Description

UNITED STATES PATENToEEIcE. i
SYLvENUS WALKER, oE BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, Assienon To n, `w.QSMrrn,on; g gli SoMERvILLE, MASSACHUSETTS. D
Boor-STRAP FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 26,552, dated DecernlmoerZO,` 1859i To all rwhom 'it may concern:`
Be it known that I, SYLvENUs WALKER, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Boot-Strap Fastener, of `which the following is a full,v clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a view of a part ofa boot leg` with my limproved strap fastener attached-Fig. 2, a view of the fastener detached-Fig. 3, detail to be referred to hereafter.
The object of my present invention is to facilitate the manufacture of boots by furnishing a convenient means of attaching to the boot `leg the straps `bywhich the boot is drawn on by the wearer. I am aware that for this purpose, a strip of metal has been used, from which small triangular pieces were struck up as in Fig. 3, of the drawings forming rivets which were passed through the strap and boot leg and were then clenched down to secure the strap and leg together. But this did not answer the purpose as it required too much time andlabor to turn over and clench down each of the rivets separately; so that there was but little saving over the old method of sewing them on.
My invention consists in a thin metal plate of a convenient form, for example that of a shield) on which the name of the manufacturer or seller of the boot, or any other device or trade mark may be stamped, and to which is attached a series of hollow rivets or eyelets, which are to be passed through corresponding holes made through the strap and boot leg, and are then to be riveted by means of a suitable tool; so that they can all be closed down onto the boot leg at a single operation. d
That others skilled in the art may understand and use my invention I willproceed to describe the manner in which I have carried out the same.
In the said drawings A, represents the top i p `ing dies corresponding inj position and l num? ortion of a boot leg, one side of it being roken away to show the manner of attaching the strap B, ,to theinside of the lega` d C, -isa plate or` shieldof thinlmetal showin;` 1 detached in Fig. 2, which' is aview `oflltheunder side of; it. Smallfdepressionsga ligg` l,` are stamped in fromd-thetopsidelfvvhen` the shield is stamped lout froma sheetof metal; this produces" correspondinglelev tions on the opposite side ver eachfof whic` d is soldered a hollow "rivet Q6" (similaft the eyelets `which are" in; ,common use):` `;`the portion of l metal which Prises within `thel rivet giving additional#strength` firm` ness to it. `Any devicejmayble ,stamped on the upper portion of thewshieldas at c.` 1:, i
The following the manner; inwhichQI apply the above ,described `,strap fastener: i i Holes correspondin infpsitionwiththe rivets b, are punche fdthroughfthestrapand boot leg at one operation by afsuitableftool which 1s composed of thef requisite number of punches together;` the `iriifrets b, are then inserted in theholes and; arelalldclosedjdown or riveted onto theoutside fthebootfleg at one operationyby` another `tool which "fis formed of a series of blunt punches or@ clos-1 ber with the rivets. amalso awarefthat two articles have been securedytogetherfby p eyelets used separatelyand individually, but I with my improved fastener;thmwholelseries of rivets may belinserted "andwclose at once in almost the saine ti` thatf separate eyelet couldlbe.
I have heretofore spokenfonlywo y proved fastener as `applietil l, `to kfastening:` y straps to bootlegs, but `it is; levidentjthat it may be used for `other purposesffor example; to fasten straps togarments wsuchias vests, pants, &c. ,i V l What I clairnaszlrnyj invention andydel#` :d sire to secure by Lettersflatentas a new ar? ticle of manufacturevis+L]` f1] 13d j The above describedigbootl strapfastener, consisting of "the plate orf shieldyGlz and 1 hollow rivets oreyeletsyb, substantwll as"19 described.
