I I DECEASED.
COMBINATION-TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led September 11, 1907.
Patented April 27, 1909.
Serial No. 392,249.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that ALBERT B. SCHOFIELD, deceased, late a citizen of the United States, of whose last will and testament I, BERTHA l/V. SCHOFIELD, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Brooklyn, in the city and State of'` New York, am executrix, invented a` new and useful Improvement in Combination-Tools, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a combination tool, the object being tov provide 'a simple, convenient and effective tool for several different purposes.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the tool in side elevation, Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same showing in dotted lines one part of the tool opened as in use, Fig. 3 is a reverse side elevation, Fig. 4 shows the a plication of the tool vfor removing the'cap rom bottles, and Fig. 5 is a partial section showing the manner of seating one member of the tool within another.
' The tool is a combination can opener, cork puller and bottle cap remover. It is primarily a can opener the handle of' which is developed into shape for forming one member of a bottle ca remover and a housing for a cork screw, t e second member of the bottle'cap remover performing the double function of coperating with the end of the handle to remove the cap and with the shank of the cork screw for holding it housed` within the handle and also locking it in opened adjustment for use, the can opener itself forming at the same time the handle of the cork screw.
The can opener handle is denoted by 1. It is provided with a can opening jaw 2 which may be made of hardened steel and As the handle 1 extends away from the jaw 2, it is dished as shown at 3, to receive therein a cork screw 4. At its extreme end the handle is provided with an opening 5, the edge of the handle around the opening 5 being serrated as shown at 6 to engage a bottle cap 7.
The cork screw 4 is pivoted to the handle about midway of the length thereof, by means of a rivet or pintle 8, the handle 1 being provided with an opening 9 therethrough o posite the point where the shank of the cor; screw. is pivoted to the handle as shown in Fig. 5. A flat steel spring 10 is fastened to the handle 1, in the.present instance by means of rivets 11, 12, the said spring 10 projecting `at one end a short distance over the opening 5 to produce the cap removing jaw 13 which coacts with the serrated wall 6 of the handle to remove ca )s from bottles and at its opposite end t e spring 10 projects over the opening 9, as c early shown in Fig. 5, to form a locking spring for holding the cork screw 4 in its housed position within the handle and also for holding the cork screw in its extended position shown in dotted lines in Figs. 2 and 5, when the cork screw is opened out for use. In opening the .cork screw for use, the spring 10 will lift sufficiently to let the end of the shank ofthe cork screw swing beneath it into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5 when the spring will come against the squared end of the shank of the cork screw to hold it in operative position. The handle of the can opener thus serves not only as a handle for the can opening jaw but also as a handle for operating the corkscrew, as a housing for the cork screw and as one of the cooperating' jaws of a bottle cap remover.
What is claimed is:
A can opener having its handle developed into one jaw of a cap remover, a corkscrew housed therein and a spring attached to the handle, one end of said spring being formed into a second jaw of the cap remover and the other end of said spring serving as a locking spring for the corkscrew.
A BERTHA W. SCHOFIELD, Erecutr'll of last will and testament 0f Albert B. Schojeld, deceased. 'itnesses:
