, UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SARAH R. RAFFLE, 0E BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
CORSET-PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 278,043, dated May 22, 1883.
Application filed February .24, 1883.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, SARAH R. RAFFLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gorset-Protectors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object to providea novel protector or shield attachment for corsets or other similar articles of wearing-apparel, whereby the body of the wearer will be protected from the rough or protruding ends of the stays which may become bent, broken, or displaced while in use and work their way through the fabric or material in which they are inclosed; and my invention consists, essentially, of a suitably shaped shield, belt. or protector, which is adapted to be attached to the inner central parts of the corset, where the corset-stays are most liable to become bent or broken while in use, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically desig nated in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing, the figure represented is a perspective view of a corset provided with my improved'attachment.
In carrying out my invention the shield or protectorAis formed like a belt or band, made preferably in two parts or sections, whichare adapted to rest against each of theinner sides or wings of the corset or other like article. This shield or protector A may be of any desired shape, width, or thickness, and is composed, preferably, of a suitable elastic interior provided with a suitable covering. The front and rear ends of the two sections composing the shield or protector are provided with eyelet-holes, as shown, so that it is attached to (No model.)
the inner back portion of the corset only by means of the usual lacing-strings, which secures the two parts or sections of the corset together, and the front ends of the protector mayalso be provided with short lacing-strings to connect it together at the front. however, of the eyelet-holes, the rear part of the sections composing the protector or shield may be sewed or otherwise suitably secured to the back part of the corset, and the front ends may be provided with clasps or other suitable means of fastening. The shield or protector may also be formed in one continuous length, instead of in two parts or sections, and attached to the corset at the rear, and secured together at the front in any suitable manner.
It may be observed that the bending or breaking of the stays or other supports in a corset causes the rough or projecting ends to protrude through the lining of the same, and to chafe the flesh or tear the under-clothing of the wearer; and my present device has been produced with a view to remedy the abovementioned disadvantages, inasmuch as by itsuse the corset will last much longer, preserve its shape better, and if the stays become bent or broken will prevent them from injuring the clothing or person of the wearer.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is A corset-protector consisting of the waistbelt A, formed as shown, and secured to the SARAH R. RAFFLE.
