Barking, England Application October, is, 1939, Serial No. 300,038
In Great Britain October 25, 1938 2 Clainiad (Cl. 220-42) inventionwrelates to containers made of sheet metal or moulded material and more particularly to containers inwhich it is desirable that, the lid should provide an air-tight or substantiallyair-tight seal; this is the case with,
a for-example, containers for face-cleansing pads,j ointments, scented powders and like goods'liable:
to deterioration when exposed to the air.
For the sake of appearance and additional strength the lower portion of the cylindrical wall It is known to employ for this purpose a lid whichhas a vertically-tapered, flange engaging the edge of the opening in the container proper.
,In the practical useoi such containers we have found that there is onsome occasions the possibility, of, the lid springing up? at one portion of its circumference, due presumably to the pressure of theair trapped in the container when the lid is placed in position. This may happen, for
example, if there is a local variation in the thickness of the metal as a result of which the lid is depressedmore stronglyat one point than another. Whilst thisdifliculty does not arise if the lid is positioned uniformly and firmlyit is naturally desirable to preventit from arising at all i so that the user doesnot need to take special care i in obtaining a tight, fit. For the purpose of obviating the said difficulty we shape the lower l edge of the rolled-over portion at the top of the container body so that, during theinsertion of the lid, air may escape from the body whilst nev ertheless the lid providesan'alr-tight or substantially1air-tight fit when fully inserted.
In order that the invention may be more readis shown by way ofexample.
The single figure of the drawing is a sectional llndrical wall Ill to provide aflnger-grip, by which the lid may be readily removed. The outer tapered side It. of the flange provides for. the
. greater than that of the flange, some instances the difference in resilience may-m be attained by strengthening the ,lid, e. g., by
dishing, inthe mannershown, at l3, the same result may' be obtained by using different materials or different thicknesses. For example the ily understoodreference will now be made to the accompanying drawing in which one embodiment necessary tightness of fit with the top of the conf tainer and to facilitate this result the upper edge 1 of the cylindrical wall ll! of the container is rolled over inwardly as shown at H. With this construction thereis no difficulty in removing the lid notwithstandingthe tapering of the flange l4, and
its tight engagement with the rolled edge ll since I the finger grip I5 permits ready removal of the Il) may be formed with a bead l8. Inthe preferred form-the lid and the container are each produced from a single piece of sheet metal by appropriate drawing and/or stamping operations. Inorder to improve the tightness of fit between the lid and the container the edge I! ofthe cylindrical wall 10 is tapered andis made more resilient than thelid so that it gives to some extent when the lid is inserted. Theinitial taper angle of the said edge is. preferably slightly Although in body of the container may be made of aluminium andthe lid of tinplate.
As shown it is preferable that'the depthof the finger grip l5 besuch that the bight formedbetween it and the side l6 .off the flange I4 abuts against the top of the rolled edge I1 of the container to limit ,the extent, to whichflthe lid may be insertedu f e It will be observed that the portion Il isshaped to avoid springing up of, the lid at one portion of. its circumference due totrapping of the air, in thecontainer when the lid is placed in position, whether or not the user takescare toposition thelid uniformly and firmly. For this purpose the lower edge of-theportion I1 is provided with notches cr perforations. I In the form shown the notches are in the forrn of serrations of shallow saw-tooth form. There may, conveniently be eight teeth 29 jointly extending over the periphery. During the initial portion of the operation We claim:
1. A container comprising in combination a body having an opening defined by a rolled-down edge and a lid having atapered flange engaging said edge and a finger-grip, said edge and flange providing resilient coacting sealing surfaces and said edge being notched at its periphery to form pasages for escape of 'airfrom thebody only during the insertionofthe lid, and the angleof taper of said flangebeing such that upon applicatlon of the lid th initial contactbetween the opposing faces of said flange and rolled-down edge occurs along a line intersecting said passages.
2. A container comprising in combination a body having an opening defined by a rolled-down edge and a lid having a tapered flange engaging said edge and a finger-grip, said edge and flange providing resilient coacting sealing surfaces and said edge being serrated at its peripheryto form
