Description

PATENTBD MAR. 2'7, 1860.
H. D. W'ALGOTT. EYELET MACHINE.
f/cas es Inf/6% Yomnc 'UNITED STATES PA H. D. WALCOTT, OE BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO H. WILLIAMS, OF SAME PLAGE.
EYELET-IVIACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 27',674, dated March 27, 1860.
To all 'whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, HALSEY D. TALOOTT, of Boston, in the county of Suiolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Eyelet hlaehine or Instrument t'or Setting Eyelets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specitication, in which- Figure l is a view ot my improved instrument. Figs. 2 and 3 details to be referred to hereafter.
In attaching eyelets to articles ot wearing apparel, or where they are used to secure articles (such as sheets of paper) together, a punch is employed to make a hole for the reception ot' the eyelet, and a closing die is used to set the eyelet after it is inserted.
My present invention consists in a convenient portable instrument t'or this purpose embracing in one tool both punch and set ting die.
That others skilled in the art may understand and `use my invention I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried out the same.
In the said drawings the two levers A., B, pivoted together at a term a pairloi1 pincers,
vthe jaws Y), e, of which are widened out at their ends. The jaw 7), has attached to and rising t'rom its inner face, at one corner the cylindrical plunger c, and at the other corner the setting punch or die f. To the inner tace ot the jaw c, is pivoted at a piece g (detached in Figs. Q and 3) which is tree to oscillate toward either side of this jaw, cX- cept when contincd by a thumb screw fz, which passes through a curved slot z' in the jaw, and screws into the piece g. This pieceis much narrower than the jaw c, and carries at its outer end a cylindrical die r, having a. hole fr; made through it and through the piece g of a suitable size to receive the plunger' c; and also another die Z the recess ot which is ot a contour corresponding with the setting punch f.
A notch m is cut out of the jaw c near one side to allow the material punched out by the plunger e to fall out from the hole 7e. A spring n, secured at 6, to the face of the jaw Z), has a ring at its outer end which embraces the plunger e, and serves to clear it ot the material through which the plunger has passed.
The following is the operation of this instrument: The piece g, being in the position shown in Fig. l, with the die r, immediately over the plunger e, and the screw 7i, turned down to secure it in place-the necessary holes may be punched or cut out from the material in which the eyelets are to be inserted. It will be perceived that while this is being done the space above the die f is tree, so that other portions of the goods will not be marred by it when the jaws and e are shut toward each other. Then the requisite holes have been made, the screw t, is loosened and the piece g is swung over to the other side ot the aw c, this brings the die Z, over the die f, when the pincers may be used to close down or set the eyelets which have been inserted in the holes prepared for them; the space over the plunger e, now being clear, so that it will not injure the goods.
The plunger c, and die r, here represent-ed are such as are generally used for paper and light articles, but for leather a diderentl punch would be used, but as I make no claim to the form of punch this change will not attect the spirit ot' my invention.
Other devices may be employed for securing the piece g in placewfor example, a spring may be attached to the top of the aw c, having a pin projecting from its outer end, which will tall into a suitable notch in the piece g, and hold it, then by raising this spring the piece g will be free to move from one side to the other of the aw c.
Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent isl. The nippers A, B, having their jaws I), C, furnished with both a punch or cutter, and a closing or setting die, substantially as described.
2. I claim the adjustable piece g operating substantially as specified.
HALSEY D. VALCOTT.
