D. P. FOSTER. Pipe-Wrench.
.No. 222,484. Patented Dec. 9, I879.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAN P. FOSTER, OF WALTHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN PlPE-WRENCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 222,484, dated December 9, 1879; application filed May 16, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
- Be it known that I, DAN P. FOSTER, of Waltham, in the county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Wrenches, of which the following is a full and exact description,
' referencebein g had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
jaw, B, slides easily through the screw-cylinder E, as in Fig. 3, with a depression near the rear end for receiving the cam on handle D.
Frame 0 slides easily over bar A and jaw B, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, making a guide for screw-cylinder E.
Handle D ispivoted to frame 0 at F, Figs. 1 and 2, and has a cam .fitting the depression K on barB, Figs. 2 and 3, for the purpose of moving jaw B forward and back independent of the other parts.
The screw-threadedcylinder E, projecting through slots L in the sides of and being guided by frame 0 and revolving aroundthe shank of. jaw B, works in the segment of screw on bar A, as shown in Fig. 2, causing all the parts to move over bar A. Spring G- throws up the handle D, when the handle is free, and causes D to draw back the jaw B in contact with frame 0, and keep it there so long as the handle D is free.
The operation of the device is as follows: After adjusting the jaws loosely to the article being grasped, by turning the screw E the handles are pressed together, which act, by means of the cam on handle D, causes the movable jaw B to slide still farther forward and gripe the article of whatever shape. This latter movement is independent in its working to the other parts of the wrench, making it a cheap and efficient double-handle wrench.
What I claim as my invention, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of bar A, having jaw M, sliding frame 0, and sliding jaw B within frame 0, the frame and the jaw being each movable independentlyof the other toward and from the jaw M, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of bar A, having jaw M, sliding frame 0, screw E, jaw B within frame 0, and handle D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of bar A, having jaw M, sliding frame 0, screw E, jaw B within frame 0, handle D, and spring Gr, substantially as set forth.
DAN P. FOSTER.
