This invention relates to dust pan construction, the primary object of the invention being to provide a dust pan which is so constructed that it may be readily and easily clipped onto a broom in such a way as to encase one section of the head, to brace the broom straws of the broom head preventing uneven wear of the broom, and protect the broom ties against undue strain caused by the sweeping operation.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts, herein after more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.

Referring to the drawing:

Figure 1 is an elevational view illustrating a broom equipped with a dust pan, constructed in accordance with the invention.

Figure 2 is a side elevational view thereof.

Figure 3 is a perspective view of the combined dust pan and broom brace.

Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on line 44 of Figure 2.

Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 indicates the handle of a broom, and the reference character 6 indicates the broom head which is constructed in the usual and wellknown manner, comprising broom straws tied together by means of the broom ties I.

The dust pan is preferably pressed from sheet metal material to the desired form, so that the body portion of the pan will conform to the shape of the broom head with which it is used, so that when the broom is being used for sweeping, the dust pan will brace the broom straws at a point below the strings 1 thereof to insure against the straws breaking, and the straws wearing unevenly, due to pressure directed to the broom straws while sweeping.

The dust pan is indicated generally by the reference character 8 and comprises marginal flanges 9 that rise therefrom, the flanges being formed with inwardly extended ears l6, that fit over the outer surface of the broom head, in a manner as shown by Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing. Because of the construction of the dust pan, it will be obvious that the broom head will be tightly gripped between the ears In and bottom H of the dust pan, bracing the straws to return them to their normal positions after sweeping.

The reference character 12 indicates the handle of the dust pan, the handle being semi-tubular so that it will conform to the contour of the handle 5 and closely fit therearound. At the junction between the main portion of the dust and the handle 12, is a spring clip I3 which is so constructed that the free ends thereof contact with the inner surface of the handle l2, the arms 5 3 of the clip being curved inwardly at points adjacent to the free ends thereof so that when the clip is positioned over the handle 5 of the broom, the curved portions will be flexed, and since the outer ends of the arms I4 bear against the inner surface of the handle l2, the arms will be tensioned to securely grip the handle 5 of the broom and. hold the dust pan in position where it will brace the broom head.

While the clip will securely hold the dust pan to the broom, it will be seen that the dust pan may be readily removed by pulling the handle portion outwardly, and the dust pan used to pick up material which may be swept into the dust pan by the broom.

What is claimed is:

A dust pan comprising a body portion formed to fit over the head of a broom, said body portion including outwardly extended marginal flanges, inwardly extended ears formed on the marginal flanges, said ears being disposed adjacent to the outer end of the body portion overlying one side of a broom over which the dust pan is positioned, a semi-tubular handle formed integral with the body portion and embodying outwardly curved flanges fitted against the handle of the broom with which the dust pan is used, and a spring clip secured within the handle of the dust pan at a point where the semi-tubular handle merges into the body portion and spaced a substantial distance from the free end of the semi-tubular handle, said clip gripping the handle of the broom to which the dust pan is secured.
