Description

'Z0/4 'l5 -BY W Y Sept. 24, '1946. E L, HO'LLENBECK 2,408,142
Filed Sept. 24, 1945 Patented Sept. 24, 1946 00MB l y Ernest L. Honenbeck, Glendale, Calif. Application September 24, 1945, Serial No. 618,211
The primary object of my invention is to provide a comb having two relatively disposed parallel rows of teeth in staggered relation to each other, and equally adapted to both right and left handed persons. Y f
A further object is'to provide a comb which in its combing effect offers every advantage of a fine toothed comb, yet more readily providing a free and easier passage of the teeth through the khair and without the customary tooth breakage more v or less common with ne toothed combs.
A further object isl to provide a comb with'its teeth disposed so that the strands of hair separated by the rst row of teeth' in contact therewith will be simultaneously acted upon by the teeth of the second row, and whereby unison of the combing action is obtained in a more highly flexing manner as the teeth weave through the hair, and this, regardless of the number of comb strokes employed.
A still further object is the provision of a comb of said characteristics which may be cut, stamped, molded or otherwise produced, and from any suitable material readily lending itself to the production of combs.
And a further object is the provision of a comb presenting a novel combination and arrangement of the toothed sections to facilitate the removal of foreign matter in the process of cleansing the same, and whereby the respective parallel rows of teeth may be separately handled in the cleansing process, yet remain rmly fixed in attached relation with one another.
I attain these objects with the comb illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the comb in closed position;
Figure 2 is an elevation similar to Fig. 1 but with the comb in open position;
Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Figure 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Fig. 1, and
Figure 5 is a View of the toothed edge of the comb in the closed position.
Similar letters and numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views. Thus the comb is designated in general as I0. It is provided with the conventional comb h'andle II which is integrally formed with a comb-back I2 provided with a plurality of teeth I3 which Y are herein termed course as opposed to the term applied to a ne tooth comb.
'I'he longitudinal axis of the back I 2 is offset so that the longitudinal axis of the handle II lies along the side of the backV I2 thereby providing space for another comb-back I4 having its longi- Va claims. (c1. 13a-'11) z tudinal axis oifset so that the longitudinal axis 'of the-'handle II liesk along theside of the back I4 or in other the back I2 and the'back I4. The back I4 is also provided with a plurality of teeth I5 of the same degree of coarseness as the teeth I3. The back I4 is not provided with' a handle integral therewith but is connected by a rivet I6 to lthe back I2 in a manner hereinafter described which permits teeth I3 and teeth I5 to be used as one comb by grasping the handle I I.
The rivet I6 also acts as a pivot permitting the teeth I5 'carried by the back I4' to be turned `away from the teeth' I3 carried by the back I2 for-the purpose of cleaning said teeth. See Fig. 2.
A channel shaped clip I'I is secured by a rivet I8 to the handle II adjacent the junction of the handle II and the back I2. One end of the clip Il overlies the back I2 with one side of the clip imbedded in a depression I9 provided inthe back I2 andthe other side of the clipl Il spaced from the back I2 to permit th'e entrance of one end of the back I4 when said back is pivoted about the rivet I 6 to the closed position of the comb I0 as seen in Fig. 1.
A depression 20 is provided in the end of the clip I 'I which is also embedded in a depression 2| provided in the handle II so that the outside of the clip I1 is flush with the outside of the handle II and the outside of both backs I2 and I4. The clip I1 also provides added and desirable strength, support and stillness for the comb assembly at this junction.
A boss or projection 22 is provided on the back I2 on the side adjacent the side of the back I4 and approximately midway between the rivet I6 and the clip Il. The boss 22 is designed to seat in a cavity or depression 23 provided on the side of the back I4 Whenever the end of the back I4 is moved beneath the clip I'I thereby snap locking the comb I0 in the closed position of Fig. 1 due to the resiliency of the comb material and the tension provided by the snap locking means aforesaid.
It will be noted in Fig. 1 and more especially in Fig. 5 that when the comb IIJ is inthe closed or combing position the teeth I3 are in staggered relationship to the teeth I5 so that a brushing action as well as a combing action is practicable. Note separation of hairs indicated at H as comb I0 is moved to the left as seen in Fig. 5. There is thus provided a coarse toothed comb functioning as a ne toothed comb, and oiering every advantage of the latter without its common draw UNITED STATES PATENT voFlirc'zl's.y f
words between opposing sides of backs, the breaking of teeth, for example, coupled with the difliculty in pulling the comb through snarled and otherwise heavy hair. The staggered tooth arrangement in the specific manner of the placement moreover serves to unsnarl flexing and weaving action of the brushing effect experienced as the comb passes through the hair, however light or heavy that may be.
Readily produced from materials obtainable in the open market, and at no great cost, the invention offers a simple embodiment of a dual row of teeth pivotally engaged to one weight, and requiring no special consideration in its use from that employed in using a combof the common single toothed row variety. Moreover, the double row of coarse teeth in preference to ne teeth completely eliminates the customary breakage of teeth inherent in a iine toothed comb during the cleaning process.
To clean the comb, the pivoted back section is swung clear of the main or stationary section, whereupon either or both comb sections may be readily cleaned as is the ordinary single section comb.
As numerous diierent embodiments and changes in construction, style and shape of this invention could readily be made without departing from the scope thereof as herein shown and described, it is intended that the description and drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What I do claim, however, as new and novel and ldesire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a comb, two parallel disposed back sections provided with separate rows of teeth, one of said back sections in pivoted engagement with the other of said back sections, a securing member juxtapositioned in secured relation with said last named back section for embracing and holding said pivotally engaging back section in combing relation with the other said back section, said the hair due to the of the teeth as shown,'
another; light in pivotally aixed back section having a depression formed therein, and said lfirst named back section having a projection outstanding therefrom and integrally therewith arranged to slidably move over and in contact with the other back section and then enter said depression, and providing a snap locking means for securing said pivotally afxed back section against involuntary dislodgement from said securing means.
2. In a comb, a longitudinal stationary toothed back section having a handle and an outstanding projection thereon, and a second longitudinal toothed back section having a depression therein and pivotally attached to said stationary toothed back section, said outstanding projection and said depression forming a locking means between said back sections when said pivotally attached back section is brought in alignment with said stationary back section, said projection and said depression being located between the pivotal connection of said sections and the handle.
3. In a comb, a main comb member having a back, teeth .on said back and a handle extending from said back, a second comb member having a back and teeth on said back, means -pivotally connecting said backs at points intermediate the ends thereof whereby said second comb member may be swung into and out of position lying against one side of said main member with the teeth of said members presented in parallel rows for a joint combing action, a projection on the back of one of said members adapted to engage the back of the other of said members when said members are in side by side position and operating to flex said members, said other member having a depression therein in which said projection extends to hold said comb members in said side by side relation; and a keeper member on said main comb member arranged to embrace the back of the second member to hold it in combing relation'to the main comb member.
