* BY ,nm 3 x I, M W Ammqs The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in tools for removing and replacing rivets in expansion type bands for wrist watches or bracelets to adjust the size of the band by adding or removing links, or to replace damaged or defective links.
Expansion bands of this type employ hollow rivets in which springs are enclosed by caps on the rivets, and in order to repair or adjust the band, it is necessary to remove both top and bottom caps and the springs and the problem then is to remove the rivet without splitting the same and after repair or adjustment to the band to replace the rivet and spring in a neat and workmanlike manner and in as short a time as possible.
Accordingly, an important object of the invention is to provide a tool in one organized construction for removing as well as replacing the rivet.
Anotherobject is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is eflicient and reliable in operation, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purpose for which the same is intended.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure 2 is an end elevational view;
Figures 3 and/l are enlarged sectional views taken respectively on the lines 33 and 4-4 of Figure 1;
Figures 5 and 6 are enlarged sectional views of the rivet un-flaring jaws and rivet flaring head taken respectively on the lines 5-5 and 6-6 of Figure 2;
Figure 7 is a side elevational view of the jaws in rivet un-flaring position;
Figure 8 is a side elevational view of the head in rivet flaring position; and
Figure 9 is an enlarged fragmentary end elevational view of one of the jaw plates.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a pliers-like tool generally constructed with a pair of handles 6 and 7 pivoted to each other in crossed relation and having pivoted jaw end portions 8 and 9 maintained parallel to each other during their opening and closing movement.
The jaw end portions 8 and 9 are constructed of transversely elongated flat opposing plates 10 and 11 and plate 10 is formed adjacent one end thereof with an opening 12 in which a shank 13 of a key or other suitable finger grip 14 is rotatably mounted and retained from endwise movement in the opening by inner and outer flanges 15 and 16 onthe shank. The key is positioned outwardly at the back of plate 10 and the nited States Patent 0 front end of the shank is formed with a recess 17 in which the inner end portions 18 and 19 of a pair of semi-conical rivet un-peening jaws 20 and 21 are slidable. A pin 22 extends transversely of the inner end portions 18 and 19 of the jaws with suflicient play for the pivotal opening and closing movement of the jaws and 'the ends of the pin are slidable in a slot 23 in shank 13 to prevent independent rotary movement of the jaws 20 and 21 and to permit inward and outward sliding movement thereof to open and close the same. A coil spring 24 is positioned in recess 17 behind jaws 20 and 21 to project the latter outwardly and a coil spring 25 is recessed in the opposing faces of jaws 20 and 21 to open the latter. The opposing faces of jaws 20 and 21 at the tips thereof are formed with opposing semi-circular recesses 26 and 27.
The end portion of plate 11 in the path of jaws 20 and 21 forms an anvil 28 against which one end of a hollow flared rivet 29 of a watch band or bracelet 30 is placed while the jaws 20 and 21are moved into engagement with the other flared end of the rivet by a closing movement of handles 6 and 7. The flared or upset flange 31 of the rivet is engaged in the recesses 26 and 27 of jaws 20 and 21, as shown in Figure 7, and as pressure is gradually applied to the handles, the jaws 20 and 21 will be forced inwardly to close the latter and at the same time, key 14 is turned back and forth to turn or oscillate the jaws to un-peen the rivet for the removal thereof from band 30.
The end portion of plate 11 opposite from anvil 28 is also formed with an opening 32 in which the shank 33 of a second key 34 is rotatably mounted and retained from endwise movement by flanges 35 and 36. The front end of shank 33 is formed with a recess 37 in which the shank 38 of a rivet peening head 39 is secured by a set-screw 40. Head 39 is tapered and formed with a pilot tip 41 at its tapered end surrounded by an annular groove 42. Rivet peening heads 39 of various sizes may be interchangeably attached to the shank 33.
The rivet 43 is replaced in the band 44 and one end of'the rivet placed against the anvil portion 45 of plate 10 and the pilot tip 41 of peening head 39 inserted in the other end of the rivet and pressure gradually applied to handles 6 and 7 to close jaw plates 10 and 11 and at the same time, key 34 is turned back and forth to 'peen the rivet.
Each anvil portion 28 and 45 of the plates 10 and 11 is provided with a knurled face plate 46 against which the rivet is held to prevent turning of the rivet when the keys 14 or 34 are being manipulated.
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A rivet removing tool of the pliers type comprising a pair of confronting jaw plates, one of said plates including an anvil portion, and a rivet un-peening member carried by the other plate and opposing the anvil, said un-peening member including a rotatable shank for turning said member during the un-peening operation, said shank having a recess in one end portion and said un-peening member comprising a pair of outwardly flared retractible rivet gripping jaws slidably carried in the recess of its related shank to close said jaws by opposing pressure of the anvil to retract the jaws.

A rivet removing tool of the pliers type comprising a pair of confronting jaw plates, one of said plates including an anvil portion, a rivet un-peening member carried by the other plate, and opposing the anvil, said un-peening member comprising a shank having a hollow front end, a pair of normally open coacting jaws slidably carried in the hollow end of the shank in opposed relation to.the anvil, said jaws projecting outwardly beyond the shank, and cooperating means in the jaws and shank to slide the jaws into the shank and close the jaws upon pressure thereon due to squeezing the work between the jaws and anvil.
3. A rivet removing tool of the pliers type comprising a pair of confronting jaw plates, one of said plates including an anvil portion, a rivet un-peening member 15 carried by the other plate, and opposing the anvil, said unpeening member including a rotatable shank for turning said member during the un-peening operation, said shank for the un-peening member having a recess at its front end and said un-peening member comprising a pair of semi-conical coacting jaws slidably mounted in the recess for inward and outward movement and with the conical surface of the jaws engaged internally of the recess to close the jaws about a peened rivet upon retracting movement of the jaws by opposing pressure subjected thereto by the anvil.
4. A rivet working tool of the pliers type comprising i a pair of confronting jaw plates spaced from each other, an anvil carried by one plate, a shank extending through the other plate, an expansible and contractible rivet gripping member rotatably and slidably carried by said shank in a position opposed to the anvil, cooperating means on the inner end of said shank to contract said rivet gripping member upon pressure thereon due to squeezing work between the rivet gripping member and said anvil, and manipulating means on the other end of said shank for actuating the rivet gripping member to turn said member while in rivet gripping engagement.
