3 Claims. (Cl. 28-45) This invention relates to a folding reed hook, and more particularly to a reed hook adapted to be used in threading the heddles and reed of a loom with warp threads.

An object of this invention is to provide a folding reed hook which is simple in structure, durable and lasting in use and economical to manufacture.

Another object of this invention is to provide a reed book which can be collapsed so that the user thereof may easily carry the same in his pocket.

A further object of this invention is to provide a folding reed hook having novel means thereof for retaining the reed hook in extended position.

A yet further object of this invention is to provide a reed hook in which different length blades can be used to suit the requirements of the individual user.

A still further object of this invention is to provide a reed hook in which a new blade can be easily inserted to replace a blade having a damaged hook portion.

A yet further object of this invention is to provide a folding reed hook which can be quickly and efficiently moved between its operative and inoperative posit-ion.

These, together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the folding reed hook forming the subject of this invention showing the reed hook in its extended position;

Figure 2 is an exploded perspective view of the folding reed hook, showing the reed hook in folded position and with the cover member ready for application thereover;

Figure 3 is a perspective view of the blade of the folding reed hook forming the subject of this invention; and

Figure 4 is a sectional view taken substantially along the section line 4--4 of Figure 1.

Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that the improved folding reed hook forming the subject of this invention includes, a tubular member which is open at both ends and forms a handle. The ends of the tubular member 10 are slightly tapered as at 12 and the member may be formed of plastic or other suitable material.

Secured within one end of the tubular member 10 is a tapering neck portion 14 having its enlarged end received within the member 10 and its narrower end projecting therefrom. The narrower end of the member 14 is provided with a pair of longitudinally extending slots 16 extending from the narrow end thereof at diametrically opposite points. Any suitable means may be used for retaining the member 14 within the member 10 and this means may take the form of cement 18, or the like.

Slidably disposed Within the member 10 is a flat elongated blade 20. The blade 20 is enlarged at one end as at 22 and which end is adapted to be retained within the member 10 or member 14 at all times. The enlarged end 22 is provided with a notch 24 therein whereby the ends of the enlarged portion 22 will be resiliently urged into engagement with the inner walls of the member 14 when the blade 20 is withdrawn from the member 10.

The blade 20 is provided with a pair of projections 26 extending from opposite sides thereof and which are adapted to engage the outer free end of the member 14 when the blade 20 is withdrawn from the member 10. In asmuch as the slot 16 is provided in the member 14, the portions of the member 14 adjacent the slots can be resiliently urged outward by the project-ion 26 during the withdrawal of the blade 20. Further, these portions can be forced outwardly when the blade 20 is being retracted within the member 10.

The other end of the blade 20 is curved as at 28 and is provided with a hook portion 30. The hook portion 30 is adapted to engage the threads of the loom during the threading operation. When the blade 20 is withdrawn into the member 10 the curved portion 28 will be received within one of the slots 16.

When the member 20 is withdrawn in the member 10 and it is desired to carry the folding reed hook in ones pocket, a cover member comprising a sleeve 32 closed at one end may be placed over the hook portion 30 and will frictionally engage the member 10 to remain in position. A plug 34 is provided for closing the other end of the member 10 to prevent the blade 20 from being removed therefrom. When the blade 20 is moved to its extended position, the cover 32 can be placed on the handle 10 from the opposite direction thereby providing an extension for the handle.

From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since nu- I merous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claims.

What is claimed as new is as follows:

1. A folding reed hook comprising a hollow handle, a blade, means mounting said blade for longitudinal movement into and out of said handle into retracted and extended positions respectively, means on said blade adjacent one end for retaining the blade in extended position, said blade being provided with a hook portion adjacent its other end, and a cover member adapted to be positioned on said handle in overlying position to said hook portion when the blade is in retracted position in said handle, said handle being closed at one end and open at its other end, said handle having a portion thereof tapering toward said open end, said blade being formed of a flat elongated member having said hook portion integrally formed at one end thereof, the other end of said blade being enlarged and coacting with said tapering portion so as to be prevented from movement through said open end.
