N. 1.. SOLOMON 2,772,434
SHAMPOO BRUSH WITH DETACHABLEI HANDLE] Filed Feb. 7, 1955 i T 2 I4 16 INVENTOR. NATHAN LSOLOMON BY M ATTORNEY United States Patent SHAMPOO BRUSH WITH DETACHABLE HANDLE Nathan L. Solomon, Englewood, N. J.
Application February 7, 1955, Serial No. 486,543
3 Claims. (Cl. 15-176) This invention relates to a handle for detachable mounting in connection with a shampoo brush to convert the brush to diiferent uses. More particularly, the invention deals with a handle having means for quickly and easily coupling the same with the brush in conversion of the brush body into a handled brush body.
The novel features of the invention will be best understood from the following description, when taken together with the accompanying drawing, in which certain embodiments of the invention are disclosed and, in which, the separate parts are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views and, in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a shampoo brush showing one of my improved handles mounted thereon; and
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. l, with part of the construction shown in elevation.
In the drawing, represents a known hand shampoo brush, comprising an octagonal slightly rounded body portion 11, having, centrally of the upper surface thereof, an extending flexible finger ring or loop 12. Extending downwardly from the lower surface of the body portion 11 are a multiplicity of teeth or bristles 13, preferably so arranged as to form a rounded contour to fit the scalp. The brush 10 is made of moulded plastic material, so that the teeth or bristles become highly flexible with a reasonable amount of flexibility or springiness to the body portion 11, as well as free flexibility of the finger ring, loop or strap 12.
At 14 I have shown one of my improved handle members, preferably formed from moulded plastics and having a brush engaging or mounting yoke end 15 and a handle portion 16. The yoke end 15 is long and sufficiently narrow to freely but snugly pass through the loop, ring or strap 12, as clearly indicated in Fig. l of the drawing, in the operation of bringing one hookshaped flange end 17 in engagement with the body 11 along one of the flat sides of the octagonal body, as clearly indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The yoke end 15 has, adjacent the handle member 16, another hookshaped flange 18 engaging an opposed straight side of the body 11. The flanges 17 and 18 extend the full width of the yoke end 15 and are parallel to each other to engage the opposed straight sides of the body 11. It will also be apparent from a consideration of Fig. 1 of the drawing that the brush mounting or yoke end 15 of the handle member 14 is preferably of one width throughout its length for free passage through the ring 12. However, the handgrip portion of the handle member is preferably shaped to provide a comfortable grip by the hand.
The undersurface 19 of the yoke end 15 is curved to substantially conform with the curvature of the body 11. However, in coupling the handle member 14 with the brush head 10, the body 11 is flexed, particularly in engaging the hook-shaped flange end 17 with the square side of the body 11. In this operation, it will also be apparent that the yoke end of the handle member is also free to flex in accompanying this engagement.
When the handle member is coupled with the brush head, the brush head will be snugly held between the two hook- shaped flanges 17, 18; whereas, the finger ring or loop 12 retains the brush head 10 against transverse displacement from the yoke end; thus, it will be apparent that the brush can be vigorously used while being supported in the hand with the hand grasping the handle member 16 of the resulting brush combination.
From the foregoing, it will be understood that the brush combination disclosed may be merchandised in a single package with the brush and handle member at tached or with these parts detached and later assembled by the user. From time to time, the brush head 14) may be detached with respect to the handle member and used in the normal manner and, then, reassembled with the handle member 14 for other and extended uses.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a brush, comprising a body portion having projecting bristles on one surface thereof and a flexible ring centrally on the other surface thereof, said body portion of the brush being octagonal in form providing opposed straight sides on said body, a handle member for detachable mounting upon the body portion of the brush, said handle member having a flexible yoke end mounted in and snugly engaging said ring, said end including inwardly directed hook flanges engaging two opposed sides of said body which are parallel to said ring in retaining the brush against displacement from said yoke end, and said handle member including an extending handgrip portion.
2. The combination with a brush, comprising a body portion having projecting bristles on one surface thereof and a flexible ring centrally on the other surface thereof, said body portion of the brush being octagonal in form providing opposed straight sides on said body, a handle member for detachable mounting upon the body portion of the brush, said handle member having a flexible yoke end mounted in and snugly engaging said ring, said end including inwardly directed hook flanges engaging two opposed sides of said body which are parallel to said ring in retaining the brush against displacement from said yoke end, said handle member including an extending handgrip portion, and the inner surface of said yoke end being curved between said hook flanges.
3. The combination with a brush, comprising a body portion having projecting bristles on one surface thereof and a flexible ring centrally on the other surface thereof, said body portion of the brush being octagonal in form providing opposed straight sides on said body, a handle member for detachable mounting upon the body portion of the brush, said handle member having a flexible yoke end mounted in and snugly engaging said ring, said end including inwardly directed hook flanges engaging two opposed sides of said body which are parallel to said ring in retaining the brush against displacement from said yoke end, said handle member including an extending handgrip portion, the width of said yoke end being substantially equal to the length of said opposed sides of the brush body, and said flanges extending the full width of said yoke end.
