of the shank 1, and the upper end of the pawl 13 is adapted to extend into the pocket 11, where said pawl is provided with outwardly extending arms 16 extending through the openings 12 of the jaw 6.
17 denotes a U-shaped spring arranged within the pocket 11 and having one end thereof bearing against the rear face of the pocket, while the opposite end of said spring bears against the forward face of the pawl 13, normally retaining said pawl in engagement with the shank 1.
18 denotes a filler block arranged upon the front side of the jaw 6 under the extension 9 thereof, said filler block being secured to the jaw 6 by screws or other fastening means 19 and to the extension 9 by a screw 20 or other fastening means, said filler block being cut away, as at 21 to provide clearance for the screw 20. The filler block 18 is adapted to close the forward end of the recess 10 and the pocket 11, besides closing the front side of the openings 12. This filler block permits of the pawl 13 and the spring 17 being easily assembled within the aw 6.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is
A. wrench embodying a shank having the front side thereof provided with teeth, a fixed jaw carried by the upper end of said shank, a handle carried by the lower end of said shank, a jaw adapted to slide upon said shank, straps carried by said jaw and embracing said shank, said jaw having a recess formed therein, the upper wall of said recess having a pocket formed therein, and said jaw having openings in the sides thereof communicating with said pocket, a pawl pivotally mounted in said recess and having the lower end thereof toothedto engage said to said jaw and adapted to close the front 10 toothed shank, a U-shaped spring arranged side of said recess, pocket and openings.
in said pocket and adapted to bear against. In testimony whereof I afiix my signature said pawl and normally hold said pawl in in the presence of two witnesses.
en a ement with said shank outwardly eX- ter idiing arms carried by the upper end of WV-ILLIAM BROWVN' said vpawl and adapted to extend through I WVitnesses:
