FOLDING BEDSTEAD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,859, dated May 1, 1883.

To all whom tt may concern.-

Be it known that I, JAMES M. MONTGOMERY, Jr., of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Bedsteads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved folding bedstead closed. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a simi- 5, and 6 are perspective detail views.

My invention has relation to folding bedsteads; and it consists in theimproved construction and combination of parts of a bedinto a casing and covered by a curtain, cansin g it to resemble a book-case or similar article of furniture, while the bottom of the bedframe may be open,allowing perfect and free ventilation in the bed, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates a casing, consisting of a back piece, B, which, in connection with the side pieces 0, support a top piece, D, which may be ornamented in 'any desired manner to resemble the top of whatever article of furniture the bedstead is intended to resemble, while the side pieces likewise may be paneled and ornamented in any desired manner.

The lower portions E of the side pieces are wider up to the height to which it is desired to have the bed hinged than the upper portions, and are connected .at their front edges by a board or front piece, F, preferably ornamented to resemble the front of one or more drawers, upon the upper edge of which is hinged a board, G, which may be swung ob-. liquely inward when the bed is closed, securing the lower end of the curtain H, the roller I of which is journaled in the forward portion of the top piece, and covering the swinging support of the bed-frame.

frame, J, the foot board K of which is turned slightlyinward at its lower portion to allow free space for the curtain-roller and curtain.

Two transverse boards, L and M-one at the foot end and one at the head end of the bedserve as supports for a bed-bottom, and a board, N, having legs 0 at its lower edge, is hinged to the board L at the foot end, swinging down when the bed is lowered, supporting that end, while they will depend flat against the bottom of the bed when it is raised.

A board, P, is hinged at the bottom of the casing, near the front, upon two trnnnious, Q, projecting laterally from the lower corners of the board upon which they are fastened, and resting in bearings R in the bottom of the casing, as shown in detail in Figs. 4 and 5, and the ends of the board rest, when the bed is folded down, upon the inclined edges of two supports, S, fastened upon the side pieces.

Two upward and slightly rearwardiy proiecting castings or arms, T, forming a recess, U, at their lower ends, which clasps the upper edge of the swinging board, are fastened upon the same, and their upper rounded endsVfit into correspondiugly-shaped recesses, W, formed by the curved inwardly-projecting flanges X of two castings Y, whichare fastened upon the side rails of the bed-frame, and to a crosspiece, Z, in the bottom of the same. The two sides of these recesses correspond in shape to the two sides of the arms T in such a manner that the inner side of the upper or outer portion of the flange bears against the outer side of arm T when the bed is folded down, while when the bed is closed the inner portion of the flange bears against the inner side of the arm, thus presenting a larger bearing-surface when the bed is in its two positions.

Two cross-supports, a, are secured to the inner sides of the side pieces at the height of the upper edge of the bed-frame, and serve to prevent the latter from being tilted too far down, the upper edges of the frame near the head end bearingagainstthem, and two guides, I), having curved edges, and fastened in the lower rear corner of the frame, serve to guide the head end of the bedinto position when the bed is folded.

It will be seen that, by hinging the bedframe in this manner upon a swinging board and upon the upward and rearward] y projecting arms by the flanged castings, I divide the weight of the bed over the arms, the swinging board, and the'inclined supports S, when the bed is folded down, while when the bed is folded up in the casingthe head end will rest upon the bottom of the casing, while the swinging board will stand in a vertical position, holding the bed into the casing by its rearward-projecting arms.

When the bed is folded up the curtain is drawn down, covering the front, and held down by the inclined board G, which is swung up in position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, covering the swinging board and that portion of the bed from view.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. In a folding bedstead, the combination of the bed, having castings Y secured upon the side rails and having inwardly-projecting curved flanges X, with the swinging supporting-board P, having upward and rearwardly projecting arms T, projecting into the recesses formed by flanges X, said board being hinged in the bottom of the upright casing of the bedstead, as and for the purpose shown and set forth. 4. A folding bedstead, open at the front for the reception of the swinging bed-frame, and having a rolling curtain journaled in the forward portion of the top piece, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.

5. The folding bedstead consisting of the casing A,open at the front, and havinga roller, 1, provided with a curtain, H,journaled in the forward portion of the top piece D, and swinging bed-frame J, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
