This'invention relates to improvements in abrasivecleaning devices suitable for scraping pots, pans and other utensils, and for other surface scraping operations.

This invention has for its principal object to provide a novel cleaning device comprising metallic material suitably wrought into a symmetrical body and secured to a hand grip orV knob by which the same may be grasped and manipulated, and provided with a more or less flexible shield or skirt interposed between the hand grip or knob and the abrasive body so as to overlie the latter, and upon which the fingers of the user may be applied to exert pressure upon the abrasive body when rubbing the same upon and over a surface to be cleaned; said shield or skirt serving to protect the users fingers both from harsh and unpleasant contact with the abrasive body as well as from contact with soiling and staining material or fluidsy produced during use of the device.

Another object of this invention is to pro-` vide, in the device constituted as above outlined, a shield orskirt the material of which, while possessing the requisite degree of toughness or durability, imperviousness to moisture, and flexibility, is also transparent, whereby the user may have full View of the abrasive body during manipulation and use thereof, so as to be enabled to effectively pre-ss upon desired parts of the same while guiding i its movements in use; such transparent shield or skirt having the additional commercial advantage that it does not conceal the character and form of the abrasive body from the View of prospective purchasers, but permits full display of the make-up and form of the device without necessity for undue handling.

With these objects in view, I have provided the overlying shield or skirt in a form adapted to be preferably produced from transparent flexible sheet material, such as pyroxylin, cellophane, glass cloth or the like.

Other objects of this invention, not at this time more particularly enumerated, will become apparent from the following detailed description of the same.

vention is shown in the accompanying drawinof, in which l.l"ig. 1 is a top plan view -of a scouring device made according to the principles of the present invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; and Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section thereof.

Similar characters of reference are employed in the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.

Referring to the drawing, the metallic 1naterial of which the abrasive body of the scouring device is preferably made, comprises a wire which is turned or twisted upon itself to provide a roughly spirally convolved strand a, or otherwise deformed to provide a multiplicity of scraping projections or points along its length. Preferably rthe wire is of flat ribbon-like form or of angular crosssectional shape, although wire of any cross sectional shape, round or angular, may be employed. The Hat ribbon-like wire, when spirally convolved, provides a multiplicity of chisel-like scraping edges or projections calculated to provide efficient abrading effect. Preferably the metallic material is convolved or gimped upon and around a carrier core b of metallic wire or textile cord. It is also preferable that the metallic material be of a non-corrosive character, such e. g. as copper. The metallic material may be wrought into a mass to form the abrasive body of desired shape. For example, the

strand of metallic material may be looped back and forth upon itself and suitably secured to provide a bunched mass of more or less symmetrical round shape, generally indicated in the drawing by the reference character 5.

The reference character 6 indicates a hand grip or knob to which the abrasive body 5 is secured, whereby the latter is provided with means for grasping and manipulating the same. The hand grip or knob v6 may be made of wood, or of a suitable molded plastic material, and may be given any suitable contour and outline shape.v The base or bottom end 7 of the hand grip or knob is provided with a countersunk seat 8 to reecive the central portion of the abrasive mass 5, which is embraced by'a staple 9 or other suitable fastening means capable of being driven into or otherwise fixed in the body of the hand grip or knob, whereby the abrasive body and hand 5 grip or knob are securely attached together. Interposed between the abrasive body 5 and the base or bottom end 7 of the hand grip or knob, is a shield or skirt 10, preferably made y of pyroxylin or cellophane, the outer por- 10 tions of which are adapted to extend beyond the hand grip or knob, so as to overlie the upper side of the exposed parts of the abrasive body 5. Said shield or skirt l0 is provided with a central opening 1l of a diameter less than fthe diameter of the base or bottom end 7 of the hand grip or knob and yet suficiently large to permit the central portion or core of the abrasive body, where secured by the staple 9, to extend therethrough into seated Contact with seat 8 of said hand grip or knob. By this arrangement the central portion or core of the abrasive body acts as a keeper, to retain the shield or skirt against lateral play or displacement, while at the same timethe inner marginal portion 12 of the latter is pressed by the underlying abrasive body upwardly into the seat 8 of the hand grip or knob, so as to somewhat snub the same around the peripheral margin 13 of the base or bottom end thereof, thus both securing the shield or skirt 10 against upward displacement relative to the abrasive body and hand grip or knob, while at the same time acting to further obstruct any lateral shifting or displacement of the shield or skirt relative to its operative assembled relation with these parts.

I claim :w l. An abrasive scouring device, comprising a metallic abrasive body, a hand grip therefor, fastening means for securing the central core of said abrasive body to the lower end of said hand grip, and a shield of more or less flexible sheet material interposed between said abrasive body and hand grip to overlie outwardly extending portions of the former, said shield having a central opening of less diameter than the lower end of the hand grip whereby the secured central core of said abrasive body may extend therethrough to thus retain the shield against lateral displacement from its assembled relation to and betweenV said abrasive body and hand grip.

2. An abrasive scouring device, comprising a metallic abrasive body, a hand grip having a countersunk seat in its lower end to receive the central portion of said abrasive body, fastening means for securing said central portion to said hand grip, and a shield of flexible sheet material provided with a central opening having marginal portions enngaged betweensaid abrasive body and said hand grip so as to be bent over the peripheral margin of the latter and thus secured against lateral shifting, and with the outer portions of the shield overlying thel outwardly extending parts of said abrasive body. V

3. An abrasive scouring device, comprising a fabricated metallic abrasive body, a hand grip for application to the central part of said abrasive body, said hand grip having a countersunk seat in its lower end, a shield of flexible material having its central portion disposed between said hand grip and abrasive body with its outer portions overlying and substantially coextensive with the outwardly extending parts of the latter, and fastening means extending upwardly through said abrasive body and shield into said hand grip to secure the parts together and to wedge the central portions of said abrasive body and shield into said seat whereby these parts are prevented from shifting laterally in relation to each other and relative to said hand grip.
