I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES J BAILEY, OF NEIVTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
BATH-BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 405,295, dated June 18, 1889.
Application filed October 8, 1887. Serial No.25l,335. (No model.) Patented in England October 27, 1887, No. 14,620 5 in France October 27, 1887, ITO-186,625; in Canada November 3, 1887, No. 27,929, and in Belgium June 6,1888,N0.820,074.
To all whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES J. BAILEY, of Newton, in the county of MiddleseX, Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Bath-Brushes, (Patented in England, No. 14,620, October 27, 1887; France, No. 186,625, October 27, 1887; Canada, No. 27,929, November 3, 1887, and Belgium, No. 820,074, June 6, 1888,) of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object to provide a bath-brush,the back and teeth of which are made of soft rubber, with two handles, one or both of which may be detachable, whereby the brush may be manipulated with one hand for ordinary bathing or toilet purposes, or may be manipulated with both hands when desired to rub, bathe, or brush the back of a person Figure 1 shows in top view a' bath or toilet brush embodying this invention, the short looplike handle being shown] Fig. 2 is a section taken on the dotted line :10, Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a similar cross-section of the brush, showing the long strap in position, but broken off at its ends.
The back or body t' (see Fig. 1) and the teeth 2" are herein shown as made of soft rubber, preferably in a single piece, by molding. The back 4; is slotted transversely to receive a short strap 1 the ends of which are brought together above the back and connected by a detachable fastening'i herein shown as a fastening having a head and two shanks, the latter passing through holes in the ends of the strap and thereafter overturned. The ends of the strap being thus connected, a loop is formed to receive the hand of the user to manipulate the brush by one hand.
Then it is desired to employ the brush about the back and shoulders of the user, both hands are employed, a long strap 2' being used, leading from the brush at each side. In connecting the long strap '5 the ends of the shortstrap 2' are disconnected and said strap 2' is drawn through the slot, so that at one side of the back i only the end of the strap protrudes, as shown in Fig. 3, while atthe opposite 'side of the back the end of the said strap 2' is turned under, loop-like, and the strap 2' is then placed upon the top of the backi and connected at each side of the brush with the strap 2' by detachable fastenings i.
The strap 2' may be made of any desired length.
Theends of the strap 2' are grasped by the hands of the user in usual manner.
I do not desire to confine myself to the precise construction and method of attachment herein shown.
I claim- 1. The brush having the loop-like handle 2' extended through it, combined with the strap 2' connected to the said handle at each side of the brush-back, substantially as de scribed.
2. The brush having the back 2' and teeth e", made of soft rubber, the said back having a slot or pocket through it for the reception of the loop-like handle 2' combined with the strap i detachably connected to the said handle at each side of the brush, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed m y name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES J BAILEY.
