UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ROBERT DUGAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
UMBRELLA-FIXTURE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 276,788, dated May 1, 1883. Application filed August 5, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT DUGAN, ot' the city, county, and State ot' New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Umbrella-Fixtures, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had tothe accom pan yin g drawings, forming a partof this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate 1o corresponding parts in all the iigures.
Figure l is a sectional elevation of my improvement, the cover being removed. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the upper part of the upper or stationary runner. Fig.3 is a plan view i5 ofthe lower part of the same. Fig. 4 is a bottom view of the upper part of the lower runner. Fig. 5 is a plan view ofthe lower part ofthe same. Fig. Gis a side elevation or" the upper runner. Fig. 7 is a side elevation ofthe 2o lower runner.
The object ot' thisl invention is to promote the durability ot' umbrella-fixtures. The invention consists in the lower runner, formed ot' the recessed and slotted ring, hav- V ing a screw-thread in its inner surface, and the ,lower part having a flange around it, near its Lipper end, and a screw-thread around its upper end to adapt it to receive and hold the inner ends ot' the braces; and also in the combination, with the parts of the lower runner, of
braces having balls upon their inner ends, whereby the said braces will be securely hinged to the said lower runner, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A indicates the stick, B the ribs, and O the braces, ot' an umbrella.
The upper or stationary runner is made in two parts, D E The upper part, D, consists ofa sleeve having a flange, F, formed around its lower end. The ilange F has as many reeesses G formed in its lower face as it is designed to use ribs B in the umbrella, to receive balls H, formed upon the inner ends of the said ribs B. The outer end of the flange F is slotted directly opposite each recess G to receive the ribs B. The lower end of the part D is rabbeted, and upon the shoulder of the to be directly opposite the recesses G ot" the iiange F when the two parts D E are screwed together to receive the ribs B when the umbrella is closed.
The lower runner is made in 'two parts, K L. The upper part, K, consists of a ring having recesses M in its lower side to receive balls ,formed upon the inner ends ot' the braces C. The ring K has slots O formed in it opposite the recesses M to receive the braces C when the umbrella is closed. The ring K has a screw-thread formed in its inner surface to fit into ascrew-thread formed upon the upper end of the lower part, L. The lower part, L consists of a sleeve having a flange, P, formed inner ends of the braces C in place in the recesses of the upper part, K.
With this construction the ribs B and braces (l are securely held in the recesses otl the twopart runners with great freedom of movement at the joints, which are cheap and more substantial, and less liable to injury by corrosion than the common joints, making the umbrella more durable in use.
Havingthus described myinventioml claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent- The ring K, having the recesses M on its lower side, theslots O opposite said recesses, and a thread on the inside, in combination with a sliding sleeve, L, having an external thread at upper end, and the ange P at right angles thereto, said flange forming a seat for the ring and a cap for the braces,as shown and described.
ROBERT DUGAN.
