To all lwhom it may concern:

Be it known that LCHARLES B. POST, a citizen of the United States, and resident oi' New London, county of Huron, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Handles, Of which I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The objects ofthe invention are to provide a simple and durable device for detachably securing the handle to an umbrella, and for locking the parts in such a manner as to give the greatest possible extent to the engaging surfaces, so that the constant wear and thrust of the umbrella stick against the ground when used as a walking stick will not separate or destroy them. I @accomplish these objects by means of the peculiar forms of construction and combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and specifically pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a side elevation of the stick, showing thelshort portion attached to the handle, separated from the main Or long portion of the stick, and the opposing shoulders on the uniting surfaces 3 Fig. 2 is a view of the same looking down upon the spring catch; Fig. 3 is a similar view of the stick showing the parts united together.

In these views, l is the stick comprising a steel tube of great lightness and strength. From this tube a portion 2 is cut off equal to the part which is to be inserted in the handle, with a short projecting portion.

The edges of the tube which are designed to come together are transversely cut at 3 for one halt1 the diameter of the tube then longitudinally cut or at a slight angle at 4 for a short distance and then again transversely cut at 5 to give a broad bearing tor` each piece, and to form two shoulders of the greatest possible strength to prevent one part from turning on the other. The inclined edges assist in iitting the parts together.

Inside the tube is inserted the solid core 6 which is attached in any desirable manner to the inside of the handle portion of the tube, as by a pin 7. The end of this core extends far enough into the main portion of the tube to make a firm connection, and the projecting end is longitudinally slotted at S to make one portion thereof elastic as 9. Upon the end of this elastic portion is secured a radial projection or keeper l0 which when the core is introduced into the tube l snaps into the Opening 11 made to receive it. The connection is then positive, rigid and as strong as the tube itself, and by pressing upon the spring, the parts can readily be separated.

Having described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a separable handle, a main tubular stick, a shorter tubular portion secured to the handle, a core secured to the shorter portion and projecting into the longer portion, a shoulder in the meeting ends of each of the tubular portions, each shoulder comprising one half of the said end, inclined edges for said shoulders, a spring keeper formed integrally in the projecting end of said core, and a corresponding recess in the stick.

2. In a separable umbrella handle, the combination with a tubular stick and short tubular stem of the same size to which the handle is secured, of diametrical shoulder on the adjacent ends of stick and stem, a core in the stem secured thereto and projecting into the stick, the said projecting portion of the core being longitudinally slotted tO form a spring, a projecting keeper on the said Spring and a corresponding slot in the stick tubing, substantially as described.
