(Cl. 215-38) An object of the invention is to produce a cover or lid for a container with which a printed slip is attractively combined and so located and arranged that it does not detract from the functioning of the lid as a closure, is separated from the material in the container but is made accessible by the removal of the lid from the container on which it is initially fitted.
A further object is to produce a lid or closure fora container which forms an envelope for a printed strip so combined withthe closure that it is retained therein and out of contact with the material located within the container to which the closure is initially fitted. I
A further object is to produce a container closure so arranged that a printed strip is located within the confines of the closure, is separated from the material within the container but is made readily accessible by the removal of the closure from the container to which it is fitted, and may be removed from the closure without in any way detracting from its efiectiveness as a lid 01'' cover for the container.
These and other objects are attained by means of apparatus illustrated in the drawings forming a part hereof, in which Figure 1 may be designated as an exploded view of a closure embodying the present invention, shown in association with a fragmental side elevation of one type of container.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken along the diameter of a lid or closure and illustrates'an embodiment of my invention.

The rigid member constitutes the principal element of the closure and the flange forming a part thereof-is adapted to be securedto the neck portion of a container during the operation of sealing the interior of the container by means of the closure. The gasket may be of annular form and is so located that during the sealing operation it is compressed between the lip portion of the container and the top of the closure, i. e., of the rigid member. The liner is preferably, but not necessarily, formed of transparent material, is, of such size and shape that it fits within the depending flange Patented Jan. 22, 1957 with its edges in contact with the inner face of the flange. The liner normally lies flat against the gasket and holds the folded portion of the strip in place so that it is surrounded by the. gasket. A portion of the outer face of the liner is coated with adhesive material so that the liner adheres to the lip of the container and covers the mouth of the container when the closure is moved to a closing or sealing position with relation to the container.
Referring to the drawings and particularly to Figure 1, the container 5 there illustrated, is of a type known as a screw top jar in that the neck portion thereof is provided with an integrally formed screw thread 6 adapted to be engaged by a groove 7 of screw thread form, provided in the inner face of a flange 8 formed on a relatively rigid member 9 which may be of cap-shaped form, as is shown in Figure 2. In order to seal the interior of the container, the member 9 is shown as provided with an annular gasket 10 such, for example, as a rubber gasket. The gasket is preferably of such size that it is held in place withinthe flange 8 by the frictional engagement between its outer peripheral edge and the inner face of the flange. A liner 11 may be located between the gasket 10 and the inner upper face of the portion 9 and when such a liner is employed as a part of the closure, it is preferably of such size and shape that its peripheral edge frictionally engages the inner face of the flange 8. A strip of pliable material, 1 such as paper, is included in the make-up of the. closure and, as illustrated in Figures 1 and 3, consists of an end portion 12 which may approximate a liner in size, and shape, and is adapted to be located between the inner face of the gasket 10 and the upper inner face of the member 9. The remainder of the foldable material,
as shown in Figure 3, consists of a neck portion 13 which forms a connection between the portion 12 and a striplike portion 14, which is of such size and form that when folded as illustrated in Figure 1, it is capable of lying within the space surrounded by the gasket 10.
As shown in Figure 3 the strip portion 14 is scalloped butthe scallops .are of such form that when the strip is folded along the lines of minimum width between the scallops, the scalloped portion readily fits within the space surrounded by the gasket 10. As shown in Figure 1, the end portion His-neither creased nor folded but the neck portion 13 is creased along its line of engagement with the end portion 12 and is so folded that it normally lies between the end portion 12 and the inner or upper face of the gasket 10. With such an arrangement the folded scalloped portion '14 of the strip is located Within the hollow-interior of the-gasket and, in the illustrated embodiment, is held in place relatively to the gasket, by means of a liner 15. The liner 15 may be formed of transparent material and is preferably of such size and shape that it is held in place within the flange portion 8 of the member 9 by the frictional engagement between its peripheral edge and the inner face of the flange so that it normally lies flat against the gasket 10 and holds the folded portion 14 of the strip-in place so that substantially all of it is surrounded by and is located within the confines of the gasket.
The edge portion of the, face of the liner 15 remotefrom the gasket is coated with an adhesive material which causes the gasket 15 to adhere to the lip of the container 5 whenthe closure is moved to sealing position on the container, i. e., when the gasket 10 is compressed between the top of the member 9 and the lip of the containerxf, With the container and the gasket shown in the drawings, this is accomplished by screwing the lid to place on the neck portion of the container to the point where ing the present invention may be such that it is capable of being-secured to containers other than screw top containers and that while the container illustrated is indicated as having a neck portion of substantially cylindrical form, lids or closures embodying my invention may be of a form adapted to engage .and seal containers having neck portions of difierent shapes. It will also be apparent that while the member 9 here illustrated and described is indicated as of cap-shaped form, it may be of annular form and may be employed in connection with a stiff or substantially rigid liner similar to the liner 11 illustrated and which fits within the flange portion 8 and rests against a re-entrant flange or shoulder formed integrally with the flange portion 3. That is to say, the member 9 may be formed of two parts, one of which is disk shaped and the other of which is annular and arranged to engage the disk shaped portion and to be secured to the neck portion of a container.
In Figure 2 I have shown what I now consider to be the preferred form of my invention, except as previously noted, the closure embodying my invention may be arranged to be held in sealing position on the neck portion of a container by means other than a screw connection. As illustrated in Figure 2, the closure includes a relatively rigid portion 9, which is cap-shaped and is provided with a substantially cylindrical depending flange 8. The flange is shown as provided with a groove of screw thread form adapted to engage a screw thread formed on a container such as the thread 6 of Figure l. The cap-shaped portion 9 may, if desired, be provided with a liner 11 similar in size and shape and location to the liner 11 described in connection with Figure 1. However, the liner 11 is not a necessary element of the closure. The gasket 10 is an annular gasket with its edges in frictional holding engagement with the flange 8 and so located that its inner I or upper face lies against the liner 11' if such a liner is employed, or against the inner face of the disk shaped portion of the cap 9, if the liner 11 is omitted. In Figure 2 the foldable strip of printed matter is preferably scalloped as shown in connection with the portion 14 of the strip shown in Figure 3, but, as indicated by the drawing, it need not be provided with the enlarged end portion 12 of Figure 3 nor with the neck portion '13. The portion 14 is, however, held in place as a part of the closure assembly by a liner 15' which is in all respects similar to the liner 15 described in connection with Figure 1.
In Figure 4 I have illustrated by a fragmental side elevation a container 5, such as shown in Figure 1, for the purpose of showing the liner 15 in place thereon, i. e., in the position it occupies after the cap portion of the closure is removed from the container carrying with it all parts of the closure except the liner 15 which is forced into adhering engagement with the lip of the container by the operation of initially moving the closure to sealing position on the container. In this position it closes the mouth of the container and separates the interior of the container from all the other parts of the closure.
In Figure 3 I have indicated that where the enlarged portion 12 is employed as a part of the foldable strip material, it may be of a shape indicated by the dot-dash lines 16 in Figure 3, i. e., its transverse width maybe substantially equal to the width of the widest portion of the scalloped part of the foldable strip. That is to say, the portion 12 may be so formed that the segments beyond the lines 16 are omitted. It will also be understood that while the scallop of the strip-like portion 14 contributes to locating the folded strip portion within the space surrounded by the gasket 10, scalloping such as illustrated in Figure 3 is not essential to the carrying out of my invention, although in the preferred form the folded portion is so formed that, when folded, it approximates in shape that of the central circular aperture of the gasket 10.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that various changes, modifications, additions and omissions may be l made in the apparatus illustrated without departing from the spirit and "scope of my invention as defined by the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a closure for containers, a rigid closure member having a continuous depending flange formed thereon for encircling and engaging the neck portion of a container; a ring shaped gasket fitted within said flange with the outer edge portion thereof in frictional engagement with said flange; an elongated strip of pliable material having an .end portion thereof located within the confines of said member and between the top portion thereof and said gasket, and a portion extending through the central opening of said gasket and formed and folded to fit within the space surrounded by said gasket; and a liner with the edge portion thereof removably engaging the inner face of said flange and with one face thereof lying against said gasket and confining the folded portion of said strip within the space surrounded by said gasket and treated on the outer face thereof to adhere to the lip of a container when moved into contact therewith by a sealing movement of said member.
2. In a closure for containers, a rigid closure member having a continuous depending annular flange formed thereon for encircling and engaging the neck portion of a container; a circular liner fitted within said member with the edge portion thereof in frictional engagement with the inner face of said flange throughout the extent thereof; an annular gasket fitted within said flange with the outer edge thereof in frictional engagement with said flange throughout the extent thereof; an elongated strip of pliable material having an end portion lying against said liner with at least spaced portions thereof confined between said liner and said gasket, and a portion thereof extending through the central portion of said gasket and formed and folded to fit within the space surrounded by'said gasket; and a second liner fitted within said flange with the edge thereof removably engaging the inner face of said flange and with one face thereof lying against the outer face of said gasket and confining the folded portion of said strip within the space surrounded by said gasket, said second liner having the outer face thereof treated to adhere to the lip of a container when moved into contact therewith by a sealing movement of said member.
3. In a closure for a container, a closure member having a continuous annular flange depending from the top portion thereof and adapted to encircle and engage the neck portion of a container; an annular gasket fitted within said flange with its outer peripheral edge in frictional engagement with said flange; an elongated strip of pliable material having-a portion adjacent one end thereof located within the confines of said member and in gripped en gagement between said gasket and the top portion of said member .and with an extended portion thereof free to move through the central opening of said gasket and folded to fit within the space surrounded by said gasket; a liner fitted within said flange with the edge portion thereof removably engaging the inner face of said flange and with one face thereof lying against said gasket and cover ing the central opening of said gasket and adhesive material between the outer face of said liner and the lip of the container for causing said liner to adhere to the .lip of a container when moved into contact therewith by a sealing movement of said member.
